Pre-clinical studies have indicated that mitoprotective drugs may add cardioprotection beyond rapid revascularization, antiplatelet therapy and risk modification. We review the clinical efficacy of mitoprotective drugs that have progressed to clinical testing comprising cyclosporine A, KAI-9803, MTP131 and TRO 40303. Whereas cyclosporine may reduce infarct size in patients undergoing primary angioplasty as evaluated by release of myocardial ischaemic biomarkers and infarct size imaging, the other drugs were not capable of demonstrating this effect in the clinical setting.

Deregulation of receptor tyrosine kinase (RTK)-signaling is frequently observed in many human malignancies, making activated RTKs the promising therapeutic targets. In particular, activated RTK-signaling has a strong impact on tumor resistance to various DNA damaging agents, e.g.

The association between chronic inflammatory diseases (CIDs) and increased cardiovascular (CV) risk is well documented and can be a most threatening complication in these patients. However, the pathogenetic mechanisms underlying increased CV risk remain elusive, especially in their cellular and biochemical pathways. Using animal models to understand mechanisms underlying cardiac involvement are limited.

An adequate experimental model is important to understand pathophysiological processes ongoing in the pancreas with diabetes mellitus. Our study was aimed to describe early ultra- and microstructural changes in the rat pancreas in 12-48 h after alloxan administration in a dose of 180 mg/kg. A histopathological examination of the endocrine pancreas revealed the loss of borders between endocrine cells, granular dystrophy and degranulation, sings of necrosis in central cells of the Langerhans islets and apoptosis of their peripheral ones manifested as DNA fragmentation and an increased expression of apoptosis markers.

Oligosaccharins, which are biologically active oligosaccharide fragments of cell wall polysaccharides, may regulate the processes of growth and development as well as the response to stress factors. We characterized the effect of the oligosaccharin that stimulates rhizogenesis (OSRG) on the gene expression profile in the course of IAA-induced formation of adventitious roots in hypocotyl explants of buckwheat ( Moench.).

Under current conditions, the scientific request for the study of both internal and external factors of socio-psychological safety becomes important. In the literature there are very contradictory data on the role of contextual factors in ensuring the socio-psychological safety of schools. In our work, we consider the role of socio-economic and geographical conditions in ensuring the socio-psychological safety of the educational environment of the school from the standpoint of environmental psychology.

Telomeres cap the physical ends of eukaryotic chromosomes to ensure complete DNA replication and genome stability. Heritable natural variation in telomere length exists in yeast, mice, plants and humans at birth; however, major effect loci underlying such polymorphism remain elusive. Here, we employ quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping and transgenic manipulations to identify genes controlling telomere length set point in a multi-parent Arabidopsis thaliana mapping population.

New octahedral rhenium cluster complexes [{ReQ}(SO)] (Q = S or Se) were synthesized starting from [{ReQ}(HO)(OH)]·12HO. The complexes were crystallized as sodium salts and characterized by X-ray single-crystal diffraction and elemental analyses, IR, UV/vis and luminescence spectroscopies. Magnetic relaxation data demonstrate the complex formation of the cluster units with gadolinium ions.

Dye-doped droplets are known as mixtures of dyes with uniform solutions of water droplets in a continuous phase of oils with surfactants. To observe the relationship between water droplet structures and surfactant types on optical properties of dyes, a mixture of methyl orange (MO)-doped droplet prepared with benzane and hexane as oils and sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate (AOT) as a surfactant was thus examined using Z-scan instrument, spectrophotometer, and fluorimeter in the present study. The findings revealed that nonlinear refractive (NLR) index, nonlinear absorption (NLA) coefficient, as well as fluorescence intensity of the MO had enhanced following a reduction in the droplet water content induced by changes in the non-centrosymmetric charge density distribution of this pH indicator.

Background: Conjugation of triterpenoids such as betulinic acid 1 with the Triphenylphosphonium (TPP) group is a powerful approach to generating medicinal compounds. Their development proposes structure optimization in respect of availability and activity towards target cells and organelles. Selection of 1 or its precursor betulonic acid 2 and the optimal linker is of particular importance for drug candidate identification among the TPP-triterpenoid conjugates.

The study of intermolecular interactions of proteins has been an important problem for many years. This paper presents an approach to analyze different levels of protein interactions in solutions through a set of the second- and higher-order virial coefficients. The proposed approach is based on the diversified analysis of protein translational collective diffusion and self-diffusion obtained by dynamic light scattering and the pulsed-field gradient NMR (PFG NMR) spectroscopy experimental data.

The effects of neuropeptide Y (10-10 M) on electrical activity of right atrial cardiomyocytes of rats aging 7, 21, and 100 days were examined in vitro. Neuropeptide Y affected the amplitude-temporal parameters of the action potential in these cells. It decreased the duration of repolarization phase in 7-day-old rats in concentrations of 10 and 10 M, in 21-day-old rats at 10 and 10 M, and in 100-day-old at 10 M.

Malaria, dengue and chikungunya are the most rampant mosquito-borne infections predominantly in Pakistan. They pose a serious threat and cause a havoc for the victims owing to the life threatening signs and symptoms marked with elevated morbidity and mortality rate. It seems hard to discriminate due to common indications, consequently, deserves appropriate diagnosis prior elevated toll of death.

In our study, the rare earth element ytterbium (Yb) was demonstrated to affect water exchange in roots of Zea mays seedlings. Herewith, the overall membrane permeability (P) increased. The P increase was determined by aquaporin activity but not the membrane lipid component since the closure of aquaporin channels due to low intracellular pH abolished the positive effect of Yb on P.

The present work introduces ternary Ln(III) (Ln = Eu, Yb, Lu) complexes with thenoyltriflouro1,3-diketonate (TTA) and phosphine oxide derivative (PhO) as building blocks for core-shell nanoparticles with both Eu(III)- or Yb(III)-centered luminescence and the dual Eu(III)-Yb(III)-centered luminescence. Solvent-mediated self-assembly of the complexes is presented herein as the procedure for formation of EuLu, EuYb and YbLu heterometallic or homometallic cores coated by hydrophilic polystyrenesulfonate-based shells. Steady state and time resolved Eu-centered luminescence in homolanthanide and heterolanthanide EuLu and EuYb cores is affected by Eu → Eu and Eu → Yb energy transfer due to a close proximity of the lanthanide blocks within the core of nanoparticles.

A system for detection of malignantly transformed cells, including follicular lymphoma Bcells, was developed and experimentally validated. The system is based on the use of bacteriophages carrying exposed ligands for pathogenic B-cell receptors. The efficiency of binding to target cells is several times higher than in systems with chemically synthesized biotinylated peptides.

: New treatments are needed to reduce myocardial infarct size (MI) and prevent heart failure (HF) following acute myocardial infarction (AMI), which are the leading causes of death and disability worldwide. Studies in rodent AMI models showed that genetic and pharmacological inhibition of mitochondrial fission, induced by acute ischemia and reperfusion, reduced MI size. Whether targeting mitochondrial fission at the onset of reperfusion is also cardioprotective in a clinically-relevant large animal AMI model remains to be determined.
