Transfer learning aims to integrate useful information from multi-source datasets to improve the learning performance of target data. This can be effectively applied in genomics when we learn the gene associations in a target tissue, and data from other tissues can be integrated. However, heavy-tail distribution and outliers are common in genomics data, which poses challenges to the effectiveness of current transfer learning approaches.

Objective: Our primary objective is to investigate the causal relationships between 12 psychiatric disorders (PDs) and atrial fibrillation (AF), coronary artery disease (CAD), myocardial infarction (MI), and heart failure (HF).
Methods: Firstly, we used linkage disequilibrium score regression to calculate the genetic correlations between 12 PDs and 4 cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Subsequently, we performed two-sample and bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses of phenotypes with significant genetic correlations to explore the causal relationships between PDs and CVDs.

Background: The accelerated aging process worldwide is placing a heavy burden on countries. PM particulate matter exposure is a significant factor affecting human health and is crucial in the aging process.
Methods: We utilized data from China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) and the Survey of Health, Aging, and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) to study the relationship between PM exposure and the frailty index.

What Is Already Known About This Topic?: As one of the populations at high risk of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection, patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) require rapid and effective development of hepatitis B surface antibodies (anti-HBs).
What Is Added By This Report?: The short-course, high-dose regimen of hepatitis B vaccination rapidly induced comparable immunological responses to the routine regimen, achieving a seroconversion rate of 88.5%, a high-response rate of 64.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is an endocrine disruptor that poses multiple risks to human health. In particular, the potential adverse effects of maternal exposure to BPA on offspring warrant further investigation. In this study, pregnant mice were exposed to BPA throughout gestation and the effects of BPA on placental function, fetal development, and health risks in adult offspring were assessed.

: Coke oven emissions (COEs) are formed in the process of coking production, mainly composed of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and benzene; however, the health impacts of COE exposure in coking workers are not fully clear so far. We aimed to explore the associations of occupational COE exposure with pulmonary function, blood pressure, blood cell parameters, and blood biochemical indices, and to bolster health surveillance and disease prevention and control in coking workers. : We investigated 566 coking workers at a large state-owned enterprise coking plant in Taiyuan, Shanxi, China, measured the concentrations of plasma 16 PAHs and urinary phenol, assessed the health outcomes including pulmonary function, blood pressure, the levels of peripheral hematologic parameters and biochemical indices, and examined the associations of PAH and phenol concentrations with the health outcomes using multiple linear regressions, least absolute shrinkage and selection operator regression (LASSO), and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR).

Background: The present study aimed to explore the association between the inflammatory potential of diet, assessed by energy-adjusted dietary inflammatory index (E-DII) and reduced rank regression (RRR)-derived inflammatory dietary pattern, and the risk for cognitive impairment (CI) in community-dwelling older adults, especially in older adults with chronic diseases and multimorbidity.
Methods: A total of 549 older adults from Taiyuan city were included in the present cross-sectional study. The Chinese Version of the Mini-Mental State Examination (CMMSE) was used for the evaluation of cognitive function.

Background: Hemodialysis (HD) patients represent a high-risk group for hepatitis B infection. It is crucial to administer hepatitis B vaccination and stimulate higher and more sustained levels of anti-HBs. Our aim is to enhance the immunogenicity and persistence by implementing high-dose and prolonged hepatitis B vaccine schedule regimen in HD patients.

Pulmonary fibrosis is an end-stage respiratory disease characterized by fibroblast proliferation and accumulation of extracellular matrix and collagen, which is accompanied by inflammatory damage. The disease is mainly based on pulmonary dysfunction and respiratory failure, the incidence of it is increasing year by year, and the current treatment methods for it are limited. In recent years, it has been found that gut microbes play a crucial role in the pathogenesis and development of pulmonary fibrosis.

Vasculogenic mimicry (VM) describes a process by which tumor cells formed a novel microcirculation pattern in an endothelial cell-free manner. Clinically, VM is associated with aggressive phenotype and poor patient survival. However, the current models for investigating VM include 2D monolayer cultures, Matrigel-based cultures, and animal models, each of which has limitations.

Background: Previous studies have shown that hyponatremia was strongly associated with a poor prognosis of type 1 pulmonary hypertension, and our team's antecedent studies found that low serum sodium was associated with the severity and the length of hospitalization of pulmonary hypertension associated with left ventricular disease (PH-LHD). However, the relationship between serum sodium and the prognosis of PH-LHD remains unclear. This study aims to determine the clinical value of serum sodium in evaluating poor prognosis in patients with PH-LHD.

With the widespread use of bisphenol A (BPA) analogs, their health risks have attracted attention. The effects of maternal BPA analogs exposure on glucose homeostasis in adult offspring and the underlying fetal origins require further exploration. Herein, we exposed pregnant mice to two types of BPA analogs─BPB and BPAF; we evaluated glucose homeostasis in adult offspring and maternal-fetal glucose transport by testing intraperitoneal glucose tolerance, determining glucose and glycogen contents, conducting positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT), detecting expression of placental nutrient transport factors, and assessing placental barrier status.

Traditional environmental epidemiology has consistently focused on studying the impact of single exposures on specific health outcomes, considering concurrent exposures as variables to be controlled. However, with the continuous changes in environment, humans are increasingly facing more complex exposures to multi-pollutant mixtures. In this context, accurately assessing the impact of multi-pollutant mixtures on health has become a central concern in current environmental research.

Recently, there has been a growing interest in variable selection for causal inference within the context of high-dimensional data. However, when the outcome exhibits a skewed distribution, ensuring the accuracy of variable selection and causal effect estimation might be challenging. Here, we introduce the generalized median adaptive lasso (GMAL) for covariate selection to achieve an accurate estimation of causal effect even when the outcome follows skewed distributions.

Intrauterine adhesion (IUA) stands as a prevalent medical condition characterized by endometrial fibrosis and scar tissue formation within the uterine cavity, resulting in infertility and, in severe cases, recurrent miscarriages. Cell therapy, especially with stem cells, offers an alternative to surgery, but concerns about uncontrolled differentiation and tumorigenicity limit its use. Exosomes, more stable and immunogenicity-reduced than parent cells, have emerged as a promising avenue for IUA treatment.

Increasing evidence demonstrated that mitophagy and endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS) was closely associated with memory decline in elderly type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Tea polyphenols (TP), an excellent natural antioxidant, has been reported to have neuroprotective properties in aging and diabetes, but the underlying mechanisms are still not fully understood. This study targets ERS-mitophagy in hippocampal neurons to investigate the improvement effect of memory in aged T2DM rats by TP.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) can pass through the placental barrier and pose health risks to fetuses. However, exposure and transplacental transfer patterns of emerging PFAS remain unclear. Here, 24 PFAS were measured in paired maternal whole blood (n = 228), umbilical cord whole blood (n = 119) and serum (n = 120).
