The obtained results of the study are based on observation of life quality of 98 patients which have undergone traditional and combined operation. The article presents quality life indices of healthy subjects and those operated. Traditionally operated patients were established to have lower quality life indices in 6 years after the operation provided in comparison with healthy subjects.

In general four types of endoscopic operations were performed: complete (subperiostal) lifting of forehead, the forehead and middle zone of face lifting, the forehead and face lifting, cervicoplasty, the forehead lifting and the twoplane lifting of face. There were presented possible complications of endoscopic operations, which are less frequent and severe than after performance of open interventions.

Eleven haplogroups have been found in the Belarussian gene pool (E, F*, G, I, I1b, J2, N3a*, Q*, R1*, R1a1, and R1b3). Haplogroup R1a1 is the most frequent; it includes 46% of all Y chromosomes in this sample.

Y chromosomes from representative sample of Eastern Ukrainians (94 individuals) were analyzed for composition and frequencies of haplogroups, defined by 11 biallelic loci located in non-recombining part of the chromosome (SRY1532, YAP, 92R7, DYF155S2, 12f2, Tat, M9, M17, M25, M89, and M56). In the Ukrainian gene, pool six haplogroups were revealed: E, F (including G and I), J, N3, P, and R1a1. These haplogroups were earlier detected in a study of Y-chromosome diversity on the territory of Europe as a whole.

We studied the influence of parental age on the degree of polyteny of giant chromosomes and expressivity of mutation eyeless in Drosophila melanogaster descendants. The parental age equal to six days exerted an adverse effect on the function of endoreduplication of giant chromosomes in strain eyeless. The highest degree of polyteny was observed in descendants of four- and ten-day imago.

The structure of female (mtDNA) and male (Y-chromosome haplotypes) lineages in the Yakut population was examined. To determine mtDNA haplotypes, sequencing of hypervariable segment I and typing of haplotype-specific point substitutions in the other parts of the mtDNA molecule were performed. Y haplogroups were identified through typing of biallelic polymorphisms in the nonrecombining part of the chromosome.

The effects of stress induced by hypothermia (+4 degrees C for 3 h) on the pathways of serotonin metabolism in the pineal gland and on its structure were studied in adult male Wistar rats. These experiments showed that the melatonin-forming function of the epiphysis undergoes phasic changes during adaptation: there was a significant increase during the first 15 min, which was followed by gradual inhibition (to initial by 30 min) and then sharp suppression (at 3 h). Suppression of the functional activity of the pineal gland occurred because of exclusion of a proportion of pinealocytes from the process of active functioning.

Glycerol increased the content of heme-containing metabolites in the serum and the total heme content in the liver and kidneys, and decreased the content of reduced glutathione and catalase activity in the examined organs. Superoxide dismutase activity increased in the liver and decreased in the kidneys.

Structural and functional changes in thymocytes, splenocytes and hepatocytes, taking place under gamma-irradiation of cellular suspensions were investigated. It was found that splenocytes begin to lose their functional activity and structural features at a dose of 2 Gy. Increasing the irradiation dose leads to the acceleration of these processes.

Experiments on rat model of stress-induced gastric ulcers revealed marked circulatory disturbances in ulcerated gastric mucosa associated with arteriolar spasm and venous congestion and leading to perivascular edema, diapedesis of erythrocytes, and microhemorrhages. These changes were most pronounced on day 1 after ulcer modeling and progressively decreased during healing (day 14-21). On day 3, arterial hyperemia developed against the background of venous congestion, which was probably related to progressive repair.

A steady increase of the number of persons with drug addiction has been noted both on Kharkov and Kharkov Province. Since 1996 a considerable number of HIV-infected persons has been detected among injecting drug users (80-82% of them infected parenterally). Rapid evaluation, carried out in 1997 within the project "Harm Reduction", served as the basis for the creation of the Charity Fund "Scarlet Ribbon" collaborating with the UNAIDS Representation in the Ukraine and other international organizations.

Analysis of records of the marriages that were contracted in the city of Poltava revealed an increase in outbreeding between 1960 and 1985 in the Poltava population. This was expressed in increased ethnic diversity, proportion of interethnic marriages, migration range, and the parent-offspring and average marital distances, whereas the proportion of the indigenous ethnic group (Ukrainians) decreased. By 1995, outbreeding decreased: the ethnic composition of the population became more homogeneous (98% Slavic), the proportion of Ukrainians and the frequency of monoethnic marriages increased, and the migration range decreased.

The interaction of Ag+ ions with ribonucleotides of canonical bases in aqueous solution was studied by differential UV spectroscopy. Atoms coordinating silver ions (N7, O6 of guanosine 5'-monophosphate, N3, O2 of cytidine 5'-monophosphate, N7, N1, N3 of adenosine 5'-monophosphate and N3 of uridine 5'-monophosphate) and the binding constants characterizing the formation of appropriate complexes were determined. The differences in the relative affinity of Ag+ ions for the atoms of nucleotide bases correlate with the potential on them.

The hepatoprotective properties of altan (obtained on the basis of ellagotannines from the cones of black alder Alnus glutinosa) are studied on the model of acute damage to the liver with tetrachloromethane. It is found that altan exhibits the hepatoprotective activity even in a dose of 1 mg/kg which is tenfold smaller compared to the dose of traditional flavonoid-based drugs. Altan limits choleopoiesis disorder, has an antiinflammatory and membrane stabilizing effect, and recovers physiological antioxidant system.
