Background: Impaired cardiac function is associated with cognitive impairment and brain imaging features of aging. Cardiac arrhythmias, including atrial fibrillation, are implicated in clinical and subclinical brain injuries. Even in the absence of a clinical diagnosis, subclinical or prodromal substrates of arrhythmias, including an abnormally long or short P-wave duration (PWD), a measure associated with atrial abnormalities, have been associated with stroke and cognitive decline.

Background: Electronic cigarettes have gained popularity as a nicotine delivery system, which has been recommended by some as an aid to help people quit traditional smoking. The potential long-term effects of vaping on the cardiovascular system, as well as how their effects compare with those from standard cigarettes, are not well understood. The intrinsic frequency (IF) method is a systems approach for analysis of left ventricle and arterial function.

Article Synopsis
  • Echogenicity of the carotid arterial wall, indicated by IM-GSM values, is a new marker for subclinical atherosclerosis, where lower values suggest more lipid buildup; our study tracked these values from childhood into adulthood.
  • In our research involving 240 participants, IM-GSM decreased significantly from an average of 108.2 in childhood to 75.6 in adulthood, with various factors such as weight, blood pressure, and parental education influencing these levels.
  • The study concludes that a decrease in IM-GSM with age highlights the importance of maintaining a healthy weight and blood pressure in children to possibly prevent future atherosclerosis.

Background: We aimed to investigate the association of characteristics of lenticulostriate artery (LSA) morphology and parental atheromatous disease (PAD) with single subcortical infarction (SSI) and to explore whether the LSA morphology is correlated with proximal plaque features in asymptomatic PAD.

Methods And Results: Patients with acute SSI were prospectively enrolled and classified as large- and small-SSI groups. The clinical data and imaging features of LSA morphology (branches, length, dilation, and tortuosity) and middle cerebral artery plaques (normalized wall index, remodeling index, enhancement degree, and hyperintense plaques) were evaluated.

Article Synopsis
  • A study called MADRES focused on low-income Hispanic/Latina women in Los Angeles to explore how diet during pregnancy may help prevent hypertensive disorders, which affect this group more than others.
  • Researchers analyzed participants' diets in their third trimester and reviewed medical records for incidences of gestational hypertension and preeclampsia.
  • Results suggested that a diet high in solid fats, refined grains, and cheese increased the risk of hypertensive disorders, while a diet rich in vegetables, oils, and fruits appeared to lower the risk, especially in overweight women.

Article Synopsis
  • This study explored how perceived stress from childhood to adulthood impacts cardiometabolic health in young adults, using data from 276 participants.
  • Participants were categorized based on their stress patterns—consistently high, decreasing, increasing, and consistently low—assessing their heart health and risk factors.
  • Findings indicated that higher stress levels were linked to greater cardiometabolic risks, with those experiencing consistently high stress being at the highest risk for obesity and other health issues in adulthood.

Background Persistent sensorimotor impairments after stroke can negatively impact quality of life. The hippocampus is vulnerable to poststroke secondary degeneration and is involved in sensorimotor behavior but has not been widely studied within the context of poststroke upper-limb sensorimotor impairment. We investigated associations between non-lesioned hippocampal volume and upper limb sensorimotor impairment in people with chronic stroke, hypothesizing that smaller ipsilesional hippocampal volumes would be associated with greater sensorimotor impairment.

Under current United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) policy, patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) levels ≥1000 ng/mL are required to show a reduction in AFP level to <500 ng/mL before liver transplantation (LT). However, effects of AFP reduction on post-LT HCC outcomes among patients with HCC with moderately elevated AFP levels between 100 and <1000 ng/mL are unclear. Adults in the UNOS registry who underwent LTs from January 2005 to September 2015 with initial AFP levels of 100 to 999 ng/mL at listing for Model for End-Stage Liver Disease exceptions were included.

While the spatial resolution of exposure surfaces has greatly improved, our ability to locate people in space remains a limiting factor in accurate exposure assessment. In this case-control study, two approaches to geocoding participant locations were used to study the impact of geocoding uncertainty on the estimation of ambient pesticide exposure and breast cancer risk among women living in California's Central Valley. Residential and occupational histories were collected and geocoded using a traditional point-based method along with a novel area-based method.

E-cigarette or vaping product use-associated lung injury was recognized in the United States in the summer of 2019 and is typified by acute respiratory distress, shortness of breath, chest pain, cough, and fever, associated with vaping. It can mimic many of the manifestations of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Some investigators have suggested that E-cigarette or vaping product use-associated lung injury was due to tetrahydrocannabinol or vitamin E acetate oil mixed with the electronic cigarette liquid.
