Refractory hypoglycaemia in a patient with a solitary fibrous tumour (SFT) is very rare and was first reported in 1930 independently by Doege and Potter, leading to it being named 'Doege-Potter syndrome'. Here, we report the unusual case of a 77-year-old woman with a giant solitary fibrous pleural tumour who presented with complicating pulmonary hypertension and associated heart failure with hypoglycaemia, and subsequently underwent curative resection of the pleural mass with clinical improvement.

Background And Aim: The impact of 17β-estradiol plus norethisterone acetate administration on serum lipids in women is controversial as previously published studies have produced conflicting results. Thus, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to investigate the effects of 17β-estradiol plus norethisterone acetate therapy on total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) in females.

Methods: We searched the PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Embase, and Web of Science databases for relevant trials published in English until 15 July 2021.

Background And Aim: Oxidative stress is involved in the development of chronic diseases. It has been suggested that melatonin has a protective role against oxidative stress by activation of antioxidant enzymes and scavenging free-radicals. Present study aimed to investigate the effect of melatonin supplementation on oxidative stress and antioxidant biomarkers such as malondialdehyde (MDA), increased total antioxidant capacity (TAC), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and Glutathione peroxidase (GPx).

Background And Aim: The exact effect of vitamin D administration on the lipid profile in postmenopausal women is unknown. However, as dyslipidemia is a recognized risk factor for coronary heart disease (CHD) in this population, the lipid-lowering effects of vitamin D need to be explored Thus, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that evaluated the impact of vitamin D use on triglycerides (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and total cholesterol (TC) as a risk factor for coronary heart disease (CHD) in postmenopausal women.

Methods: We developed a search strategy for multiple databases (PubMed/Medline, Scopus, Embase, and Web of Science) to identify relevant RCTs whose results were published until June 1st, 2021.

Potential of the common facial vein as a recipient vein in free flap reconstruction.

Clin Anat

November 2021

Keele Medical School Anatomy Department, Keele University, Keele, Staffordshire, UK.

Recipient vessel selection for free flap reconstruction depends on numerous factors and may be limited due to previous treatment. Currently, little evidence is available regarding the anatomy and reconstructive potential of the common facial vein (CFV), a tributary of the internal jugular vein (IJV). The aim of this project was to determine the diameter of the CFV at various points along its course and identify suitable landmarks to locate the CFV, to consider the vessel as a potential recipient vein in free flap reconstruction.

Emerging evidence indicates that a strong relationship exists between brain regenerative therapies and nutrition. Early life nutrition plays an important role during embryonic brain development, and there are clear consequences to an imbalance in nutritional factors on both the production and survival of mature neuronal populations and the infant's risk of diseases in later life. Our research and that of others suggest that vitamins play a fundamental role in the formation of neurons and their survival.
