May 2024

Eurocord, Institut de Recherche de Saint-Louis (IRSL) EA3518, Hôpital Saint-Louis, Université Paris Cité, Paris, France; Monacord, Centre Scientifique de Monaco, Monaco. Electronic address:

Hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) remains the sole available curative treatment for Fanconi anemia (FA), with particularly favorable outcomes reported after matched sibling donor (MSD) HCT. This study aimed to describe outcomes, with a special focus on late complications, of FA patients who underwent umbilical cord blood transplantation (UCBT). In this retrospective analysis of allogeneic UCBT for FA performed between 1988 and 2021 in European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EBMT)-affiliated centers, a total of 205 FA patients underwent UCBT (55 related and 150 unrelated) across 77 transplant centers.

As hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) and cellular therapy expand to new indications and international access improves, the volume of HCT performed annually continues to rise. Parallel improvements in HCT techniques and supportive care entails more patients surviving long-term, creating further emphasis on survivorship needs. Survivors are at risk for developing late complications secondary to pre-, peri- and post-transplant exposures and other underlying risk-factors.

Challenges and insights: Methamphetamine analysis in post-mortem putrefied human tissues in a hot climate.

Saudi Pharm J

March 2024

Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences, Faculty of Applied Medical Sciences, King Abdulaziz University, Jeddah 21589, Saudi Arabia.

Background: The production and distribution of methamphetamine (meth) is often associated with illegal and clandestine laboratories, posing significant challenges for law enforcement and public health efforts. Global concern is growing over meth-related fatalities, as its high potential for abuse and detrimental impact on health make it an important issue in the realm of substance abuse and addiction. This concern has notably increased in Saudi Arabia, where the hot climate adds complexity to the analysis due to challenges posed by putrefaction.

Background: While family history (FHx) of prostate cancer (PCa) increases the risk of PCa, comparably less is known regarding the impact of FHx on pathologic and oncologic outcomes after radical prostatectomy (RP).

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed our multicenter database comprising 6,041 nonmetastatic PCa patients treated with RP. Patients with a FHx of PCa in one or more first-degree relatives were considered as FHx positive.

Implementation of a liver health check in people with type 2 diabetes.

Lancet Gastroenterol Hepatol

January 2024

Sheila Sherlock Liver Unit, Royal Free Hospital, London, UK; UCL Institute of Liver and Digestive Health, University College London, UK. Electronic address:

As morbidity and mortality related to potentially preventable liver diseases are on the rise globally, early detection of liver fibrosis offers a window of opportunity to prevent disease progression. Early detection of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease allows for initiation and reinforcement of guidance on bodyweight management, risk stratification for advanced liver fibrosis, and treatment optimisation of diabetes and other metabolic complications. Identification of alcohol-related liver disease provides the opportunity to support patients with detoxification and abstinence programmes.

Background: Child neglect is a public health, human rights, and social problem, with potentially devastating and costly consequences. The aim of this study was to: (1) summarize the oral health profile of children across the globe; (2) provide a brief overview of legal instruments that can offer children protection from dental neglect; and (3) discuss the effectiveness of these legal instruments.

Methods: We summarized and highlighted the caries profile and status of implementation of legislation on child dental neglect for 26 countries representing the World Health Organization regions: five countries in Africa (Nigeria, South Africa, Sudan, Tanzania, Zimbabwe), eight in the Americas (Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Mexico, Peru, Unites States of America, Uruguay), six in the Eastern Mediterranean (Egypt, Iran, Libya, Jordan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia), four in Europe (Italy, Latvia, Serbia, United Kingdom), two in South-East Asia (India and Indonesia) and one country (China) with its special administrative region (Hong Kong) in the Western Pacific.

Leber hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) is a rare maternally inherited mitochondrial disorder that typically affects young male adults in their second and third decades of life. It usually manifests as painless, subacute, progressive, bilateral vision loss, with more than 90% of affected individuals losing their vision before age 50. Compared with other diseases that cause optic neuritis (multiple sclerosis or neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders), LHON has worsening visual function in the first 6-12 months of disease progression, is predominantly male, the optic nerve is affected bilaterally from onset, there is no gadolinium enhancement on MRI, no response to disease-modifying therapy, and there is a family history of mutation in mitochondrial DNA.

Unlabelled: In this study, the presence of 11-nor-Δ-carboxy tetrahydrocannabinol (THC-COOH) in postmortem fluid obtained from the chest cavity (FCC) of postmortem cases collected from drug-related fatalities or criminal-related deaths in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, was investigated to evaluate its suitability for use as a complementary specimen to blood and biological specimens in cases where no bodily fluids are available or suitable for analysis. The relationships between THC-COOH concentrations in the FCC samples and age, body mass index (BMI), polydrug intoxication, manner, and cause of death were investigated.

Methods: Fifteen postmortem cases of FCC were analyzed using fully validated liquid chromatography-positive-electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS).

Article Synopsis
  • * A Consensus Scientific committee, comprised of 106 members from 21 countries, conducted an in-depth literature review and reached recommendations regarding ideal graft-to-recipient weight ratios, monitoring portal pressure and flow, and diagnosing SFSS around postoperative day 7.
  • * The committee proposed a new 3-grade severity stratification system to help clinicians identify patients at risk for SFSS early on, suggesting that further studies are necessary to validate this system.

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) is exceedingly rare in the breast, with <45 cases reported in the literature. Although estrogen receptor/progesterone receptor/human epidermal growth factor 2 triple-negative, MEC is characterized as a special subtype of breast carcinoma with significantly better prognosis than conventional basal-type tumors. Cutaneous hidradenoma (HA) is considered a benign adnexal neoplasm showing histomorphologic overlap with MEC.

Introduction: Angiosarcoma is a rare and highly aggressive soft tissue malignancy originating from vascular and lymphatic endothelial cells. Epithelioid angiosarcoma is the rarest subtype of angiosarcoma, characterized by the proliferation of large polygonal cells with an epithelioid feature. The occurrence of these tumors in the oral cavity is highly uncommon, and immunohistochemistry staining is essential to differentiate epithelioid angiosarcoma from mimicking lesions.

Ambulatory care pharmacy should run with an integrated strategy for continuity of care, quality, and customer satisfaction, which is very important since it is usually the last hospital station for the patient before he or she goes home. Automatic refill programs are targeting the promotion of medication adherence; however, there is a potential concern regarding the possible wastage of medications contributed by these programs due to the reduced patient involvement in the refill medication dispensing cycle. We evaluated the impact of an automatic refill program on antiretroviral medication use.
