Cureus

November 2023

Department of Paediatrics, King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz University Hospital, Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University, Riyadh, SAU.

Ptosis in pediatrics is commonly attributed to neurological causes. Rarely, chronic inflammation of the upper eyelid and the formation of giant papillary conjunctivitis due to vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) may lead to ptosis. In this case report, we present an eight-year-old girl with conjunctivitis who was referred to a pediatric neurology service for evaluation of ptosis.

Background: Due to the unmet need for valid instruments that evaluate critical components of simulation scenarios, this research aimed to develop and validate an instrument that measures the quality of healthcare simulation scenarios.

Methods: A sequential transformative mixed-method research design was used to conduct the study. The development and validation of the instrument involved two phases: the qualitative phase, which included defining the instrument's theoretical background and instrument construction, followed by the quantitative phase, where the instrument was piloted and validated.

This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to examine the effect of the antioxidant alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) on various cardiometabolic risk factors and hormonal parameters in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). We searched PubMed, EMBASE, SCOPUS, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science databases without language restrictions until May 2023 to find randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that assessed the impact of ALA supplementation on anthropometric, glycemic, lipid, oxidative stress, and hormonal parameters in women with PCOS. Outcomes were summarized using the standardized mean difference (SMD) and 95% confidence interval (CI) in a random-effects model.

Data on the role of CYP2D6 and CYP3A4/5 polymorphisms in relation to risperidone (RIS) pharmacokinetics (PK) in children are relatively limited and inconsistent. This is partially attributable to the limited coverage of CYP2D6 and CYP3A4/5 metabolizer phenotypes, particularly those of poor and ultrarapid metabolizers (PMs and UMs), which has led to calls for studies of populations with a non-European background that may carry variants that are less frequent in Europeans. Children ≤ 18 years old with at least 8 weeks of a RIS-based regimen were recruited from three autism centers in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
