Introduction: EAST/SeSAME syndrome is an ultra-rare disease characterized by seizures, epilepsy, sensorineural deafness, ataxia, mental retardation, and electrolyte imbalance and arises due to deleterious variants disrupting the function of the KCNJ10 gene. In this study, we investigated the clinical symptoms and genetic cause of the disease in a 10-year-old Iranian girl who presented with neurological, hearing, and renal problems.

Methods: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), electroencephalography (EEG), and laboratory tests were performed to evaluate the clinical characteristics of the proband.

Background: With shared modes of transmission and clinical symptoms the convergence of COVID-19 and tuberculosis (TB) might lead to reduced diagnosis and detection of TB, which is challenging for healthcare systems already strained by the pandemic's reach.

Methods: This ecological study investigated the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on TB surveillance over the first 2 years of the pandemic (March 2020 to February 2022) in southeastern Iran. Interrupted Time Series (ITS) analysis with the quasi-Poisson regression models was used to estimate the relative risk (RR) of TB diagnosis and treatment outcome counts, stratified by gender, case definition, involvement type, and treatment outcomes.

Melatonin, a hormone primarily produced by the pineal gland, exhibits a range of physiological functions that extend beyond its well-known role in regulating circadian rhythms. This hormone influences energy metabolism, modulates insulin sensitivity, and plays a significant role in controlling sleep patterns and food intake. Notably, melatonin is also synthesized in various peripheral organs, including the gastrointestinal system and pancreas, suggesting its function as a local hormone.

The avian influenza A (H7N9) virus, which circulates in wild birds and poultry, has been a major concern for public health since it was first discovered in China in 2013 due to its demonstrated ability to infect humans, causing severe respiratory illness with high mortality rates. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), a total of 1568 human infections with 616 fatal cases caused by novel H7N9 viruses have been reported in China from early 2013 to January 2024. This manuscript provides a comprehensive review of the virology, evolutionary patterns, and pandemic potential of H7N9.

Moderate-intensity training can ameliorate the process of cardiac apoptosis induced by lithium drug consumption in male Wistar rats.

Toxicol Rep

December 2024

Department of Physiology and Pharmacology, Afzalipour School of Medicine, and Physiology Research Center, Institute of Neuropharmacology, Kerman University of Medical Sciences, Kerman, Iran.

Background And Objective: Lithium medication, given its significant role in the treatment or reduction of psychiatric disorders, may exert adverse effects on cardiac tissue. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effects of different exercise training intensities on the process of cardiac apoptosis and serum levels of cardiac troponin I (cTnI) resulting from lithium administration in male Wistar rats.

Methodology: In the present experimental study, 35 male Wistar rats were randomly divided into five groups (n=7); Control (CTL), Lithium (Li), High-Intensity training + lithium (HIT-Li), Moderate-Intensity training + lithium (MIT-Li), and Low-Intensity training + lithium (LIT-Li).
