High Thermal Conductive Liquid Crystal Elastomer Nanofibers.

Nano Lett

August 2024

Department of Mechanical Engineering, College of Design and Engineering, National University of Singapore, Singapore 117575, Singapore.

Liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs), consisting of polymer networks and liquid crystal mesogens, show a reversible phase change under thermal stimuli. However, the kinetic performance is limited by the inherently low thermal conductivity of the polymers. Transforming amorphous bulk into a fiber enhances thermal conductivity through the alignment of polymer chains.

College of Polymer Science and Engineering, State Key Laboratory of Polymer Materials Engineering, Sichuan University, Chengdu, 610065, P. R. China.

The nacre-inspired multi-nanolayer structure offers a unique combination of advanced mechanical properties, such as strength and crack tolerance, making them highly versatile for various applications. Nevertheless, a significant challenge lies in the current fabrication methods, which is difficult to create a scalable manufacturing process with precise control of hierarchical structure. In this work, a novel strategy is presented to regulate nacre-like multi-nanolayer films with the balance mechanical properties of stiffness and toughness.

High-toughness biodegradable poly(lactic acid) (PLA) has always been intensively pursued on the way of replacing traditional petroleum-based plastics. Regulating microstructures to achieve self-toughening holds great promise due to avoidance of incorporating other heterogeneous components. Herein, we propose a straightforward and effective way to tailor microstructures and properties of PLA through melt-stretching and quenching of slightly crosslinked samples.

Rev Sci Instrum

January 2023

National Engineering Research Center for Advanced Polymer Processing Technology, Key Laboratory of Materials Processing and Mold (Zhengzhou University), Ministry of Education, Zhengzhou University, Zhengzhou 450002, China.

A combined melt-stretching and quenching setup is designed and developed to allow experimental investigations of polymer crystallization under the complex flow-temperature environments comparable to those encountered in the actual industrial processing. The melt-stretching proceeds by two drums rotating in the opposite directions with simultaneous recording of a stress-strain curve, where the Hencky strain and strain rate (≤233 s) are adjustable over a large range. After stretching, liquid N is used as a cooling medium to quench the free-standing melt, which is sprayed directly to the deformed melt driven by an electric pump.

Conductive hydrogels (CHs) have attracted considerable attentions in the fields of wearable electronics, disease diagnosis, and artificial intelligence. However, it is still a great challenge to prepare a single CH system with integrated characteristics of high stretchability, good transparency, and multisensory function through a simple fabrication process. Herein, carboxylic cellulose nanofibers (CCNF) were used to assist the homogeneous distribution of opaque conductive poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT: PSS) into the crosslinked polyacrylamide network for the fabrication of stretchable and transparent interpenetrating network CH, aiming for a high-performance multisensory system.

Phase Engineering of Metastable Transition Metal Dichalcogenides via Ionic Liquid Assisted Synthesis.

ACS Nano

September 2022

Department of Chemistry, Key Laboratory of Advanced Energy Materials Chemistry (MOE), TKL of Metal and Molecule-Based Material Chemistry, College of Chemistry, Nankai University, Tianjin 300071, PR China.

Metallic group VIB transition metal dichalcogenides (1T-TMDs) have attracted great interest because of their outstanding performance in electrocatalysis, supercapacitors, batteries, and so on, whereas the strict fabrication conditions and thermodynamical metastability of 1T-TMDs greatly restrict their extensive applications. Therefore, it is significant to obtain stable and high-concentration 1T-TMDs in a simple and large-scale strategy. Herein, we report a facile and large-scale synthesis of high-concentration 1T-TMDs via an ionic liquid (IL) assisted hydrothermal strategy, including 1T-MoS (the obtained MoS sample was denoted as MoS-IL), 1T-WS, 1T-MoSe, and 1T-WSe.

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have attracted tremendous research interest due to their unique atomic structure, maximized atom utilization, and remarkable catalytic performance. Among the SACs, the carbon-supported SACs have been widely investigated due to their easily controlled properties of the carbon substrates, such as the tunable morphologies, ordered porosity, and abundant anchoring sites. The electrochemical performance of carbon-supported SACs is highly related to the morphological structure of carbon substrates (macro-environment) and the local coordination environments of center metals (micro-environment).

The electro-mechanical response of conductive carbon-nanotube(CNT)-polymer composites is vital when they are used as smart-sensing materials. Clarifying the variation trend of resistance with strain is the key to design and regulate the piezoresistive property of such material. Here, we present some finite element simulations to predict the electro-mechanical response using a geometrical model comprising two hollow cylindrical CNTs and a cuboid matrix.

April 2022

Laboratory of Advanced Materials, Shanghai Key Lab of Molecular Catalysis and Innovative Materials, Fudan University, Shanghai, 200438, P. R. China.

Perovskite-type oxides are widely used for energy conversion and storage, but their rate-inhibiting phase transition and large volume change hinder the applications of most perovskite-type oxides for high-rate electrochemical energy storage. Here, it is shown that a cation-deficient perovskite CeNb O (CNO) can store a sufficient amount of lithium at a high charge/discharge rate, even when the sizes of the synthesized particles are on the order of micrometers. At 60 C (15 A g ), corresponding to a 1 min charge, the CNO anode delivers over 52.
