Optimizing Scan Range in Computed Tomography of Kidneys, Ureters, and Bladder: A Retrospective Study on Reducing Overscanning.

Medicina (Kaunas)

November 2024

Radiological Sciences Department, College of Applied Medical Sciences, King Saud University, P.O. Box 145111, Riyadh 4545, Saudi Arabia.

: Computed tomography of the kidneys, ureters, and bladder (CT KUB) is essential for evaluating urinary stones but also exposes patients to significant radiation. The scanning field should be minimized to only the necessary area to limit this radiation exposure. This study aims to assess the extent of CT KUB overscanning in renal colic procedures and identify the appropriate vertebral level for starting CT KUB scans.

Molecular Mutations and Clinical Behavior in Bethesda III and IV Thyroid Nodules: A Comparative Study.

Cancers (Basel)

December 2024

Department of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, Sir Mortimer B. Davis-Jewish General Hospital, McGill University, Montreal, QC H3T 1E2, Canada.

Thyroid cancer is the most common endocrine malignancy, and accurate diagnosis is crucial for effective management. Fine needle aspiration cytology, guided by the Bethesda System for Reporting Thyroid Cytopathology, categorizes thyroid nodules into six categories, with Bethesda III and IV representing indeterminate diagnoses that pose significant challenges for clinical decision-making. Understanding the molecular profiles of these categories may enhance diagnostic accuracy and guide treatment strategies.

Introduction: Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) is a metabolic disorder marked by Q10 hyperglycemia that can negatively affect both mothers and newborns. The increasing prevalence of GDM and the limitations associated with the standard diagnostic test highlight the urgent need for early screening strategies that promote timely interventions.

Methods: This study aims to investigate the metabolic profile associated with GDM through an untargeted metabolomic analysis using mass spectrometry (MS)- based omics.

Background: Pathogenic variants in are associated with pyridoxine-dependent epilepsy (PDE), a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by epileptic seizures, unresponsiveness to standard antiseizure medications (ASM), and a response only to pyridoxine. Here, we report two patients (from a consanguineous family) with neonatal seizures and developmental delay.

Case Presentation: Patient 1 (a 13-year-old girl) was born normally at term.

Receptor Interacting Serine/Threonine Kinase 1 (RIPK1) is widely expressed and integral to inflammatory and cell death responses. Autosomal recessive RIPK1-deficiency, due to biallelic loss of function mutations in RIPK1, is a rare inborn error of immunity (IEI) resulting in uncontrolled necroptosis, apoptosis and inflammation. Although hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) has been suggested as a potential curative therapy, the extent to which disease may be driven by extra-hematopoietic effects of RIPK1-deficiency, which are non-amenable to HSCT, is not clear.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) represents a major public health challenge globally, particularly in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, where it is identified as the second most prevalent form of cancer. Despite advancements in management strategies, tailored guidelines specific to the Gulf region are lacking. This paper presents consensus recommendations developed by a panel of experts from the GCC countries to address this gap.

Introduction: The emergence of high-efficacy disease-modifying therapies (HE DMT) for multiple sclerosis (MS) may pose challenges to the administration and monitoring burden of the therapies. This article presents the results of the Delphi consensus method to generate insights from experts on the administration and monitoring burden of HE DMT in Saudi Arabia with a special focus on cladribine.

Methods: Between January and March 2023, a two-round modified Delphi method was used to establish consensus regarding the administration and monitoring burden of HE DMTs used for MS.

Electronic address:

Four genes-DAND5, PKD1L1, MMP21, and CIROP-form a genetic module that has specifically evolved in vertebrate species that harbor motile cilia in their left-right organizer (LRO). We find here that CIROZ (previously known as C1orf127) is also specifically expressed in the LRO of mice, frogs, and fish, where it encodes a protein with a signal peptide followed by 3 zona pellucida N domains, consistent with extracellular localization. We report 16 individuals from 10 families with bi-allelic CIROZ inactivation variants, which cause heterotaxy with congenital heart defects.

Article Synopsis
  • Allergic fungal rhinosinusitis (AFRS) is a type of chronic rhinosinusitis linked to a hypersensitivity to fungi, particularly affecting immunocompromised individuals.
  • A 32-year-old patient with a history of Wilson's disease and a liver transplant faced severe nasal obstruction and other symptoms, leading to a diagnosis of AFRS after surgery and biopsy, but risks from carotid artery dehiscence complicated further surgical interventions.
  • The patient achieved complete symptom resolution after starting dupilumab, a biologic therapy, highlighting its potential as a safe and effective treatment option for high-risk patients with AFRS.

Hypoalbuminemia as a predictor of severe dengue: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Expert Rev Anti Infect Ther

January 2025

Center for Global Health Research, Saveetha Medical College and Hospital, Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences, Saveetha University, Chennai, India.

Article Synopsis
  • Dengue fever is a major health issue globally, particularly in tropical regions, where identifying hypoalbuminemia helps in diagnosing severe cases early.
  • A systematic review of 17 studies found a significant difference in albumin levels between severe and non-severe dengue patients, with higher hypoalbuminemia noted in children.
  • The research confirms that low albumin levels are a key predictor of severe dengue, which can help healthcare providers improve patient care through tailored treatment plans.

Effect of extracellular vesicles derived from oviductal and uterine fluid on the development of porcine preimplantation embryos.

Theriogenology

December 2024

College of Veterinary Medicine and Research Institute for Veterinary Science, Seoul National University, Seoul, 08826, Republic of Korea. Electronic address:

To improve the efficiency of in-vitro-produced (IVP) porcine embryos, we focused on the events that usually occur during in-vivo embryonic transit from the oviduct to the uterus. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are released by different mammalian cells and are imperative for intercellular communication and reflect the cell's physiological state. Based on these characteristics, EVs were isolated from oviductal and uterine fluid to imitate the in vivo environment and improve the efficiency of IVP embryos.
