We investigated how long-term visual experience with habitual spherical aberration (SA) influences subjective depth of focus (DoF). Nine healthy cycloplegic eyes with habitual SAs of different signs and magnitudes were enrolled. An adaptive optics (AO) visual simulator was used to measure through-focus high-contrast visual acuity after correcting all monochromatic aberrations and imposing + 0.

Backgruound: Liver fibrosis is a common outcome of chronic liver disease and is primarily driven by hepatic stellate cell (HSC) activation. Irisin, a myokine released during physical exercise, is beneficial for metabolic disorders and mitochondrial dysfunction. This study aimed to explore the effects of irisin on liver fibrosis in HSCs, a bile duct ligation (BDL) mouse model, and the associated mitochondrial dysfunction.

Medicine (Baltimore)

October 2024

Department of Biochemistry, School of Medicine, Catholic University of Daegu, Daegu, Republic of Korea.

Backgrounds: Renal tubular injury caused by oxidative stress and inflammation results in acute kidney injury. Recent research reported that antibiotics may protect renal tubules from progressive deterioration, but the underlying mechanism remains unclear. Therefore, we investigated the efficacy and mechanism of action of antibiotics against renal tubular injury.

December 2024

Department of Rheumatology, Uijeongbu Eulji Medical Center, Eulji University School of Medicine, Uijeongbu, Republic of Korea; Eulji Rheumatology Research Institute, Eulji University, Uijeongbu, Republic of Korea. Electronic address:

Background: Complement Factor H-Related protein 5 (CFHR5) belongs to the factor H/CFHR family and regulates the complement system by modulating factor H's inhibitory activity against C3b. Despite its known role, the impact of CFHR5 on autoimmune arthritis and its relationship to pathophysiological changes in arthritis and bone loss remain unclear. This study aimed to assess the effect of CFHR5 on aggressive osteoclast activity and arthritis using a murine model of collagen antibody-induced arthritis (CAIA).

: The association between neurological disability, prognosis, and telomere length (TL) in patients with stroke has been investigated in various ways. However, analysis of the type of stroke and ischemic stroke subgroups is limited. In this study, we aimed to determine the association between TL and neurological disability according to stroke type.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focused on creating a machine learning model to predict pulmonary embolism (PE) in patients with gastrointestinal cancers, who are at a higher risk for this condition.
  • Researchers analyzed data from 585 patients who had undergone computed tomographic pulmonary angiography (CTPA) across two hospitals, using factors like the Wells score and D-dimer levels to train the model.
  • The model demonstrated effectiveness by achieving an area under the receiver operating curve (AUROC) of 0.736 in one hospital and 0.669 in another, showing that it could significantly reduce unnecessary CTPA referrals compared to traditional diagnostic methods.

Periodontitis is associated with elevated C-reactive protein (CRP) levels. Although the coexistence of periodontitis and elevated CRP levels may heighten the risk of mortality, previous studies have not confirmed their synergistic effect. Understanding this interaction is crucial for identifying potential interventions to reduce mortality risk in individuals with periodontitis.

Background/objectives: Sarcopenia has known negative effects on clinical and oncological outcomes in patients with colorectal cancer (CRC). The use of the Strength, Assistance in walking, Rise from a chair, Climb stairs, and Falls (SARC-F) questionnaire to determine the effects of sarcopenia on postoperative complications of CRC has not been reported to date. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the relationship of SARC-F score with clinicopathologic outcomes after CRC surgery.

  • UBXN6 is a crucial cofactor for p97, involved in various cellular activities, and its role in the innate immune system is not well understood.
  • In sepsis patients, UBXN6 levels increase and are linked to lower inflammatory gene activity while promoting autophagy through Forkhead box O3 expression.
  • In experiments with mice, lack of UBXN6 in macrophages led to worse inflammation and metabolic changes, indicating UBXN6's importance in regulating immune responses and maintaining proper cellular function during sepsis.

The Korean Organ Transplant Registry (KOTRY): Third Official Adult Heart Transplant Report.

Korean Circ J

October 2024

Division of Cardiology, Department of Internal Medicine, Asan Medical Center, University of Ulsan College of Medicine, Seoul, Korea.

Background And Objectives: The Korean Organ Transplant Registry (KOTRY) provided data for this third official report on adult heart transplantation (HT), including information from 709 recipients.

Methods: Data from HTs performed at seven major centers in Korea between March 2014 and December 2020 were analyzed, focusing on immunosuppression, acute rejection, cardiac allograft vasculopathy (CAV), post-transplant survival, and mechanical circulatory support (MCS) usage.

Results: The median ages of the recipients and donors were 56.

Upper airway comorbidities of asthma.

J Allergy Clin Immunol

December 2024

Division of Allergy-Immunology, Department of Internal Medicine, Morsani College of Medicine, University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine, Tampa, Fla. Electronic address:

Asthma, characterized as a chronic heterogeneous airway disease, often presents with common comorbid conditions. The concept of "one airway, one disease" was coined more than 20 years ago, emphasizing the connection between asthma and upper airway comorbidities (UACs) such as allergic or nonallergic rhinitis, chronic rhinosinusitis with or without nasal polyps, and aspirin/nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug-exacerbated respiratory disease. Since then, numerous studies have demonstrated that UACs are closely related and affect asthma phenotypes.

Background And Aims: Polypectomy is a procedure associated with a high risk of bleeding. Guidelines recommend uninterrupted aspirin use during polypectomy, whereas cessation of clopidogrel 5 to 7 days before polypectomy is recommended. The cold snare resection (CSR) technique, with or without submucosal injection, is considered safer than conventional polypectomy using electrocoagulation for postpolypectomy bleeding.

Phthalates are chemical risk factors of chronic kidney disease (CKD); however, little is known about temporal trends of phthalate exposure and associated health risks among CKD patients. Such information is even scarce for alternative plasticizers. CKD patients were recruited from 2011 to 2020 in Korea ( = 200) and assessed for the temporal changes of both traditional and alternative plasticizer exposure.

Background: Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (IHCC) is highly aggressive primary hepatic malignancy with an increasing incidence.

Objective: This study aimed to develop machine learning-based radiomic clustering using F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) for predicting recurrence-free survival (RFS) and overall survival (OS) in IHCC.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed pretreatment F-18 FDG PET/CT scans of 60 IHCC patients who underwent surgery without neoadjuvant treatment between January 2008 and July 2020.

  • A study was conducted to explore Korean clinicians' knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to using neuromodulators and psychiatric treatments for functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs).
  • The survey included 451 clinicians from various hospital tiers, revealing that while a high percentage recognized the need for these treatments, many were unfamiliar with prescribing neuromodulators and referred few patients for psychiatric care.
  • Results indicated a significant gap in knowledge and prescribing practices between primary care clinicians and gastroenterologists, highlighting the need for further education on this topic.
