Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess the safety and effectiveness of combining intrastromal corneal ring segment (ICRS) implantation and corneal collagen crosslinking (CXL) for treating moderate-to-severe keratoconus in 69 patients.
  • Two groups were compared: one that received both treatments in a single session and another that had ICRS six months after CXL, with evaluations on visual acuity and corneal measurements conducted pre- and post-treatment.
  • Results showed both groups experienced significant improvement in uncorrected and best-corrected visual acuity, but the single-session group had better outcomes in corneal measurements, with no increase in complications from either treatment approach.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the lamina cribrosa curvature index in different types of glaucoma in comparison with clinical findings and conventional measurement methods.

Material And Method: Patients older than 18 years who were followed up in Glaucoma Unit of Department of Ophthalmology at Fırat University Faculty of Medicine, whose disease had been under control at least for 1 year, who had at least three reliable visual fields, whose refractive error was between - 6 and + 5 diopter and who did not have any disease other than glaucoma that would affect the visual field, were included in the study. Clinical and demographic characteristics, visual field, optical coherence tomography and lamina cribrosa curvature index (LCCI) results were evaluated.

Background/aim: Despite advancements in valve technology and increased clinical experience, complications related to conduction defects after transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVR) have not improved as rapidly as expected. In this study, we aimed to predict the development of complete atrioventricular (AV) block and bundle branch block during and after the TAVR procedure and to investigate any changes in the cardiac conduction system before and after the procedure using electrophysiological study.

Materials And Methods: A total of 30 patients who were scheduled for TAVR at our cardiovascular council were planned to be included in the study.

Serum GAS6, sAXL, IL-10, NO, and BCL-2 levels are decreased in patients with Behçet's disease.

Indian J Ophthalmol

May 2024

Department of Ophthalmology, Division of Uvea-Behçet Unit, Faculty of Medicine, Erciyes University, Kayseri, Turkey.

Purpose: Behçet's disease (BD) is an autoimmune chronic systemic inflammatory disease characterized by a versatile clinical spectrum. Growth arrest specific protein 6 (GAS6)/soluble AXL (sAXL) signaling pathway draws attention in the resolution of inflammation, and its deficiency is associated with chronic inflammatory, autoimmune diseases, as well as clearance of apoptotic cells by phagocytes - efferocytosis. In this study, it was aimed to investigate whether GAS6/sAXL, interleukin (IL)-10, nitric oxide (NO), and BCL-2 levels were associated with inflammation and efferocytosis contributes to the pathogenesis of BD.

Background: The purpose of this study is to determine the significance of markers such as C-reactive protein, procalcitonin, complete blood count parameters, delta neutrophil index, ischemia-modified albumin, presepsin, and oxidative stress indicators, which are associated with inflammation, oxidative stress, and ischemia in the pathology and diagnosis of acute cholecystitis in adults.

Methods: Patients diagnosed with acute cholecystitis in the emergency department and healthy individuals in the control group were included in the study. Routine blood count and biochemistry analyses were performed on the participants.

Background: The reasons for the etiology of premature ventricular contractions (PVCs) are not specifically known. Many patients are resistant to medical treatment, and a factor that would predict response to medical treatment cannot be identified. This study aims to investigate if a high catecholamine level results in polymorphic PVC.

  • Ovarian ischemia, often caused by ovarian torsion, is a critical condition impacting women of reproductive age, leading to decreased ovarian reserve; this study explores the effects of boric acid treatment on ovarian damage in female rats during ischemia/reperfusion.* -
  • Researchers created seven groups of rats, applying different methods of boric acid administration to assess its impact on histopathological changes, oxidative stress, and DNA integrity after ovarian ischemia and subsequent reperfusion.* -
  • Results showed that boric acid significantly mitigated inflammation and preserved ovarian follicle structure, improved biochemical markers like AMH, and reduced oxidative stress and DNA damage, indicating its potential therapeutic effects on ovarian ischemia injuries.*

Background Peritoneal dialysis patients are malnourished due to loss of protein in the dialysate and inadequate dialysis, although they take additional calories every day during treatment. Many parameters are used to assess nutritional status, with normalized protein catabolic rate (nPCR) being one of the most common. Asprosin, a novel adipokine secreted by adipose tissue, peaks during fasting and induces hepatic glucose release through the activation of the G-protein-cAMP-PKA pathway, which has been indicated to have a curative effect on chronic inflammation.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study investigates the protective effects of boric acid on female rat oocytes exposed to nonylphenol (NP), highlighting its potential in preserving ovarian quality and function.
  • - Histopathological and biochemical analyses revealed that boric acid mitigated tissue damage, restored hormone levels, and provided DNA protection, suggesting its positive impact on ovarian health.
  • - The findings indicate that boric acid may effectively counteract the negative effects of NP, reducing oxidative stress and inflammation, and thus plays a protective role against infertility caused by NP exposure.

Background: Primary/secondary omental torsion (POT/SOT), isolated segmental omental necrosis (ISON), and primary epiploic appendagitis (PEA) are rare causes of acute abdominal pain that often lead to misdiagnosis. Although the differential diagnosis may vary according to the localization and severity of the pain, and associated symptoms such as nausea-vomiting and fever, depending on the disease and site of involvement, the character of the pain is generally similar and in a continuous form. Depending on pain localization, it can mimic different clinical pictures such as acute appendicitis, acute diverticulitis, ovarian pathologies, urinary tract stones and acute cholecystitis, and patients are often diagnosed after surgical exploration.

  • The study aimed to compare capillary vascular status in crowded versus normal optic discs using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A).
  • It involved 101 eyes, with 51 having crowded discs and 50 having normal discs, measuring various vascular densities around the optic disc and within it.
  • The results showed no significant difference in vascular density around the discs between crowded and normal optic discs, but inside the crowded discs, vascular density was higher, indicating that smaller discs can still maintain their vascular structures despite size constraints.
