A new cause of developmental and epileptic encephalopathy with continuous spike-and-wave during sleep: CDKL5 disorder.

The CDKL5 disorder is characterized by early onset epilepsy, stereotypical hand movement, absent speech and severe hypotonia. Herein, we report epileptic encephalopathy with continuous spike-and-wave during sleep (CSWS) in apatient with CDKL5 disorder. She admitted with complaints of frequently recurring generalized tonic and myoclonic seizures.

What's Happening When the Pregnancies Are Not Terminated in Case of Anencephalic Fetuses?

Background: To review the obstetric outcomes of pregnancies with anencephalic fetuses when these pregnancies are not terminated and ongoing.

Methods: A retrospective chart review is made of the cases with a prenatal diagnosis of anencephaly and who were opted to continue the pregnancy in 1-year period. The evaluated data included gestational age at diagnosis, gestational age at birth, labor induction rates, cesarean delivery rates, stillbirth, shoulder dystocia rate, antepartum and postpartum hemorrhage.

Is high-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation of the left primary motor cortex superior to the stimulation of the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex in fibromyalgia syndrome?

Objective: To investigate effectiveness of two different high-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) protocols on pain, fatigue, quality of life (QoL) and depression in female patients with fibromyalgia.

Methods: Thirty patients were randomized into three groups. Fifteen sessions of 10 Hz (90% resting motor threshold-RMT, 1200 pulses) rTMS were applied to left primary motor cortex and left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) in Group M1 (n:10) and Group DLPFC (n:10), respectively.

Serum Resolvin E1 Levels and Its Relationship with Disease Activity in Ulcerative Colitis.

Background: Resolvins originate from -3 PUFA (polyunsaturated fatty acid) precursors and play a role in the resolution of inflammation. The aim of this study was to determine the serum Resolvin E1 levels in patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) and to evaluate the relationship between the serum Resolvin E1 levels and ulcerative colitis disease activity.

Methods: In this observational study, serum samples were collected from 51 patients with UC and 30 healthy controls for the determination of Resolvin E1 levels.

Evaluation of Endothelial Dysfunction in Bipolar Affective Disorders: Serum Endocan and Urotensin-II Levels.

Objective: This study investigated changes in urotensin-II (U-II) and endocan levels which can be used as an early biological marker of endothelial injury in the episode and remission phases of bipolar affective disorder (BAD).

Methods: We compared endocan and U-II levels, which has been shown to be closely associated with neurotransmitter systems in addition to continuity of endothelial structure and inflammatory response, in patients with BAD in remission for at least one year (n=42) and in patients still in manic or depressive episodes (n=16) with healthy controls (n=30).

Results: Both endocan and U-II levels were significantly higher in the bipolar patients than in the controls.

Background: Obesity is the main obstacle for metabolic control in patients with type 2 diabetes. Turkey has the highest prevalence of obesity and type 2 diabetes in Europe. The effect of obesity on the metabolic control, and the macro- and microvascular complications of patients are not apparent.

Evaluation of early myocardial dysfunction with strain echocardiography in chronic hepatitis B patients.

Introduction: It is well known that chronic hepatitis B virus infection (CHBV) can be associated with cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma but it can also be associated with extra-hepatic effects, of which cardiac manifestations are the one of the least known. There is a limited amount of data about myocardial dysfunction in CHBV and insufficient data of strain echocardiography in CHBV. The aim of this study was to detect early myocardial dysfunction in CHBV using strain echocardiography.

Comparison of the efficacy of low-level laser therapy and photodynamic therapy on oral mucositis in rats.

Cancer treatment with chemotherapy or radiotherapy is associated with some side effects including in the oral cavity. One of the more significant oral complications is oral mucositis (OM) which induces severe pain and limits fundamental life behaviors such as eating, drinking, and talking. Although advancements in cancer treatment improved the survival rate, severe OM and opportunistic infection affect treatment adversely.

Methods: The cross-sectional study was conducted in Tepecik district of Izmir, Turkey, from February to June 2013, and comprised women aged 15 years or above. A 21-item questionnaire was used to collect data through interviews.

Heterotopic chondroid tissue of the main bile duct mimicking Klatskin tumor: case report and review of the literature.

Heterotopic tissue in the bile duct is a very rare condition. There are a few case reports of heterotopic tissue including gastric and pancreatic cells. However, we could not find any data regarding heterotopic chondroid tissue obstructing the common bile duct in the literature.

Background: Recent reports showed neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (MLR), as a predictor of progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) in various malignancies.

Materials And Methods: We retrospectively examined the PLR, NLR, and MLR in a cohort of 186 newly diagnosed multiple myeloma (MM) patients. This study investigated the prognostic relevance of NLR, PLR, and MLR in MM patients.

Effects of Carbon Dioxide Insufflation and Trendelenburg Position on Brain Oxygenation During Laparoscopy in Children.

Purpose: Laparoscopic appendectomy has become more popular compared with the open appendectomy in children, but there are limited data on the effects of pneumoperitoneum and Trendelenburg position on cerebral oxygenation. This study was designed to evaluate the changes in cerebral saturation using near-infrared spectroscope during laparoscopic surgery in children.

Methods: The children underwent laparoscopic (LAP Group, n=22) or open appendectomy (OPEN Group, n=22).

Effect of experimentally induced hypothyroidism during gestation period on activity dependent neurotrophic factor (ADNF) in newborn rat brain tissue.

Purpose The aim of the study was to evaluate the effects of prenatal hypothyroidism on neonatal rats by the way of activity-dependent neuroprotective factor (ADNF) expression. Methods Twenty-one Wistar albino neonatal rats were divided into two subgroups; a control group and neonatal rats with experimental maternal hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism was induced by using propylthiouracil (PTU).
