Background: Even though the bitter gourd hybrids are shown to have significant heterosis for many of the economic traits, processes such as manual bagging and hand pollination make the hybrid seed production labour-intensive. Use of gynoecious line as female parent makes hybrid seed production more economical. This work was performed with the objective to identify the candidate gene based molecular markers for gynoecy in bitter gourd.

Activation of drought tolerant traits in crops: endophytes as elicitors.

Plant Signal Behav

December 2022

Department of Plant Physiology, Matthias Schleiden Institute of Genetics, Bioinformatics and Molecular, Botany, Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena, Jena, Germany.

Drought challenges crop production worldwide. The issue is aggravated by frequent drought episodes and unpredictable rainfall patterns associated with global climate change. While the efforts to breed drought-resistant crop varieties are progressing, the need of the hour is immediate strategies to sustain the yields of existing ones.

Unlabelled: A colorimetric closed-tube Loop mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assay was developed for rapid and sensitive detection of banana bunchy top virus (BBTV) from leaf and sucker tissues of infected banana plants. Six LAMP primers were designed targeting BBTV coat protein gene. Isothermal amplification was set at 65 °C and end point detection made by including hydroxy naphthol blue dye in the reaction where the positive samples showed colour change from violet to sky blue.

An elephant, being a mega herbivore, consumes large amounts of food. Due to the lack of availability of fodder inside the forest, the elephants move out of their habitat areas and also find agricultural crops attractive, which further results in man-animal conflict. To improve the elephant habitat area, the current study was conducted to assess the availability of native fodder grasses inside the Coimbatore Elephant Reserve, Western Ghats, from April 2021-April 2022.

(L.) Correa: An Underutilized Fruit with High Nutraceutical Values: A Review.

Int J Mol Sci

September 2022

Centro Tecnológico de la Carne de Galicia, Rúa Galicia N° 4, Parque Tecnológico de Galicia, San Cibrao das Viñas, 32900 Ourense, Spain.

(L.) Correa (Bael) fruit, a member of the Rutaceae family, is a major cultivated fruit plant in tropical and subtropical regions in countries of southeast Asia. Bael fruit has been a major topic for studies in recent years mainly due to its high nutritional (carbohydrates, proteins, minerals, and vitamins) value and presence of various phytochemicals, which attributed to its high medicinal value.

Stem cells are a well-known autologous pluripotent cell source, having excellent potential to develop into specialized cells, such as brain, skin, and bone marrow cells. The oral cavity is reported to be a rich source of multiple types of oral stem cells, including the dental pulp, mucosal soft tissues, periodontal ligament, and apical papilla. Oral stem cells were useful for both the regeneration of soft tissue components in the dental pulp and mineralized structure regeneration, such as bone or dentin, and can be a viable substitute for traditionally used bone marrow stem cells.

The effect of energetic neutral argon (EAr) atoms on the short and long-term retrogradation was studied, and the retrograded starch was used to prepare bioplastic films for better mechanical and barrier properties. Kithul starch showed higher short and long-term retrogradation after treatment. The EAr atoms treatment increased amylose content and amylose leaching; it facilitated the short-term retrogradation.

Indiscriminate, unhygienic and unscientific disposal of solid wastes poses significant risks leading to soil, water and air pollution. Abiotic and nonenzymatic rapid thermochemical processing technology provides a solution for the management of degradable solid waste at the source, converting it to organic digestate fertiliser within a day, thus overcoming the main drawback of the long time span required for composting. A study was performed to evaluate the maturity parameters and the extent of humification of the thermochemical digestate fertiliser and the raw biowaste substrate.

Two novel and rapid in vitro agar plate methods for simultaneous screening of two bacterial isolates for antagonism against multiple fungal phytopathogens in a single agar plate are described. In the modified plus streak method (MPS), in a 10 cm diameter PDA agar plate, two different bacterial isolates were screened against four fungal pathogens. The second method used 20 cm diameter PDA agar plate surface and was termed as the parallel multiple streak (PMS) method.

Apitherapy and Periodontal Disease: Insights into In Vitro, In Vivo, and Clinical Studies.

Antioxidants (Basel)

April 2022

Clinic for Conservative Dentistry and Periodontology, School of Dental Medicine, Christian-Albrecht's University, 24105 Kiel, Germany.

Periodontal diseases are caused mainly by inflammation of the gums and bones surrounding the teeth or by dysbiosis of the oral microbiome, and the Global Burden of Disease study (2019) reported that periodontal disease affects 20-50% of the global population. In recent years, more preference has been given to natural therapies compared to synthetic drugs in the treatment of periodontal disease, and several oral care products, such as toothpaste, mouthwash, and dentifrices, have been developed comprising honeybee products, such as propolis, honey, royal jelly, and purified bee venom. In this study, we systematically reviewed the literature on the treatment of periodontitis using honeybee products.

Multiple Stressors in Vegetable Production: Insights for Trait-Based Crop Improvement in Cucurbits.

Front Plant Sci

May 2022

Department of Vegetable Science, College of Agriculture Vellanikkara, Kerala Agricultural University, Thrissur, India.

Vegetable production is a key determinant of contribution from the agricultural sector toward national Gross Domestic Product in a country like India, the second largest producer of fresh vegetables in the world. This calls for a careful scrutiny of the threats to vegetable farming in the event of climate extremes, environmental degradation and incidence of plant pests/diseases. Cucurbits are a vast group of vegetables grown almost throughout the world, which contribute to the daily diet on a global scale.

Thermal processing is the most efficient and economical technique for the long-term preservation of tender jackfruit in ready-to-cook form on a commercial-scale. Although, thermal processing primarily focus on microbiological safety of the product, the associated quality changes need to be examined as it is decisive of consumer acceptance. The present study investigated the effect of two pasteurization (90 and 100 °C) and sterilization temperatures (110 and 121 °C) at different lethality on microbiological, colour, texture, ascorbic acid (AA), total flavonoid (TFC) and phenol (TPC) contents of tender jackfruit processed in tin-free-steel (TFS) cans.

Scarcity of functional genetic markers associated with candidate genes (CGs) is a serious constraint for marker-assisted selection in the natural rubber producing tree, Hevea brasiliensis. In order to develop markers associated with rubber yield, five CGs involved in latex biosynthesis were characterized from 16 popular Hevea varieties. Novel SNPs and indels were identified and developed into markers using simple genotyping techniques like allele-specific PCR, CAPS, etc.
