The evolutionary origins of specialized organs pose significant challenges for empirical studies, as most such organs evolved millions of years ago. The Northern snakehead (Channa argus), an air-breathing fish, possesses a suprabranchial organ, a common feature of the Anabantoidei, offering a unique opportunity to investigate the function and evolutionary origins of specialized organs. In this study, a high-quality chromosome-level reference genome of C.

In recent years, CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing technology has emerged as a powerful genetic tool with potential application in aquaculture. Crassostrea gigas, as a valuable species in aquaculture, holds promising potential for genetic enhancement and breeding through gene editing. However, the lack of efficient promoters for driving exogenous gene expression poses a major obstacle in bivalve gene editing.

The mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling cascade, integral to cellular regulation, orchestrates cell growth, differentiation, stress response, and inflammatory reactions to adapt to challenging environments. The northern snakeheads (Channa argus), a valuable freshwater species known for its hypoxia tolerance, rapid growth, and high nutritional value, lacks comprehensive research on its mapk gene family. In this study, we identified 16 mapk genes in northern snakeheads, among which mapk8, mapk12 and mapk14 have duplicate copies.

The Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) is a global aquaculture species of economic significance. Selective breeding programs have been conducted to produce multiple strains with fast growth as well as other desirable traits. However, due to the phenotypic plasticity of oysters, challenges existed for precise germplasm identification among selectively bred strains.

The concept and application of probiotic intervention for restoring intestinal microbial dysbiosis induced by antibiotics in aquaculture are still in early stages. This study aimed to investigate potential responses of various recovery strategies, including natural recovery and probiotic intervention, in restoring the growth and intestinal microbial community of Penaeus vannamei following florfenicol perturbation. The basal diet (control, CN) was supplemented with florfenicol (FC) or Lactobacillus plantarum W2 (LM) throughout the entire feeding trial.

Erhai Lake, a highland lake situated in Southwest China, provides critical aquatic protein sources for the local community, and its preservation is vital due to the sensitivity of alpine freshwater ecosystems to disturbance. However, there is a lack of research on the contamination status of methylmercury (MeHg) in aquatic organisms of the Erhai Lake Basin. MeHg concentrations in important commercial fish species from the Erhai Lake were examined, and the potential health risks associated with human consumption were assessed.

As a widely available, low-cost agricultural byproduct, bagasse is a potential solid carbon source and provides microbial attachment as a biofilm carrier. In this study, the effects of bagasse as a carbon source on biofloc formation, water quality, microbial community structure, and nitrogen conversion in a shrimp culture system were explored, and the performance of bagasse bioflocs was assessed. No bagasse was added to the control group (CK), and three bagasse addition groups were set up, with the floc content of the water maintained at 5 mL/L (BF5 group), 10 mL/L (BF10 group), and 15 mL/L (BF15 group).

(1) Background: In aquaculture, chronic stress due to high stocking density impairs animals' welfare and results in declined fishery production with low protein quality. However, most previous studies evaluated the effects of high stocking density on trout in freshwater rather than seawater. (2) Methods: Juvenile trout were reared for 84 days in circular tanks under three stocking densities, including low density ("LD", 9.

The Notch signaling pathway plays a pivotal role in governing cell fate determinations within the gonadal niche. This study provides an extensive elucidation of the male and female gonadal niches within Crassostrea gigas. Examination via transmission electron microscopy revealed the presence of desmosome-like connection not only between germ cells and niche cells but also among adjacent niche cells within the oyster gonad.

Gametogenesis drives the maturation of germ cell precursors into functional gametes, facilitated by interactions with the niche environment. However, the molecular mechanisms, especially in invertebrates, remain incompletely understood. In this study, the gonadal microenvironment and gametogenic processes in the Pacific oyster, a model for diffuse gonadal organization and periodic gametogenesis, are investigated.

Melanocyte differentiation is orchestrated by the master regulator transcription factor MITF. However, its ability to discern distinct binding sites linked to effective gene regulation remains poorly understood. This study aims to assess how co-activator acetyltransferase interacts with MITF to modulate their related lysine action, thereby mediating downstream gene regulation, including DNA affinity, stability, transcriptional activity, particularly in the process of shell pigmentation.

Chemokines are cytokines with chemoattractant capacities that exert their physiological functions through the binding of chemokine receptors. Thus, chemokine and receptor complexes exert important roles in regulating development and homeostasis during routine immune surveillance and inflammation. Compared to mammals, the physiology and structure of chemokine receptors in fish have not been systematically studied.

This study evaluated the effects of Bacillus subtilis BSXE-1601, applied either as dietary supplementation or water addition, on growth performance, immune responses, disease resistance of Penaeus vannamei, and microbiota in shrimp gut and rearing water. During the 42-day feeding experiment, shrimp were fed with basal diet (CO and BW group), basal diet supplemented with live strain BSXE-1601 at the dose of 1 × 10 CFU kg feed (BD group) and 15 mg kg florfenicol (FL group), and basal diet with strain BSXE-1601 added to water at the concentration of 1 × 10 CFU L every five days (BW group). Results showed that dietary supplementation of strain BSXE-1601 significantly promoted growth performance of shrimp, both in the diet and water, enhanced disease resistance against Vibrio parahaemolyticus (P < 0.

Unlabelled: Prostaglandins (PGs) are profound hormones in teleost sexual behavior, especially in mating. PGs act as pheromones that affect the olfactory sensory neurons of males, inducing the initiation of a series of mating behaviors. However, the molecular mechanism by which PGs trigger mating behavior in ovoviviparous teleosts is still unclear.

Marine bivalves are economically important and exhibit a remarkable diversity in shell color. The Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas stands out as an important economic species, with the successful development of four distinct color strains through selective breeding. While previous studies have shed light on the genetic mechanism underlying color segregation, the precise molecular regulatory mechanisms responsible for shell coloration in oysters remains elusive.

As an important input of environmental micropollutants into aquaculture environment, feed is now considered to be a critical factor in shaping gastrointestinal evacuation characteristics of animals. We analyzed the gastrointestinal evacuation characteristics and gut bacteria of Apostichopus japonicus within 30 h after feeding in recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) and explored the evacuation mechanism interacting by bacteria. The Gauss model was the most precise gastrointestinal evacuation curve, and 80% of gastrointestinal evacuation time was 27.
