Article Synopsis
  • Vitamin D insufficiency is prevalent among hemodialysis patients, but there's a lack of clear guidelines for its monitoring and treatment.
  • A study of 697 patients found that increasing levels of 25(OH)D3 were linked to reduced levels of parathyroid hormone (PTH) and phosphate, especially when levels were between 25 and 75 nmol/L.
  • The study concluded that treating vitamin D in these patients appears safe and correlated with lower PTH, but more research is needed to see if these biochemical improvements lead to better clinical outcomes.

deepAFT: A nonlinear accelerated failure time model with artificial neural network.

Stat Med

August 2024

Department of Public Health Sciences and Canadian Cancer Trials Group, Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada.

The Cox regression model or accelerated failure time regression models are often used for describing the relationship between survival outcomes and potential explanatory variables. These models assume the studied covariates are connected to the survival time or its distribution or their transformations through a function of a linear regression form. In this article, we propose nonparametric, nonlinear algorithms (deepAFT methods) based on deep artificial neural networks to model survival outcome data in the broad distribution family of accelerated failure time models.

Objectives: The HEART score is a clinical decision tool that stratifies patients into categories of low, moderate, and high-risk of major adverse cardiac events in the emergency department (ED) but cannot identify underlying cardiovascular disease in patients without prior history. The presence of atherosclerosis can easily be detected at the bedside using carotid ultrasound. Plaque quantification is well established, and plaque composition can be assessed using ultrasound grayscale pixel distribution analysis.

Androgen receptors are expressed in the kidney and serum testosterone is negatively associated with serum phosphate in males, suggesting a role of testosterone in renal phosphate handling. In this cross-sectional study, we examined the association of serum total and free testosterone with acute phosphate and calcium excretion in males in response to an oral phosphate challenge. Thirty-five healthy adult males with normal baseline testosterone levels consumed a 500 mg phosphorus drink and the urinary excretion of minerals, as well as levels of relevant circulating parameters, were assessed at baseline and hourly for 4 h.

Retraction speed and chronic poststernotomy pain: A randomized controlled trial.

J Thorac Cardiovasc Surg

December 2024

Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine, Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada. Electronic address:

Objectives: Approximately 30% of patients develop chronic poststernotomy pain (CPSP) following cardiac surgery with sternal retraction. Risk factors have been described but no causal determinants identified. Investigators hypothesized that opening the sternum slowly would impart less force (and thereby less nerve/tissue damage) and translate to a reduced incidence of CPSP.

Background: Breast reconstruction is an integral part of breast cancer care. There are 2 main types of breast reconstruction: alloplastic (using implants) and autologous (using the patient's own tissue). The latter creates a more natural breast mound and avoids the long-term need for surgical revision-more often associated with implant-based surgery.

Background: Asthma is a chronic airway inflammatory disease that affects millions of Canadians and often contributes to higher levels of anxiety among patients. Since the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic was a time of increased anxiety and fear among the Canadian population, it was thought that those with asthma may experience heightened anxiety levels due to uncertain access to care, the potential to misinterpret asthma symptoms for symptoms of COVID-19 (or vice versa), and the concern about being treated differently by those around them when experiencing asthma symptoms. Therefore, this study sought to perform a cross-sectional analysis of the asthma-anxiety relationship in adults with and without asthma in the unique context of the COVID-19 pandemic from a Canadian perspective.
