The coastal area of João Pessoa city, Paraíba, Brazil, is densely populated and has a large flow of trade and services. More recently, this region has been suffering from the advance of the sea, which has caused changes in the shoreline and caused a decrease in the beach area and damage to various urban facilities. Thus, the spatiotemporal changes of the short- and long-term characteristics of the shoreline of João Pessoa city over the past 34 years (1985-2019) were calculated and the forcing mechanisms responsible for the shoreline changes were analyzed.

Indigenous people constitute an important section of society in many countries. Despite being a numerically smaller section, they are culturally diverse and distributed mostly in valuable natural resources-rich regions worldwide. In the era of globalization, industrialization, and trade liberalization, indigenous communities have become more vulnerable to displacement, land alienation, cultural erosion, and social exclusion.

Droughts are complex natural phenomena that influence society's development in different aspects; therefore, monitoring their behavior and future trends is a useful task to assist the management of natural resources. In addition, the use of satellite-estimated rainfall data emerges as a promising tool to monitor these phenomena in large spatial domains. The Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) products have been validated in several studies and stand out among the available products.

Background: The role of vitamin D in the susceptibility and severity of various viral diseases has been well documented. Recently, some reports highlighted the possible importance of vitamin D in severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Although India receives adequate sunlight throughout the year, the majority of Indians are deficient in vitamin D levels.

Background: Cluster of differentiation 14 (CD14) plays a crucial role in the innate immune response of the host in protection against various pathogens. The importance of soluble CD14 in autoimmune disorders has been described in different populations. However, the role of sCD14 in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is poorly understood.

Aims: Secretory clusterin (sCLU) plays an important role in tumor development and cancer progression. However, the molecular mechanisms and physiological functions of sCLU in oral cancer is unclear. We examined the impact of sCLU-mediated autophagy in cell survival and apoptosis inhibition in oral cancer.

Castor, a non-food, dedicated bioenergy crop, has immense potential to be used for phytoremediation/revegetation of heavy metal contaminated sites. In the previous study, we identified arsenate [As(V)]-tolerant (WM) and As(V)-sensitive (GCH 2) genotypes of castor (Ricinus communis L.) with differential accumulation and tolerance of arsenic [As].

Studying the behavior of drought and its short-, medium- and long-term features throughout a region is very important for the creation of adequate public policies and actions aimed at the economic and social development of the region. Furthermore, the frequency and intensity of weather-related natural hazards (rainfall, heatwaves and droughts) are increasing every year, and these extreme weather-related events are potent threats worldwide, particularly in developing countries, such as India. Thus, this paper aims to evaluate the drought behavior in the Odisha region of India (1983-2018) by using the standardized precipitation index (SPI) and the new drought severity classification (DS).

Background: Expression and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of TLR4/9 and CYP1A1 genes are vital for cervical squamous cell carcinoma (CSCC) but considerably vary in different populations.
Methods: A total of 255-subjects from Jharkhand (130-cases, 125-controls) were utilized to obtain the expression/SNP status of TLR4/9, CYP1A1, and E6 (HPV16/18) by RT-PCR, WB, and allele-specific-PCR followed by sequencing.
Results: Over-expression of TLR4/9 and high infection of HPV16/18(78.

Background: Severe acute respiratory syndrome corona virus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) is believed to have emerged from Wuhan, China, and spreads over 215 countries worldwide. The spike protein of SARS-CoV-2 binds to angiotensin-converting enzyme-2 (ACE-2) receptors and enter the host cells. Several reports have been highlighted the importance of ACE-2 on the pathogenesis of COVID-19.

Objectives: Mannose-binding lectin (MBL), an essential innate immune molecule, enhances the opsonization process and activates the complement system. Genetic variations at the promoter and coding region of the MBL-2 gene have been associated with susceptibility to systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE); however, reports remained inconsistent. The present study performs a meta-analysis of published peer-reviewed articles to draw a definitive conclusion.

Mobilization of metals in wetland ecosystems is a function of the behaviour of a specific metal species and is dependent largely on the prevailing micro-environmental conditions. Apparently, five different chemical forms of metals are known with varying affinity to binding sites, mobility, bioavailability and toxicity. Quantification of these forms of metals in the soils is imperative in predicting their biogeochemical fate and toxicity.
