Development and psychometric evaluation of the Brief Parenting Questionnaire.

BMC Psychol

January 2025

Department of Research and Development, War Child Alliance, Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Background: There is a paucity of brief self-report parenting measures validated for use in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). We developed the Brief Parenting Questionnaire (BPQ), a 24-item self-report measure for use with parents of children ages 3-12.

Objective: We describe the development and evaluation of the psychometric properties of the BPQ, which was designed to include two subscales: warm and responsive parenting (WRP) and harsh parenting (HP).

Background: Recurrent early pregnancy loss [rEPL] is a traumatic experience, marked by feelings such as grief and depression, and often anxiety. Despite this, the psychological consequences of rEPL are often overlooked, particularly when considering future reproductive health or approaching subsequent pregnancies. The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic led to significant reconfiguration of maternity care and a negative impact on the perinatal experience, but the specific impact on women's experience of rEPL has yet to be explored.

Reduced cerebral blood flow occurs early in the development of Alzheimer's disease (AD), but the factors producing this reduction are unknown. Here, we ask whether genetic and lifestyle risk factors for AD-the ε4 allele of the Apolipoprotein (APOE) gene, and physical activity-can together produce this reduction in cerebral blood flow which leads eventually to AD. Using in vivo two-photon microscopy and haemodynamic measures, we record neurovascular function from the visual cortex of physically active or sedentary mice expressing APOE3 and APOE4 in place of murine APOE.

Is there a mental health diagnostic crisis in primary care? Current research practices in global mental health cannot answer that question.

Epidemiol Psychiatr Sci

January 2025

Health Service and Population Research Department, Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience, Center for Global Mental Health, King's College London, London, UK.

In low- and middle-income countries, fewer than 1 in 10 people with mental health conditions are estimated to be accurately diagnosed in primary care. This is despite more than 90 countries providing mental health training for primary healthcare workers in the past two decades. The lack of accurate diagnoses is a major bottleneck to reducing the global mental health treatment gap.

Preexisting multimorbidity predicts greater mortality risks related to long-term PM exposure.

Environ Pollut

January 2025

Institute of Social Development and Health Management, Hubei Province Key Laboratory of Occupational Hazard Identification and Control, School of Public Health, Wuhan University of Science and Technology, Wuhan 430065, China. Electronic address:

Long-term health risk assessments related to ambient fine particulate matter (PM) exposure have been more limited to general population but not towards individuals suffering from multimorbidity. While both multimorbidity and PM are independently linked to elevated mortality risk, their combined effects and interactions remain practically unexplored. A cross-cohort analysis was undertaken on data from 3 prospective cohorts, initially enrolling 869038 adults aged ≥18 years followed up during 2005-2022.

Latest clinical frontiers related to autism diagnostic strategies.

Cell Rep Med

January 2025

DiMePRe-J-Department of Precision and Rigenerative Medicine-Jonic Area, University of Bari "Aldo Moro", Bari, Italy.

The diagnosis of autism is currently based on the developmental history, direct observation of behavior, and reported symptoms, supplemented by rating scales/interviews/structured observational evaluations-which is influenced by the clinician's knowledge and experience-with no established diagnostic biomarkers. A growing body of research has been conducted over the past decades to improve diagnostic accuracy. Here, we provide an overview of the current diagnostic assessment process as well as of recent and ongoing developments to support diagnosis in terms of genetic evaluation, telemedicine, digital technologies, use of machine learning/artificial intelligence, and research on candidate diagnostic biomarkers.

The role of oscillations in grid cells' toroidal topology.

PLoS Comput Biol

January 2025

Kavli Institute for Systems Neuroscience and Centre for Algorithms in the Cortex, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Trondheim, Norway.

Persistent homology applied to the activity of grid cells in the Medial Entorhinal Cortex suggests that this activity lies on a toroidal manifold. By analyzing real data and a simple model, we show that neural oscillations play a key role in the appearance of this toroidal topology. To quantitatively monitor how changes in spike trains influence the topology of the data, we first define a robust measure for the degree of toroidality of a dataset.
