Article Synopsis
  • - Several studies have looked into how different mouth rinses might reduce the SARS-CoV-2 viral load, but results are inconsistent; this particular study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of various over-the-counter mouth rinses and lozenges compared to saline in COVID-19 patients.
  • - The clinical trial included four groups: chlorhexidine mouth rinse, chlorhexidine lozenges, povidone iodine mouth rinse, and saline (control), with saliva samples collected before and after using the treatments for analysis via PCR.
  • - While no significant differences were found between the groups initially, there was a notable reduction in salivary viral load across all groups, particularly with povidone iodine mouth rinse, suggesting its potential benefit

Acta Odontol Scand

March 2023

Department of Oral Medicine and Pathology, Institute of Odontology, University of Gothenburg, Goteborg, Sweden.

Objectives: The soluble bacterial pattern recognition receptor, sCD14 augments inflammatory responses in oral cavity. The aim of the study was to investigate whether patients with geographic tongue (GT) with and without fissured tongue (FT) have impaired inflammatory regulation, manifesting as increased levels of sCD14 in the saliva.

Material And Methods: An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was used to measure the amount of sCD14 in whole and parotid saliva of patients diagnosed with GT (GT whole, n = 21; GT parotid, n = 23) and control subjects (GT whole, n = 25; GT parotid, n = 18).

The geyser sign is the flow of arthrographic contrast or joint fluid from the glenohumeral joint across the acromioclavicular joint (AC) and occurs when fluid erupts from the superior aspect of the AC joint during arthrography. The cyst's pathogenesis is linked to a rotator cuff tear and an increase in the amount of fluid in the cyst. This fluid escapes through a one-way valve created by a defect in the AC joint capsule.
