Predictors of 7-day mortality in critically ill patients with hyperglycemic crisis : A single center retrospective analysis.

Aim/hypothesis: The main aim of the study was to identify point of care available laboratory and clinical predictors of 7‑day mortality in critically ill patients with a hyperglycemic crisis.

Methods: A retrospective study of 990 patients with the first hospitalization due to hyperglycemia was performed. Patients were classified as having diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) or being in a hyperosmolar hyperglycemic state (HHS) according to the recommendations of the American Diabetes Association (ADA).

Aim: Addressing the global nursing shortage is crucial to both national and international public health efforts. This paper aims to highlight the importance of resilience and its impact on primary care nurses' job satisfaction and intentions to quit, especially in the face of current challenges.

Methods: The study utilized a mixed methods design involving nurses in intensive care units of a university hospital in Austria.

Instrumental activities of daily living in neuro-oncology: International validation of the EORTC IADL-BN32 questionnaire.

Background: Neurocognitive impairments are common in patients with a brain tumour, and may negatively impact on functioning in daily life, particularly on instrumental activities of daily living (IADL). The EORTC IADL-BN32 questionnaire was developed to measure IADL in this patient population.

Methods: In this international validation study, we evaluated the EORTC IADL-BN32 questionnaire on several psychometric properties in a large sample of patients with a primary or metastatic brain tumour.

Prediction of plasma sodium changes in the acutely ill patients: the potential role of tissue sodium content.

Background: Rapid correction of dysnatremias can result in neurological complications. Therefore, various formulas are available to predict changes in plasma sodium concentration ([Na]) after treatment, but these have been shown to be inaccurate. This could be explained by sodium acumulation in skin and muscle tissue, which is not explicitly considered in these formulas.

Severe hypocalcemia in the emergency department: a retrospective cohort study of prevalence, etiology, treatment and outcome.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of severe hypocalcemia in patients attending the emergency department. Symptoms, causes, treatment, and outcome of severe hypocalcemia as well as course of calcium concentrations were assessed. This retrospective case series included all adult patients with measurements of serum calcium concentrations presenting to the emergency department of the Bürgerspital Solothurn between January 01 in 2017 and December 31 in 2020.

Three-year follow-up analysis of the short-stitch versus long-stitch technique for elective midline abdominal closure randomized-controlled (ESTOIH) trial.

Background: Clinical trials have shown reduced incisional hernia rates 1 year after elective median laparotomy closure using a short-stitch technique. With hernia development continuing beyond the first postoperative year, we aimed to compare incisional hernias 3 years after midline closure using short or long stitches in patients from the ESTOIH trial.

Methods: The ESTOIH trial was a prospective, multicenter, parallel-group, double-blind, randomized-controlled study of primary elective midline closure.

[Consensus recommendations on the diagnosis and treatment of hyponatremia from the Austrian Society for Nephrology 2024].

Hyponatremia is a disorder of water homeostasis. Water balance is maintained by the collaboration of renal function and cerebral structures, which regulate thirst mechanisms and secretion of the antidiuretic hormone. Measurement of serum-osmolality, urine osmolality and urine-sodium concentration help to diagnose the different reasons for hyponatremia.

[Interaction of somatic findings and psychiatric symptoms in COVID-19. A scoping review].

An infection with SARS-CoV‑2 can affect the central nervous system, leading to neurological as well as psychiatric symptoms. In this respect, mechanisms of inflammation seem to be of much greater importance than the virus itself. This paper deals with the possible contributions of organic changes to psychiatric symptomatology and deals especially with delirium, cognitive symptoms, depression, anxiety, posttraumatic stress disorder and psychosis.

[Use of subcutaneous Vedolizumab: A position paper issued by the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Working Group of the Austrian Society of Gastroenterology and Hepatology (ÖGGH)].

The humanized monoclonal anti-α4β7-integrin-antibody vedolizumab is one of several biologic therapeutic options in moderate-to-severe ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. Within the VISIBLE trial program, a novel subcutaneous application route was evaluated in addition to the already established intravenous form. In this position statement, the working group "Inflammatory Bowel Diseases" of the Austrian Society for Gastroenterology and Hepatology (OEGGH) summarizes the evidence regarding the subcutaneous application of vedolizumab.

