Oropouche virus (OROV) is an emerging arbovirus endemic in Latin America and the Caribbean that causes Oropouche fever, a febrile illness that clinically resembles some other arboviral infections. It is currently spreading through Brazil and surrounding countries, where, from 1 January to 1 August 2024, more than 8000 cases have been identified in Bolivia, Brazil, Columbia, and Peru and for the first time in Cuba. Precipitation variations in the tropical Indian Ocean region result from changes in the Indian Summer Monsoon (ISM), as well as convective and cyclonic rainfall. The relative roles of such forcing can be elucidated by constructing robust paleoclimate records, which help to better predict future variability in precipitation due to rising greenhouse gases. Although it is clear that the bioenergetic basis of skeletal muscle fatigue (transient decrease in peak torque or power in response to contraction) involves intramyocellular acidosis (decreased pH) and accumulation of inorganic phosphate (Pi) in response to the increased energy demand of contractions, the effects of old age on the build-up of these metabolites has not been evaluated systematically. A critical review of the current state-of-the-science for the physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) modeling of metal nanoparticles and their application to human health risk assessment for inhalation exposures was conducted. A systematic literature search was used to identify four model groups (defined as a primary publication along with multiple supplementary publications) subject to review. Using a recent guideline document from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) for PBPK model evaluation, these model groups were critically peer-reviewed by an independent panel of experts to identify those to be considered for modeling and simulation application.

Health mindsets refer to beliefs about the malleability (growth mindset) versus stability (fixed mindset) of physical health and have gained traction as a predictor of health beliefs and behaviors. Across two studies, we tested whether health mindsets were associated with avoiding personalized health risk information. In Study 2, we also tested whether conceptually-related constructs of internal and chance health locus of control, health self-efficacy, fatalism, and genetic determinism were associated with information avoidance.

Suspended sediment is a critical water quality parameter and an indicator of geomorphic processes, but suspended sediment dynamics in urban streams may not conform to the first-flush model widely used for other pollutants. We analyzed discharge and turbidity data for 367 events from three urban watersheds (impervious cover 16-45%) in Cleveland, Ohio (USA). Less intensely urbanized watersheds exhibit higher turbidity compared to that of the most highly urbanized watershed.

Lipid redistribution due to a cell-cell fusion pore.

We consider the redistribution of lipids comprising the plasma membranes during cell-cell fusion, particularly due to the presence of a fusion pore. Assuming the membranes are of constant thickness, we find that the mole fraction of cholesterol increases in the directly apposed exoplasmic leaflets, and is decreased in the cytoplasmic leaflets. The redistribution of the phospholipids is obtained as well.
