Most of the local anesthetic toxicity cases develop within the first five minutes of peripheral block administration. Late local anesthetic toxicity has been rarely reported in the literature. However, it is an important life-threatening problem that can lead to seizures, hemodynamic collapse, and cardiac arrest if it is ignored and not considered.

Article Synopsis
  • Vertebral compression fractures (VCF) often occur at the thoracolumbar junction (TLJ), and balloon kyphoplasty (BKP) is an effective treatment for bone remodeling in these cases.* -
  • A study involving 31 patients evaluated how factors like timing of surgery, age, sex, and body mass index (BMI) affect outcomes such as vertebral height and spinal angles after BKP.* -
  • Results show that early surgery leads to better recovery in vertebral heights, older patients experience more significant angle reduction, and those with a higher BMI have lower local kyphotic angles post-surgery.*

Pregnancy-related rupture of an arterial aneurysm is an unusual occurrence associated with an increased risk of morbidity and mortality. Splenic artery aneurysms are the most common (60%), followed by hepatic (20%), superior mesenteric (5.9%), coeliac (4%), ovarian, uterine, and renal (<2%) arteries during pregnancy.

Objective: Peripheral T-cell lymphomas (PTCLs) are an uncommon and quite heterogeneous group of disorders, representing only 10%-15% of all non-Hodgkin lymphomas. Although both molecular and clinical studies have increased in recent years, we still have little knowledge regarding real-life practice with PTCLs. In this study, we aimed to investigate the clinical characteristics and treatment outcomes of a large population-based cohort of patients presenting with systemic non-cutaneous PTCL.

Tumor budding (TB) and poorly differentiated clusters (PDCs) are powerful prognostic factors in colorectal cancer (CRC). Despite their morphologic and biological overlap, TB and PDC are assessed separately and are distinguished by an arbitrary cutoff for cell cluster size. This cutoff can be challenging to apply in practice and its biological significance remains unclear.

Background: Disease profiles have changed in the COVID-19 pandemic. In this study, we aimed to compare acute appendicitis cases before and during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Methods: A total of 130 patients were diagnosed with AA and operated between the days of first COVID-19 case on March 11, 2020, and May 11, 2020, and the same period of the previous year.

Background: The 5-factor modified Frailty Index (mFI-5), which is the latest version of the Frailty Index, is a tool that calculates the risk of complications after treatment by scoring the comorbidity status of the patient. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of the mFI-5 in predicting complications in geriatric patients with an ankle fracture.

Methods: A retrospective examination was made of a total of 94 patients aged >65 years who were treated for an ankle fracture in our hospital between 2015 and 2020.

Background: Imaging findings of both anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) sprain and mucoid degeneration overlap in some cases, which may cause errors in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) evaluation.

Purpose: To determine the ancillary findings on MRI in distinguishing between ACL sprain and mucoid degeneration, and also to obtain a diagnostic scheme.

Material And Methods: MRI scans of 77 patients with ACL mucoid degeneration and 77 cases with ACL sprain were retrospectively evaluated to compare with regard to parameters of age, sex, side, the status of posterior cruciate ligament - medial collateral ligament - lateral collateral ligament, bone marrow edema, intraosseous cyst, subchondral sclerosis, chondromalacia, meniscus tear, effusion, and osteochondral body.

Background: The aim of this study was to investigate the short- and long-term effects of Kinesio Taping (KT) and dry needling (DN) applications on pain, functionality, and muscle strength in patients with lateral epicondylitis by use of questionnaires and ultrasonography.

Methods: Seventy-eight patients were randomized into 3 groups. Each group followed a program that consisted of 9 treatment sessions in total, with 3 sessions per week for 3 weeks.

We aimed to investigate the bone and soft tissue changes accompanying tarsal coalition (TC) and aimed to evaluate their association with the location and type of coalition. Ankle magnetic resonance imagings of 65 patients with TC were included. The relationship between the location and type of coalition and bone marrow edema, subchondral cysts, sinus tarsi syndrome, tarsal tunnel syndrome, posterior impingement syndrome, accessory bone, tibiotalar effusion, talar osteochondritis dissecans, ganglion cysts, and calcaneal spur were evaluated.

Article Synopsis
  • A novel modified classification system for tibial plateau fractures was evaluated to improve preoperative information regarding associated soft tissue injuries.
  • The study involved 36 patients, primarily men, and found that 81% had at least one soft tissue injury, with 39% experiencing multiple injuries.
  • The researchers believe this classification could enhance surgical planning for tibial plateau fractures by providing valuable insights into the condition of soft tissues before surgery.

Purpose: This study aimed to determine the impact of surgical approach on postoperative recovery, quality of life, and satisfaction level in patients undergoing uniportal or multiportal video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) or open thoracotomy.

Design: This prospective study included patients who underwent open thoracotomy, uniportal VATS, or multiportal VATS in a tertiary Hospital between January 1, 2019 and May 1, 2021.

Methods: Recovery was evaluated at postoperative 24th, 48th, and 72nd hours, and 1 month using the Postoperative Recovery Index (PoRI); quality of life was evaluated using the Short Form 36 (SF-36) at postoperative 1 month; and patient satisfaction\was assessed with visual analog scale (VAS) at postoperative 72nd hours and at 1 month.

Objectives: In addition to the hemostatic properties of hemostatic agents, the investigation of their immunogenic properties, their local effects on application area has been the subject of many experimental studies. There are limited data on the inflammatory effects of Bovine serum albumin-glutaraldehyde and Polyethylene glycol polymer. Therefore, we investigated the effects of these agents on tissue reactions and inflammation in rabbit carotid artery anastomosis in our experimental study.

Background: Acute respiratory distress syndrome is a devastating complication of severe sepsis. Preclinical models suggest that direct lung injury begins with attack to the lung epithelium, but indirect lung injury results from systemic endothelial damage due to inflammatory mediators. The aim of the present study was to explore the effect of octreotide on lungs in a surgically induced sepsis model in rats.

Background: Recent reports have shown that left-and right-sided colon cancers display different clinical and biological features. Chromosomal instability, epigenetic alterations, and defects in the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) mismatch repair (MMR) system may lead to the development of colorectal cancer (CRC). Besides microsatellite instability (MSI) caused by DNA MMR activity degradation increases the risk for CRC.

We aimed to reveal the anti-convulsant effects sulfasalazine and its mechanism in pentylenetetrazole (PTZ)-induced seizures in rats. Forty-eight male Wistar albino rats (200-250 g) were randomly divided into two groups: 24 for electroencephalography (EEG) recording (group A) and 24 for behavioral studies (group B). About 70 mg/kg PTZ was used for behavioral studies after sulfasalazine administration and 35 mg/kg PTZ was used for EEG recording after sulfasalazine administration.