[S1 guidelines for the management of postviral conditions using the example of post-COVID-19].

These S1 guidelines are an updated and expanded version of the S1 guidelines on long COVID differential diagnostic and management strategies. They summarize the state of knowledge on postviral conditions like long/post COVID at the time of writing. Due to the dynamic nature of knowledge development, they are intended to be "living guidelines".

Crossover Patient Outcomes for Targeted Lung Denervation in Moderate to Severe Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: AIRFLOW-2.

Background: Targeted Lung Denervation (TLD) is a potential new therapy for COPD. Radiofrequency energy is bronchoscopically delivered to the airways to disrupt pulmonary parasympathetic nerves, to reduce bronchoconstriction, mucus hypersecretion, and bronchial hyperreactivity.

Objectives: This work assesses the effect of TLD on COPD exacerbations (AECOPD) in crossover subjects in the AIRFLOW-2 trial.

Effects of the short stitch technique for midline abdominal closure on incisional hernia (ESTOIH): randomized clinical trial.

Background: Incisional hernia remains a frequent problem after midline laparotomy. This study compared a short stitch to standard loop closure using an ultra-long-term absorbent elastic suture material.

Methods: A prospective, multicentre, parallel-group, double-blind, randomized, controlled superiority trial was designed for the elective setting.

Bowel function and associated risk factors at preschool and early childhood age in children with anorectal malformation type rectovestibular fistula: An ARM-Net consortium study.

Background: Outcome of patients operated for anorectal malformation (ARM) type rectovestibular fistula (RVF) is generally considered to be good. However, large multi-center studies are scarce, mostly describing pooled outcome of different ARM-types, in adult patients. Therefore, counseling parents concerning the bowel function at early age is challenging.

Background And Purpose: Despite the increasing number of reports on the spectrum of neurological manifestations of COVID-19 (neuro-COVID), few studies have assessed short- and long-term outcome of the disease.

Methods: This is a cohort study enrolling adult patients with neuro-COVID seen in neurological consultation. Data were collected prospectively or retrospectively in the European Academy of Neurology NEuro-covid ReGistrY ((ENERGY).

NAVIGATE 24-Month Results: Electromagnetic Navigation Bronchoscopy for Pulmonary Lesions at 37 Centers in Europe and the United States.

Introduction: Electromagnetic navigation bronchoscopy (ENB) is a minimally invasive, image-guided approach to access lung lesions for biopsy or localization for treatment. However, no studies have reported prospective 24-month follow-up from a large, multinational, generalizable cohort. This study evaluated ENB safety, diagnostic yield, and usage patterns in an unrestricted, real-world observational design.

Postoperative chemoradiotherapy with cisplatin is superior to radioimmunotherapy with cetuximab and radiotherapy alone : Analysis of the Austrian head and neck cancer registry of the AGMT.

Background: The addition of cisplatin or cetuximab to radiotherapy in patients with locally advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (SCCHN) has significantly improved the outcome. While the superiority of cisplatin over cetuximab in combination with radiotherapy has been shown in a definitive setting, we set out to compare postoperative chemoradiotherapy with cisplatin to radioimmunotherapy with cetuximab and radiotherapy alone within the Austrian head and neck cancer registry of the Working Group on Pharmaceutical Tumor Treatment (AGMT) study group.

Material And Methods: In the AGMT head and neck cancer registry, data of 557 patients with SCCHN from five Austrian cancer centers were prospectively collected between 2012 and 2017.

Combined standard bypass and parent artery occlusion for management of giant and complex internal carotid artery aneurysms.

Background: Complex aneurysms do not have a standard protocol for treatment. In this study, we investigate the safety and efficacy of microsurgical revascularization combined with parent artery occlusion (PAO) in giant and complex internal carotid artery (ICA) aneurysms.

Methods: Between 1998 and 2017, 41 patients with 47 giant and complex ICA aneurysms were treated by an a priori planned combined treatment strategy.

[Neuropsychiatric Aspects of COVID-19 - A Narrative Overview].
