Introduction Heart failure (HF) poses a major global health challenge, with acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF) representing a critical phase that requires immediate medical intervention. Coronary artery disease (CAD) plays a significant role in many HF cases, contributing to disease progression through myocardial ischemia and impaired ventricular function. While the connection between CAD and HF is well-established, its specific effect on short-term outcomes in patients with ADHF is less understood, especially in regions like the Middle East.

Ethnic differences in vitamin D status, bone and body composition in South Asian indian and caucasian men.

Metabol Open

September 2024

Department of Health Sciences, College of Nursing and Health Professions, Drexel University, Philadelphia, PA, USA.

Background: High prevalence of metabolic abnormalities and poor bone health in ethnic minorties may stem from differences in body composition and alterations in endocrine milieu. South Asian Indians (SAIs) are at greater risk for metabolic syndrome (MetS) and poor bone health than Caucasians. Often these differences are reported later in life and/or in a resident immigrant population compared to a Caucasian population.

Article Synopsis
  • Hughes-Stovin syndrome (HSS) is a rare condition characterized by systemic vasculitis leading to both venous and arterial thrombosis, making it hard to differentiate from pulmonary embolism (PE) early on.
  • This study compared 40 HSS patients to 50 PE patients, analyzing demographics, clinical findings, and results from computed tomography pulmonary angiography (CTPA).
  • Results revealed that HSS patients were significantly younger and did not have co-morbidities like many PE patients; HSS showed unique vascular changes, including more frequent parenchymal hemorrhage and distinct pulmonary artery aneurysms.*

Venous ulcers are open wounds commonly associated with chronic venous insufficiency. Each patient's healing process is unique, and factors like nutrition and compression therapy can affect it. Compression therapy and optimal nutritional status can assist in improving venous blood circulation, decreasing swelling, and promoting wound healing.

Background: Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a chronic progressive age-related lung disease causing relentless fibrosis of the lung parenchyma. Currently, pirfenidone and nintedanib are the two antifibrotic drugs, approved for the treatment of IPF. Both are shown to slow progression by preserving lung functions from rapid decline compared to a placebo.

Background: Following rhinoplasty, external nasal splints are used to reshape the cartilage and reposition the nasal bone. Despite the popularity of using an external nasal splint in rhinoplasty procedures, there is still a lack of evidence of the effectiveness of using the external nasal splint post-rhinoplasty. This systematic literature review aimed to evaluate the evidence regarding the use of external nasal splints following rhinoplasty.

Despite recent advances in the research on oncolytic viruses (OVs), a better understanding of how to enhance their replication is key to improving their therapeutic index. Understanding viral replication is important to improve treatment outcomes based on enhanced viral spreading within the tumor milieu. The VSV-Δ51 oncolytic virus has been widely used as an anticancer agent with a high selectivity profile.

The nasal septum is an osteocartilaginous wall that divides the nose into two nasal cavities. Asymptomatic minor deviation of the septum is considered a normal developmental variation found in the majority of the population. The reported global prevalence rates had great variation due to the extent of deviation considered in the reporting studies.

November 2022

Department of Medical Laboratory Technology, University of Tabuk, Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most common and aggressive malignant brain tumor of the central nervous system and has a very poor prognosis. The current standard of care for patients with GBM involves surgical resection, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy. Unfortunately, conventional therapies have not resulted in significant improvements in the survival outcomes of patients with GBM; therefore, the overall mortality rate remains high.

Bronchiectasis refers to both a clinical disease and a radiological appearance that has multiple causes and can be associated with a range of conditions. Disease heterogeneity and the absence of standardised definitions have hampered clinical trials of treatments for bronchiectasis and are important challenges in clinical practice. In view of the need for new therapies for non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis to reduce the disease burden, we established an international taskforce of experts to develop recommendations and definitions for clinically significant bronchiectasis in adults to facilitate the standardisation of terminology for clinical trials.

This study evaluated the protective effect of resolvin D1 (RVD1) against cadmium chloride (CdCl )-induced hippocampal damage and memory loss in rats and investigated if such protection is mediated by modulating the PTEN/PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway. Adult male Wistar rats (n = 18/group) were divided as control, control + RVD1, CdCl , CdCl  + RVD1 and CdCl  + RVD1 + bpV(pic), a PTEN inhibitor. All treatments were conducted for 4 weeks.

Performance of Commercially Available Rapid Serological Assays for the Detection of SARS-CoV-2 Antibodies.

Pathogens

December 2020

Pathogen Genomics Laboratory, Division of Biological and Environmental Sciences and Engineering (BESE), Thuwal 23955, Saudi Arabia.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), continues to spread globally. Although several rapid commercial serological assays have been developed, little is known about their performance and accuracy in detecting SARS-CoV-2-specific antibodies in COVID-19 patient samples. Here, we have evaluated the performance of seven commercially available rapid lateral flow immunoassays (LFIA) obtained from different manufacturers, and compared them to in-house developed and validated ELISA assays for the detection of SARS-CoV-2-specific IgM and IgG antibodies in RT-PCR-confirmed COVID-19 patients.
