Filopodia are thin, actin-rich projection from the plasma membrane that promote cancer cell invasion and migration. Sex-determining region Y-related high-mobility group-box 4 (SOX4) is a crucial transcription factor that plays a role in the development and metastasis of colorectal cancer (CRC). However, the involvement of SOX4 in cytoskeleton remodeling in CRC remains unknown.

Matrix elasticity helps to direct bone cell differentiation, impact healing processes, and modify extracellular matrix deposition, all of which are required for tissue growth and maintenance. In this work, we evaluated the role of inorganic nanocrystals or mineral inducers such as nanohydroxyapatite, alkaline phosphatase, and nanoclay also known as montmorillonite deposited on vinyl-based hydrogels in generating matrices with different stiffness and their role in cell differentiation. Poly-2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (PD) and poly-2-hydroxypropylmethacrylamide (PH) are the two types of vinyl polymers chosen for preparing hydrogels via thermal cross-linking.

Osteonecrosis of the Knee: The Unintended Consequence of Steroid Abuse.

Clin Med Res

March 2024

Department of Orthopaedics, Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences, KIIT University, Bhubaneshwar, Odisha, India, Pin: 751024.

The anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties of steroids allow their use in a wide variety of rheumatological diseases, asthma, inflammatory bowel disease, cancer therapy, and severe viral infections. Though life-saving or organ-saving, long-term clinical use leads to a vast array of complications. Osteoporosis is the most common orthopedic side effect of steroid abuse, while osteonecrosis is a rare occurrence.

Background: The most common and convenient technique to provide antiplaque medicines is through mouth rinses, which have the advantage of accessing places that are difficult for a toothbrush to clean. Chlorhexidine and Listerine mouthwashes were tested for their effectiveness when used in addition to routine teeth cleaning techniques. However, the studies assessing the antibacterial effects of these among young adults are diversified and limited.

Background: Various clinical studies performed in adults have shown the relationship between craniofacial morphology and masticatory muscle function. However, the growth of the masticatory muscle has not received such attention, when compared with the volume of studies on the skeletal growth of face. With this background and considering the widespread use of ultrasonography (USG), the following study was undertaken to provide some insights into the relationship between muscle and bone and facial morphology.

Diagnostic delays in systemic vasculitides.

Rheumatol Int

June 2024

Department of Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology, Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences, KIIT University, Bhubaneswar, 751024, India.

Systemic vasculitides are among the less common disorders encountered in routine rheumatology practice. The low incidence and heterogeneous presentation at onset can potentially lead to delayed diagnosis. Not recognizing these in the early phase may prove detrimental, as some vasculitis may progress to a catastrophic course with major morbidity or mortality.

Introduction: Topical steroid damaged face (TSDF) is a common occurrence in the current scenario, where darker - skinned people believe having lighter-colored skin improves their prospects in all aspects of life. This has led to the abuse of topical corticosteroids with unrealistic expectations driven by ignorance of the adverse effects, particularly in the Indian population. As TSDF is virtually an epidemic in India and there is no treatment protocol for dermatologists, we conducted this study to find out what dermatologists prescribe and, in turn, serve as a foundation to develop guidelines in the future.

Floating Vegetated System (FVS) emerged as a green and sustainable technology, presenting a viable solution for treating heavy metals (HMs) contaminated water without disrupting the food web. Pistia stratiotes has been used in the design of FVS due to its abundance of aerenchyma tissues, which contribute to its ability to remain buoyant. FVS exhibited significant HMs removal efficiencies, with Pb top at average 84.

Objectives: Reactive arthritis (ReA) provides a unique opportunity to comprehend how a mucosal infection leads to inflammatory arthritis at a distant site without the apparent invasion of the pathogen. Unfortunately, conventional stool cultures after ReA provide limited information, and there is a dearth of metagenomic studies in ReA. The objective of this study was to identify gut microbiota associated with the development of ReA.

CKLF instigates a "cold" microenvironment to promote MYCN-mediated tumor aggressiveness.

Sci Adv

March 2024

Departments of Pharmacology, Physiology & Biophysics and Medicine, Section of Hematology and Medical Oncology, Cancer Research Center, Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine, Boston, MA, USA.

Solid tumors, especially those with aberrant MYCN activation, often harbor an immunosuppressive microenvironment to fuel malignant growth and trigger treatment resistance. Despite this knowledge, there are no effective strategies to tackle this problem. We found that chemokine-like factor () is highly expressed by various solid tumor cells and transcriptionally up-regulated by MYCN.

Myosin heavy chain-perinatal (MyHC-perinatal) is one of two development-specific myosin heavy chains expressed exclusively during skeletal muscle development and regeneration. The specific functions of MyHC-perinatal are unclear, although mutations are known to lead to contracture syndromes such as Trismus-pseudocamptodactyly syndrome. Here, we characterize the functions of MyHC-perinatal during skeletal muscle differentiation and regeneration.

Benchmarking institutional geriatric hip fracture management: a prelude to a care quality improvement initiative.

Eur J Orthop Surg Traumatol

April 2024

Department of Orthopaedics, Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences, KIIT University, Bhubaneshwar, Odisha, 751024, India.

Background: Fractures around the hip in older adults have increased in the last two decades, and the numbers are projected to rise over the next 30 years with estimates that half of them will occur in Asia. Proximal hip fractures should be operated within 48 h of injury to prevent poor outcomes. This study aims to benchmark current hip fracture care using quality improvement tools of care structure, care processes, and outcomes in a tertiary care hospital in Eastern India and determine the evidence-practice gaps and barriers to implementing the six best practices that reduce mortality and morbidity in fragility hip fractures.
