Preoperative coagulopathy and blood transfusion requirements in children with intraventricular lesions undergoing neurosurgery: a retrospective cohort study.

Purpose: Pediatric patients undergoing neurosurgery pose risk of perioperative hemorrhage and clotting dysfunction which is increased in tumors with high vascularity, endothelial exposure, and necrosis. Lesions affecting the ventricular system may arise from several etiologies, including rare tumors. The present study aimed to study the preoperative coagulation and transfusion profile of pediatric patients undergoing neurosurgery for intraventricular lesions.

Brain tumor and mood disorders: a retrospective analysis of anxiety and depression in patients with primary and metastatic brain tumors.

Brain tumors are associated with a dismal prognosis, and the diagnosis often evokes significant psychological distress. However, the progression of emotional well-being throughout the clinical course of brain tumors remains poorly understood. This study aims to assess the prevalence of anxiety and depression in brain tumor patients and to identify the risk factors associated with postoperative emotional derangement in glioma and metastatic groups seperately.

Radiomic nomograms in CT diagnosis of gall bladder carcinoma: a narrative review.

Radiomics is a method that extracts many features from medical images using various algorithms. Medical nomograms are graphical representations of statistical predictive models that produce a likelihood of a clinical event for a specific individual based on biological and clinical data. The radiomic nomogram was first introduced in 2016 to study the integration of specific radiomic characteristics with clinically significant risk factors for patients with colorectal cancer lymph node metastases.

CDUNeXt: efficient ossification segmentation with large kernel and dual cross gate attention.

Ossification of the ligamentum flavum (OLF) is the main causative factor of spinal stenosis, but how to accurately and efficiently identify the ossification region is a clinical pain point and an urgent problem to be solved. Currently, we can only rely on the doctor's subjective experience for identification, with low efficiency and large error. In this study, a deep learning method is introduced for the first time into the diagnosis of ligamentum flavum ossificans, we proposed a lightweight, automatic and efficient method for identifying ossified regions, called CDUNeXt.

The effect of a new thinking guidance of OPACCUS for shock on the 30-day mortality: A multicenter, prospective, observational, cohort study.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine whether our new thinking guidance named OPACCUS (oxygen metabolism, perfusion, arterial tension, cardiac output, systemic congestion, unregulated host response and search for inciting illness event) with 7 questions you need to ask before shock therapy and evidences provided by critical ultrasound considering hemodynamics, the unregulated host response and inciting illness event would improve mortality in shock patients.

Design: A multicenter, prospective, observational cohort study.

Setting: Intensive care units of 20 hospitals in Southwest China.

Repair of Cleft Palate in Adult Patients; Impact of Speech Therapy Following Surgical Intervention in Africa.

Cleft lip and palate anomalies constitute both aesthetic and functional impairments for affected individuals. While an individual with an unrepaired cleft palate may adjust somewhat to the associated feeding challenges as he or she gets older, the consequent speech impairment is amenable primarily to surgery. It is pertinent to assess how well speech function is restored in individuals with cleft after surgical repairs.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to cross-culturally translate a questionnaire about gynecological and pelvic pain symptoms (ENDOPAIN-4D) patient-reported outcome measurement (PROM) into Chinese and evaluate its reliability and validity.

Methods: The questionnaire was translated according to Brislin's classic back-translation model. We conducted cultural debugging through cognitive interviews with Chinese-speaking women who had experienced pelvic pain (n = 24).

We aim to investigate the proportion and function of regulatory T (Treg) cells, as well as mTORC activity in chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (CIDP) patients. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from 15 CIDP and healthy controls (HC) were collected. Treg and responsive T (Tresp) cells were isolated.

Detection of Retinal and Choriocapillaris Microvascular Changes in Retinal Vein Occlusion and Fellow Eyes by Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Introduction: This study aims to summarize the retinal and choroidal microvascular features detected by optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) in the affected and fellow eyes of patients with retinal vein occlusion (RVO).

Methods: A comprehensive search of the PubMed, Embase, and Ovid databases was conducted to identify studies comparing OCTA metrics among RVO, RVO-fellow, and control eyes. Outcomes of interest included parameters related to foveal avascular zone (FAZ) and fovea- and optic nerve head (ONH)-centered perfusion measurements of superficial capillary plexus (SCP), deep capillary plexus (DCP), and choriocapillaris layer.

Machine Learning Models Decoding the Association Between Urinary Stone Diseases and Metabolic Urinary Profiles.

