Insurmountable evidence has demonstrated a strong association between Alzheimer's disease (AD) and cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA), along with various other cerebrovascular diseases. One form of CAA, which is the accumulation of amyloid-beta peptides (Aβ) along cerebral vessel walls, impairs perivascular drainage pathways and contributes to cerebrovascular dysfunction in AD. To date, CAA research has been primarily focused on arterial Aβ, while the accumulation of Aβ in veins and venules were to a lesser extent.

Targeting cardiovascular inflammation: next steps in clinical translation.

Eur Heart J

January 2021

Brigham and Women's Hospital, Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, Harvard Medical School, 75 Francis Street, Boston, MA 02115, USA.

Systemic vascular inflammation plays multiple maladaptive roles which contribute to the progression and destabilization of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). These roles include: (i) driving atheroprogression in the clinically stable phase of disease; (ii) inciting atheroma destabilization and precipitating acute coronary syndromes (ACS); and (iii) responding to cardiomyocyte necrosis in myocardial infarction (MI). Despite an evolving understanding of these biologic processes, successful clinical translation into effective therapies has proven challenging.

Evaluating forest resilience to global threats using functional response traits and network properties.

Ecol Appl

July 2020

CEF, Université du Québec à Montréal, Centre d'étude de la forêt, uqam Case postale 8888, succursale Centre-ville, Montreal, Quebec, H3C 3P8, Canada.

Article Synopsis
  • Ecosystem functions of forests face threats from global changes like climate warming, land-use changes, and invasive species, necessitating new resilience-based management strategies.
  • A multidimensional approach focusing on species traits and forest connectivity is proposed to assess forest resilience in a rural landscape of southeastern Canada, comparing two management strategies: functional enrichment and multi-species plantations.
  • Results indicate both strategies improve resilience by enhancing functional diversity and connectivity, but prioritizing functional enrichment in less diverse patches is more effective, while randomly distributed plantations increase connectivity more than those in specific areas.

Although brief alcohol intervention can reduce alcohol use for both men and women, health care providers (HCPs) are less likely to discuss alcohol use or deliver brief intervention to women compared to men. This secondary analysis examined whether previously reported outcomes from a cluster randomized trial of a clinical decision support system (CDSS)-prompting delivery of a brief alcohol intervention (an educational alcohol resource) for patients drinking above cancer guidelines-were moderated by patients' sex. Patients ( = 5702) enrolled in a smoking cessation program at primary care sites across Ontario, Canada, were randomized to either the intervention (CDSS) or control arm (no CDSS).

Background: High-quality communication about end-of-life care results in greater patient and family satisfaction. End-of-life discussions should occur early during the patient's disease trajectory and yet is often addressed only when patients become severely ill. As a result, end-of-life discussions are commonly initiated during unplanned hospital admissions, which create additional challenges for physicians, patients, and families.

Failure of Alzheimer's disease clinical trials to improve or stabilize cognition has led to the need for a better understanding of the driving forces behind cognitive decline in the presence of active disease processes. To dissect contributions of individual pathologies to cognitive function, we used the TgF344-AD rat model, which recapitulates the salient hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease pathology observed in patient populations (amyloid, tau inclusions, frank neuronal loss, and cognitive deficits). scyllo-Inositol treatment attenuated amyloid-β peptide in disease-bearing TgF344-AD rats, which rescued pattern separation in the novel object recognition task and executive function in the reversal learning phase of the Barnes maze.

RACS: rapid analysis of ChIP-Seq data for contig based genomes.

BMC Bioinformatics

October 2019

Department of Chemistry and Biology, Ryerson University, 350 Victoria St, Toronto, M5B 2K3, Canada.

Background: Chromatin immunoprecipitation coupled to next generation sequencing (ChIP-Seq) is a widely-used molecular method to investigate the function of chromatin-related proteins by identifying their associated DNA sequences on a genomic scale. ChIP-Seq generates large quantities of data that is difficult to process and analyze, particularly for organisms with a contig-based sequenced genomes that typically have minimal annotation on their associated set of genes other than their associated coordinates primarily predicted by gene finding programs. Poorly annotated genome sequence makes comprehensive analysis of ChIP-Seq data difficult and as such standardized analysis pipelines are lacking.
