Corneal complications associated with diabetes are gradually receiving attention because of the large number of patients with diabetes. The current treatment for diabetic corneal lesions relies on symptomatic relief, which has uncertain efficacy. Exploring the mechanisms underlying delayed corneal epithelial healing in diabetes is of great significance for the treatment of this disease.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate loose suture-related inflammation and activation of conjunctiva-associated lymphoid tissue (CALT) in patients after keratoplasty. The patients who were treated with keratoplasty at the First Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University between 2015 and 2022 were recruited into the study. We evaluated the time and location of loose suture development in patients after keratoplasty.

Corneal injury occurs frequently which may lead to serious visual impairment. Rapid and efficient re-epithelialization after corneal epithelial injury is the key issue for maintaining corneal homeostasis. Among various treatment strategies, microRNA (miR)-based therapy shows great potential.

Glaucoma is a group of neurodegenerative diseases characterized by loss of retinal ganglion cells and visual field defects and is one of the major causes of irreversible blindness worldwide. Primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) is one of the classifications of glaucoma. Oxidative stress in trabecular reticulated cells is one of the possible mechanisms of the development of glaucoma.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to summarize the misdiagnosis and treatment of corneal complications associated with suture exposure in cases of buried-suture double-eyelid blepharoplasty.
Methods: This study retrospectively analyzed 14 patients with palpebral conjunctival and corneal complications due to suture exposure after buried-suture double-eyelid blepharoplasty at the First Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University from January 2020 to July 2022. The patients' clinical symptoms included photophobia, lacrimation, pain, foreign body sensation, swelling of the eyelids, conjunctival hyperemia, secretion, etc.

Objective: Multiple studies have reported a potential contribution of human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) to the pathogenesis of type 1 diabetes and post-transplantation diabetes. However, the association between HCMV and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) remains unclear. In this paper, we employ the meta-analysis approach to investigate the potential correlation between HCMV infection and T2DM.

Purpose: This study aimed to explore the role of atorvastatin (ATO) in the prevention and treatment of the scarring of filtration channels after glaucoma surgery.
Methods: Human Tenon's capsule fibroblasts (HTFs) were co-cultured with various concentrations of ATO. First, Cell Counting Kit-8 assay was performed to evaluate the effects of various concentrations of ATO on the viability of HTFs.

Dry eye disease (DED) is an inflammatory disorder of the ocular surface seriously affecting the quality of life of patients. Topical dexamethasone (Dex) administration protects the cornea from the hyperosmotic stress (HS) induced by tears. Pyroptosis participates in the activation of epithelial inflammation during DED.

Metformin is the most widely used drug to treat type 2 diabetes and its mitochondrial activity is through activation of adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK). AMPK plays a dual regulatory role in mito-morphosis, controlling the phosphorylation and activation of dynamin-related protein 1 (DRP1) and mitofusin 2 (MFN2). The aim of this study was to investigate whether metformin could reduce early brain injury (EBI) after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) by activating mitophagy and improving mitochondrial morphology through AMPK.

Diabetes can cause microvessel impairment. However, these conjunctival pathological changes are not easily recognized, limiting their potential as independent diagnostic indicators. Therefore, we designed a deep learning model to explore the relationship between conjunctival features and diabetes, and to advance automated identification of diabetes through conjunctival images.

Purpose: Endothelial plaque is an important sign of fungal keratitis and is related to diagnosis, surgical indications, and prognosis. However, bacterial keratitis sometimes involves fibrin formation on the back corneal surface, similar to endothelial plaques. Because corneal infiltration interferes with precise observation of the posterior corneal plaque, distinguishing pathogens with a slitlamp is difficult.

Purpose: We aimed to evaluate activation of conjunctiva-associated lymphoid tissue (CALT) in patients with keratitis using in vivo confocal microscopy (IVCM) and conjunctival impression cytology (CIC).
Methods: In addition to anterior segment photography and corneal fluorescein staining, IVCM revealed the palpebral conjunctiva in all subjects, and CIC and immunofluorescence staining were performed.
Results: Diffuse lymphoid tissue cell density in the eyes of patients with keratitis was significantly greater compared with healthy volunteers (P < 0.

Purpose: Using retinal optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA), we aimed to investigate the changes in important indicators of cerebral microcirculatory disorders, such as the properties of the radial peripapillary capillaries, vascular complexes, and the retinal nerve fiber layer, caused by carotid stenosis and postoperative reperfusion.
Methods: In this prospective longitudinal cohort study, we recruited 40 carotid stenosis patients and 89 healthy volunteers in the First Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University (Harbin, China). Eyes with ipsilateral carotid stenosis constituted the experimental group, while the fellow eyes constituted the contralateral eye group.

Aim: To reveal the importance of gene screening for candidates with a family history of corneal disease or granular opacities in corneal stroma before refractive surgery.
Methods: A 37-year-old male (proband) underwent bilateral laser-assisted keratomileusis (LASIK) in 2002, with right vision decreased significantly in 2006. The proband and other 32 members of the family underwent a detailed ophthalmic examination, including vision acuity, intraocular pressure, slit-lamp photograph, fundus examination, optical coherence tomography (OCT) of cornea, and confocal microscope (IVCM) and peripheral blood was used for genomic DNA extraction.
