Background: Genetic polymorphisms of molecules are known to cause individual differences in the therapeutic efficacy of anticancer drugs. However, to date, germline mutations (but not somatic mutations) for anticancer drugs have not been adequately studied. The objective of this study was to investigate the association between germline polymorphisms of gemcitabine metabolic and transporter genes with carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA 19-9) response (decrease ≥50% from the pretreatment level at 8 weeks) and overall survival (OS) in patients with metastatic pancreatic cancer who receive gemcitabine-based chemotherapy.

BMC Pregnancy Childbirth

June 2023

Division of Clinical Epidemiology, Research Center for Medical Sciences, The Jikei University School of Medicine, 3-25-8 Nishishimbashi, Minato-Ku, Tokyo, 105-8461, Japan.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigated the effectiveness of psychosocial intervention apps in preventing postpartum depression through a review of various clinical trials and databases from 2020 to 2023.
  • - After examining 2515 references, 16 studies were analyzed, revealing no significant differences in the onset of postpartum depression between app users and control groups, but notable improvements in depression scores in the app users.
  • - The findings suggest that while the apps may not significantly reduce the risk of developing postpartum depression, they do lower depression severity as measured by the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale, indicating potential benefits in prevention efforts.

What Is Known And Objective: In Japan, ledipasvir/sofosbuvir, elbasvir/grazoprevir and glecaprevir/pibrentasvir are recommended as first-line treatments for patients with untreated hepatitis C virus genotype 1. Although they have demonstrated a high efficacy in clinical trials, there are no direct comparative studies. Clarification of their effectiveness and safety in real-world clinical practice is required.

Objectives: The multidrug regimen with fluorouracil, leucovorin, irinotecan, and oxaliplatin (FOLFIRINOX) is widely used for recurrent pancreatic cancer after pancreatic resection. However, there are concerns about severe toxicities and poor tolerability of FOLFIRINOX in these patients because some suffer from surgery-associated malnutrition, weight loss, and diabetes mellitus. We evaluated the toxicity and tolerability of FOLFIRINOX in these patients.

Background: Data on FOLFIRINOX as a second-line chemotherapy for advanced pancreatic cancer are limited. In the JASPAC06 study-a nationwide, multicenter, observational study-FOLFIRINOX for patients with unresectable or recurrent pancreatic cancer as any line of treatment showed favorable efficacy and safety in Japanese clinical practice.

Methods: We performed exploratory analyses of patients with unresectable or recurrent pancreatic cancer who received FOLFIRINOX as the second-line chemotherapy in Japanese clinical settings.

Article Synopsis
  • Lymphangiomas are rare benign tumors linked to the lymphatic system, with a notable case involving a 35-year-old woman who had a rapidly growing cystic mass in her axilla, diagnosed as cystic lymphangioma after imaging studies.
  • The surgical procedure successfully identified and removed a single feeding lymphatic vessel using an indocyanine green (ICG) fluorescence imaging system, which helped in ensuring complete excision.
  • The case suggests that prior pregnancy could have caused mechanical obstruction leading to the adult-onset lymphangioma, and highlights the effectiveness of ICG imaging for such surgeries.

Background In Japan, prophylactic thyroidectomy involves out-of-pocket expense. The American Thyroid Association (ATA) recommends prophylactic thyroidectomy for medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) during early childhood in patients with multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2 (MEN2). The ATA reports a high frequency of postoperative complications in childhood, which also influenced the delay of prophylactic thyroidectomy in Japan.
