We have studied the molecular properties of water in physically and chemically cross-linked gelatin hydrogels by FTIR-spectroscopy, NMR relaxation, and diffusivity and broadband dielectric spectroscopy, which are sensitive to dynamical properties of water, being a structural marker of polymer network. All experiments demonstrated definite reinforcement of the hydrogel net structure and an increase in the amount of hydrate water. FTIR experiments have shown that the chemical cross-linking of gelatin molecules initiates an increase in the collagen-like triple helices "strength", as a result of infused restriction on protein molecular mobility.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers developed polyurethane membranes that allow vapor to pass through using aminoethers of boric acid (AEBA), modified with bulk adducts from diphenylol propane diglycidyl ether and ethanolamine (EM).
  • These modifications reduced the size of AEBA-EM particles and their viscosity, which helped the membranes become more permeable to vapor.
  • The enhanced vapor permeability, which was tripled in the modified polyurethanes, occurs due to reduced cluster size that creates channels for water molecules, improving the membranes' efficiency in dehydrating isopropanol.

Hydrogels, three-dimensional hydrophilic water-insoluble polymer networks having mechanical properties inherent for solids, have attracted continuous research attention over a long time period. Here, we studied the structure and properties of hydrogel based on gelatin, κ-carrageenan and CNTs using the combination of SAXS, PXRD, AFM microscopy, SEM and rheology methods. We have shown that the integration of polysaccharide and protein in the composite hydrogel leads to suppression of their individual structural features and homogenization of two macromolecular components into a single structural formation.

Morphology of Ionic Micelles as Studied by Numerical Solution of the Poisson Equation.

ACS Omega

February 2022

Kazan Institute of Biochemistry and Biophysics, FRC Kazan Scientific Center, Russian Academy of Sciences, Lobachevsky Str., 2/31 Kazan 420111, Russia.

The existing concepts of the ionic micelle structure were specified. It was noted that the composition of dispersed phase particles in a liquid dispersion medium should necessarily include adsorbed counterions rigidly bound to these particles. By numerical solution of the Poisson equation for the two most often used approximations, the Poisson-Boltzmann (PB) model and the Jellium-approximation (JA), the electric potential decay from the Stern potential of dispersed phase particles was defined.

A new approach is introduced to obtain information about the adiabatic potential energy surface of the Jahn-Teller (JT) complexes subject to theT⊗e+t2problem in doped crystals. It employs simulation of the contribution of the JT sub-system to ultrasonic attenuation with account of three mechanisms of relaxation and subsequent comparison with the experimental data on temperature dependence of the attenuation obtained with the use of doped crystal and nominally pure one. The approach has been applied to the CaFcrystal doped with chromium.