Employing advanced machine learning models, we aim to identify biomarkers for urolithiasis from 24-h metabolic urinary abnormalities and study their associations with urinary stone diseases. We retrospectively recruited 468 patients at Peking Union Medical College Hospital who were diagnosed with urinary stone disease, including renal, ureteral, and multiple location stones, and had undergone a 24-h urine metabolic evaluation. We applied machine learning methods to identify biomarkers of urolithiasis from the urinary metabolite profiles.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation-Electroencephalography (TMS-EEG) in Neurosurgery: Unexplored Path Towards Personalized Brain Surgery.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation-Electroencephalography (TMS-EEG) is a non-operative technique that allows for magnetic cortical stimulation (TMS) and analysis of the electrical currents generated in the brain (EEG). Despite the regular utilization of both techniques independently, little is known about the potential impact of their combination in neurosurgical practice. This scoping review, conducted following PRISMA guidelines, focused on TMS-EEG in epilepsy, neuro-oncology, and general neurosurgery.

Breaking Barriers: Empowering Cervical Cancer Screening with HPV Self-Sampling for Sex Workers and Formerly Incarcerated Women in Toronto.

Background: Although cervical cancer (CC) is highly preventable through appropriate screening methods like the Papanicolaou (Pap) test, which enables early detection of malignant and precancerous lesions, access to such screening has not been equitable across social groups. Sex workers and people with records of incarceration are among the most under-screened populations in Ontario. Little is known about the acceptability and feasibility of HPV self-sampling (HPV-SS) as an alternative cervical cancer screening method for these groups.

Primary Central Nervous System Lymphoma (PCNSL) Following Thyroid Cancer Surgery: A Case Report of Misdiagnosed Brain Metastasis and Literature Review.

Unlabelled: This article reports a rare case of primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL) found in a patient with thyroid cancer after surgery.

Methods: The patient was initially misdiagnosed with brain metastases, and the diagnosis of PCNSL was later confirmed by pathology.

Results: The analysis of this case and review of the relevant literature explores the possible mechanisms of the coexistence of thyroid cancer and PCNSL, as well as their diagnostic, differential diagnostic, and therapeutic challenges.

Moving Beyond the Bladder Diary: Does New Technology Now Allow Us to Take Investigation of LUTS Into the Community? ICI-RS 2024.

Context: Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms (LUTS) are defined by their distressing effect on patients' day-to-day life. Given the pressures on secondary care resources, LUTS may be overlooked or inadequately assessed and therefore patients may be burdened for an extended period before treatment.

Methods: In a debate held at the International Consultation on Incontinence Research Society (ICI-RS) meeting in Bristol in June 2024, we considered how new technologies might contribute to an expedited, dignified and effective investigation of LUTS.

Predicting intra-abdominal candidiasis in elderly septic patients using machine learning based on lymphocyte subtyping: a prospective cohort study.

Objective: Intra-abdominal candidiasis (IAC) is difficult to predict in elderly septic patients with intra-abdominal infection (IAI). This study aimed to develop and validate a nomogram based on lymphocyte subtyping and clinical factors for the early and rapid prediction of IAC in elderly septic patients.

Methods: A prospective cohort study of 284 consecutive elderly patients diagnosed with sepsis and IAI was performed.

Evaluating PAX1/JAM3 methylation for triage in HPV 16/18-infected women.

Objective: Referring all women who tested positive for human papillomavirus (HPV) 16/18 to colposcopy may lead to potential over-referral issues. Triage tests based on cytology results face challenges in achieving accurate diagnoses. Our study aims to assess the clinical effectiveness of PAX1/JAM3 methylation (CISCER) test as a triage method for HPV 16/18-positive women.

Surgical treatment of Gorham-Stout disease combined with scoliosis: a case report and literature review.

Background: Gorham-Stout disease (GSD) is a rare disease characterized by osteolysis and lymphatic malformations. GSD involving the spine is exceptionally rare and lacks a standard cure. The aim of this article was to report a case of GSD with scoliosis treated via corrective surgery and medication.

Prognostic implications of increased and final quantitative flow ratios in patients treated with drug-coated balloons physiological evaluation after DCB in de novo lesions.

Background: Few studies investigated the implications of post-PCI QFR and post-PCI ΔQFR (absolute increase of QFR) in de novo lesions of small coronary disease after drug-coated balloon (DCB).

Objectives: We sought to investigate the prognostic implications of post-PCI QFR and post-PCI ΔQFR in patients who received DCB only.

Methods: Patients were divided according to the optimal cutoff value of the post-PCI QFR and the post-PCI ΔQFR.

Empagliflozin in acute myocardial infarction in patients with and without type 2 diabetes: A pre-specified analysis of the EMPACT-MI trial.

Aims: In the EMPACT-MI trial, empagliflozin reduced heart failure (HF) hospitalizations but not mortality in acute myocardial infarction (MI). Contemporary reports of clinical event rates with and without type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in acute MI trials are sparse. The treatment effect of empagliflozin in those with and without T2DM in acute MI is unknown.

The Family Medicine Research Summit culminated in a strategic action plan to enhance research in family medicine and expand the primary care research workforce. The strategic plan focuses on infrastructure, mentorship, and funding objectives needed for robust family medicine research. Trainees play a central role in the success of the strategic plan.
