Background: Heat-inactivated probiotics (HPs) may provide an effective alternative to live probiotics (P) by avoiding their risks (eg, probiotic sepsis) while retaining the benefits. We assessed the safety and efficacy of a HP in very preterm (VP: gestation <32 weeks) infants.
Methods: VP infants were randomly allocated to receive a HP or P mixture ( M-16V, subsp.

Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG) is a widely used and extensively researched probiotic. Probiotic effects are considered to be strain specific. We aimed to comprehensively assess the strain-specific effects of LGG in preterm infants.

Introduction: Ongoing advances in genetic technology may soon provide prenatal screening for multiple genetic conditions.
Aims: The aims were to investigate what prenatal screening test characteristics women prioritise and their willingness to pay for these tests.
Methods: We designed an online survey incorporating a series of discrete choice scenarios.

Background: There is limited evidence regarding the optimal time to commence parenteral nutrition (PN) in term and late preterm infants.
Design: Single-centre, non-blinded, exploratory randomised controlled trial.
Setting: A level-3 neonatal unit in a stand-alone paediatric hospital.

Objective: Our study focussed on the obstetric and psychosocial outcomes of pregnant women with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) who received care via a specialist antenatal clinic in Western Australia.
Method: This study is a retrospective examination of outcomes for 80 women with a confirmed diagnosis of BPD, with findings compared with published population outcome data for the state.
Results: Pregnant women with BPD appeared to be at a risk of complications including pre-eclampsia and special care nursery admission for their newborns when compared to population data.

The structure and function of infant skin is not fully developed until 34 weeks of gestation, and this immaturity is associated with risk of late-onset sepsis (LOS). Topical coconut oil improves preterm-infant skin integrity and may reduce LOS. However, data on early-life skin-microbiome succession and potential effects of emollient skin care in preterm infants are scarce.

Purpose: To meet the demand for cervical cancer care in Africa, access to surgical and radiation therapy services needs to be understood. We thus mapped the availability of gynecologic and radiation therapy equipment and staffing for treating cervical cancer.
Methods And Materials: We collected data on gynecologic and radiation oncology staffing, equipment, and infrastructure capacities across Africa.

Probiotics are known to decrease incidences of necrotising enterocolitis, feeding intolerance, late-onset sepsis, and mortality in preterm infants. Administering an adequate dose is important for optimizing the benefits and safety of probiotics. We conducted a systematic review to assess the effect of probiotic dose escalation on clinical outcomes and gut microbiota in preterm neonates.

Background: Our previous strain-specific systematic review (SR) showed that Lactobacillus reuteri (LR) DSM 17938 reduces necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), late-onset sepsis (LOS), and time to full feeds (TFF) in preterm infants. Considering progress in the field over the past 6 years, we aimed to update our SR.
Methods: SR of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and non-RCTs was conducted.

Crigler-Najjar is a rare, autosomal recessive disorder that results in mutations causing a complete absence (type I) or deficiency (type II) of the hepatic uridine diphospho-glucuronosyl transferase (UDPGT) enzyme. Both forms, however, result in unconjugated hyperbilirubinaemia which can lead to kernicterus and potentially death. Phenobarbitone can be used as an enzyme inducer in Type II to facilitate a reduction in total serum bilirubin.

Around half of the two million stillbirths occurring worldwide each year are preventable. This review compiles the most up-to-date evidence to inform stillbirth prevention. Many general maternal health interventions also reduce the risk of stillbirth, for example, antenatal care attendance.

Aim: We introduced routine probiotic supplementation (RPS) of preterm infants in June 2012. We previously reported that RPS reduced the incidence of necrotising enterocolitis (NEC) and mortality in such infants. In this study, we assessed if the benefits of RPS were sustained for infants in the current era.

Intravascular leiomyomatosis (IVL) is a rare benign smooth muscle neoplasm growing within the pelvic venous system, often with caval and intracardiac extension. It frequently coexists with uterine leiomyomas or occurs in women with a history of myomectomy or hysterectomy. IVL is often asymptomatic until intracardiac extension occurs, and carries a risk of sudden death, necessitating timely diagnosis and management.

Anaemia in pregnancy is common, however, only a few cases of pregnancy-associated autoimmune haemolytic anaemia have been documented. Typically, such cases involve a positive direct antiglobulin test and have the potential to cause haemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn. Rarely, no autoantibodies are detected.

The perinatal period is one of increased vulnerability to parents experiencing the onset of, or an increase of existing, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) symptoms. Existing OCD and perinatal mental health best practice guidelines do not detail specific considerations relevant to OCD in the perinatal period ('Perinatal OCD'). Perinatal OCD risks being undiagnosed or misdiagnosed, and subsequently untreated or mistreated, with potential negative impacts for individuals and families experiencing this problem, highlighting the importance of specific guidance.

Prenatal screening has evolved rapidly following the introduction of non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT), with screening now available for an increasing number of conditions. We explored the attitudes and expectations of women within the context of using NIPT to detect multiple different single gene and chromosome conditions during pregnancy. An online survey was used to assess these issues with a sample of 219 women from Western Australia.

Registry randomised clinical trials (RRCTs) have the potential to provide pragmatic answers to important clinical questions. RRCTs can be embedded into large population-based registries or smaller single site registries to provide timely answers at a reduced cost compared with traditional randomised controlled trials. RRCTs can take a number of forms in addition to the traditional individual-level randomised trial, including parallel group trials, platform or adaptive trials, cluster randomised trials and cluster randomised stepped-wedge trials.

Gut dysbiosis is associated with sepsis and necrotizing enterocolitis in preterm infants, which can adversely affect long-term growth and neurodevelopment. We aimed to synthesise evidence for the effect of probiotic supplementation on growth and neurodevelopmental outcomes in preterm infants. MEDLINE, EMBASE, EMCARE, Cochrane CENTRAL, and grey literature were searched in February 2022.
