Behcet's disease and cardiovascular involvement: our experience of asymptomatic Behcet's patients.

Behcet's syndrome is a systemic inflammatory disease associated with vasculitis, and arterial, venous and cardiac disorders. Thirty-eight Behcet's disease patients were examined prospectively with echocardiography, ultrasonography and computed tomography, and coagulation parameters were determined. Deep venous insufficiency was found in 16 patients, venous thrombosis in seven, one patient had iliac artery stenosis, three had carotid arterial intimal proliferation, two patients had aortic annulus dilatation, six had aortic valve insufficiency, and three had mitral valve insufficiency.

Early Gastric Cancer: A Demonstrative Case Report.

With early detection of gastric cancer, mortality from gastric cancer has decreased. Endoscopists should be more suspicious about these lesions because these can be easily neglected. We reported a case which has endoscopic appearance of benign lesion but possessed malignant histological features.

A segmental neurofibromatosis case with eruptive seborrheic keratoses.

Segmental neurofibromatosis (SNF) is a rare variant of neurofibromatosis (NF) type 1 characterized by a restricted distribution of cafe-au-lait macules, and/or neurofibromas, and rarely freckling to a single dermatomal segment. Patients with NF type 1 have an associated increased risk for benign or malignant tumours. The prevalence of typical NF type 1 complications including malignancies in SNF is much lower than the generalized form.

Epidemiological patterns of perniosis, and its association with systemic disorder.

Background: There are few studies exploring the epidemiological properties of perniosis (chilblains) and its association with systemic disorders.

Aim: To collect epidemiological data for perniosis, to investigate any association with systemic disorders, and to identify markers for the differential diagnosis of idiopathic and secondary perniosis.

Methods: This was a prospective study of 51 patients with perniosis [female : male ratio 2.

Evaluation of shoulder and elbow functions after treatment of humeral shaft fractures: a 20-132-month follow-up study.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the long-term results of shoulder and elbow functions in humeral shaft fractures treated with functional brace, plate and screw osteosynthesis or intramedullary nailing.

Methods: The study included 128 patients treated for humeral shaft fracture. The patients were divided into three groups according to treatment method: Group 1 (n=62) received functional brace, Group 2 (n=36) plate and screw osteosynthesis and Group 3 (n=30) intramedullary nailing.

Serum holotranscobalamine, vitamin B12, folic acid and homocysteine levels in alopecia areata patients.

Alopecia areata has been associated with many autoimmune diseases. There is a common belief that the prevalence of pernicious anemia is increased in patients with alopecia areata. In this study, we sought to investigate vitamin B12, folate and homocysteine metabolism in alopecia areata.

Nail discoloration due to tinzaparin sodium.

Tinzaparin sodium is a low molecular weight heparin formed by the enzymatic degradation of porcine unfractionated heparin, and is effective in the prevention and treatment of thromboembolic disease. We report a 31-year-old female patient with a history of recurrent pregnancy loss due to thrombophilia, who developed nail discoloration after 8 weeks of tinzaparin sodium therapy. No other pigmentation was found elsewhere on the skin, mucous membranes, teeth, or sclerae.

Right common iliac artery stenosis and stent insertion in Behçet's disease.

Behçet's disease is a multisystem inflammatory disorder that is classified among the vasculitides and can affect all types and sizes of blood vessels. Vascular manifestations of Behçet's disease are venous and arterial occlusion, and arterial aneurysms. As vasculitis of the vasa vasorum is the main pathological hallmark of Behçet's disease, it is generally seen as superficial thrombo-phlebitis or occlusion of the major veins; however arterial obstruction and aneurysms may also be seen to a lesser extent.

The effect of oral isotretinoin (13-cis retinoic acid) on hearing systems in patients with acne vulgaris: a prospective study.

Isotretinoin is widely used in the treatment of extensive and nodulocystic acne. The objective of this prospective study was to investigate whether oral isotretinoin could affect the hearing system. Thirty-eight patients with acne vulgaris (76 ears) who were diagnosed and treated at the Department of Dermatology were included in the current study.

Isotretinoin is an effective therapy for severe nodulocystic acne. Several experimental studies suggest that it may have an effect on vitamin D physiology. In the present study, the authors aimed to investigate the effect of isotretinoin treatment on the metabolism of vitamin D in acne patients.

Allergic rhinitis (AR) in geriatric patients.

Allergic rhinitis (AR) can be defined as an inflammatory disease of the nose and the paranasal sinuses, characterized by a specific IgE-mediated hypersensitivity reaction. The aim of this study was to evaluate the correlation between the symptoms of AR and the prick test results in geriatric patients presenting with symptoms of AR by comparing these with those of a young control group. Thirty-two geriatric patients (Group 1) were analyzed retrospectively, and 37 patients (Group 2) were selected as the control group.

Isotretinoin does not induce insulin resistance in patients with acne.

Background: Isotretinoin treatment causes hypertriglyceridaemia. Insulin resistance is also associated with hypertriglyceridaemia. It is not known if isotretinoin is related to insulin resistance.

The association between serum uric acid level and coronary artery disease.

Objective: This study was designed to determine the relationship between serum uric acid level and the presence and severity of coronary artery disease (CAD).

Methods: A total of 1012 patients who underwent coronary angiography were included in this study. All patients were assessed for the presence of cardiovascular risk factors and ongoing medications.

Evaluation of the relationship between atrial septal aneurysm and cardiac arrhythmias via P-wave dispersion and signal-averaged P-wave duration.

Objective: The aim of the study was to investigate the relationship between atrial septal aneurysms (ASAs) and cardiac arrhythmias via signal-averaged P-wave duration (SAPWD) and P-wave dispersion (Pd).

Methods: Sixty-six patients with ASA served as the study group (group 1; 28 men and 38 women; mean age, 34 +/- 10 years) and 62 healthy volunteers served as the control group (group 2; 29 men and 33 women; mean age, 31 +/- 8 years) in the current study. ASAs were diagnosed by transthoracic echocardiography based on the criteria of a minimal aneurysmal base of > or =15 mm; and an excursion of > or =10 mm.

Hepatic artery resistance in children with obesity and fatty liver.

Objective: The present study assessed whether there is a correlation between hepatic artery resistive index (HARI) and increase of body mass index and hepatosteatosis grading in children with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) reflecting hemodynamic effects of hepatosteatosis.

Aspirin resistance is associated with glycemic control, the dose of aspirin, and obesity in type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Objective: Aspirin resistance (AR) is increased in diabetic patients. It is not known whether glycemic control has effect on AR.

Design: To test the hypothesis that glycemic control might have influence on aspirin resistance, we measured aspirin resistance and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) in diabetic patients.
