Iran is located along the Central Asian corridor, a natural artery that has served as a cross-continental route since the first anatomically modern human populations migrated out of Africa. We compiled and reanalyzed the HVS-I (hypervariable segment-I) of 3840 mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequences from 19 Iranian populations and from 26 groups from adjacent countries to give a comprehensive review of the maternal genetic variation and investigate the impact of historical events and cultural factors on the maternal genetic structure of modern Iranians. We conclude that Iranians have a high level of genetic diversity.

Our study presents an electrochromic sensor that operates without the need for enzymes or multiple oxidant reagents. This sensor is augmented with machine learning algorithms, enabling the identification, classification, and prediction of six different antioxidants with high accuracy. We utilized polyaniline (PANI), Prussian blue (PB), and copper-Prussian blue analogues (Cu-PBA) at their respective oxidation states as electrochromic materials (ECMs).

In this study, the carrier mobility of monolayer TiCO was evaluated by employing the Boltzmann transport equation and superconducting transition temperature () of TiCO was determined by utilizing the Migdal and Eliashberg formalism in the first-principles framework. In contrast to previous studies, the results reveal that optical phonons in monolayer TiCO have dominant roles in scattering processes, which significantly reduce the mobility of carriers. Alongside the rigid band model, the jellium model is implemented to investigate the screening effects on electron-phonon interactions.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

February 2023

Regional Centre of Advanced Technologies and Materials, Czech Advanced Technology and Research Institute, Palacký University in Olomouc, ̌Slechtitelů 27, Olomouc783 71, Czech Republic.

Upgrading of biomass wastes to value-added materials has been incessantly pursued worldwide with diverse applications, especially deploying photocatalytic composites encompassing metal oxides with acidic and carbon compounds. Herein, the fabrication of a morphologically unique acidic catalyst encompassing a two-dimensional (2D) TiO/g-CN heterojunction feature is described for the generation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF), which exploits the acidic/ionic liquid (IL) bifunctional photocatalysis under visible light. The structural integrity of the synthesized TiO/g-CN/SOH(IL) was corroborated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy-energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDX-EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), UV-vis, Tauc plots, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller-Barrett-Joyner-Halenda (BET-BJH) analyses.

Smart city management is facing a new challenge from littered face masks during COVID-19 pandemic. Addressing the issues of detection and collection of this hazardous waste that is littered in public spaces and outside the controlled environments, usually associated with biomedical waste, is urgent for the safety of the communities around the world. Manual management of this waste is beyond the capabilities of governments worldwide as the geospatial scale of littering is very high and also because this contaminated litter is a health and safety issue for the waste collectors.

A multiscale modeling and simulation approach, including first-principles calculations, ab initio molecular dynamics simulations, and a tight binding approach, is employed to study band flattening of the electronic band structure of oxidized monolayer graphene. The width of flat bands can be tuned by strain, the external electric field, and the density of functional groups and their distribution. A transition to a conducting state is found for monolayer graphene with impurities when it is subjected to an electric field of ∼1.

Department of Microbiology, School of Biology and Center of Excellence in Phylogeny of Living Organisms, College of Science, University of Tehran, 1417466191, Tehran, Iran.

The field of microbial pigments is an emerging area in natural products science. Carotenoids form a major class of such pigments and are found to be diversely synthesized by microorganisms that reside in hypersaline ecosystems to provide resistance against oxidative stress. Human cells can benefit from compounds such as carotenoids as antioxidant agents through either their capability to quench free radicals or their effect on promoting the antioxidant defense pathway.

Interrogating Amyloid Aggregates using Fluorescent Probes.

Chem Rev

December 2019

Department of Chemistry , Williams College, Williamstown , Massachusetts 01267 , United States.

Amyloids are a broad class of proteins and peptides that can misfold and assemble into long unbranched fibrils with a cross-β conformation. These misfolding and aggregation events are associated with the onset of a variety of human diseases, among them, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and Huntington disease. Our understanding of amyloids has been greatly supported by fluorescent molecular probes, such as thioflavin-T, which shows an increase in fluorescence emission upon binding to fibrillar aggregates.
