Immunogenic cell death (ICD) refers to an immunologically distinct process of regulated cell death that activates, rather than suppresses, innate and adaptive immune responses. Such responses culminate into T cell-driven immunity against antigens derived from dying cancer cells. The potency of ICD is dependent on the immunogenicity of dying cells as defined by the antigenicity of these cells and their ability to expose immunostimulatory molecules like damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) and cytokines like type I interferons (IFNs).

While there are positive benefits from physical activity participation for individuals with Down syndrome, little is known about the effects of swimming training. The aim of this study was to compare the body composition and physical fitness profile of competitive swimmers and moderately active (untrained) individuals with Down syndrome. The Eurofit Special test was applied to a group of competitive swimmers ( = 18) and a group of untrained individuals ( = 19), all with Down syndrome.

Histories of psychiatry in the United States can shed light on current areas of need in mental health research and treatment. Often, however, these histories fail to represent accurately the distinct trajectories of psychiatric care among black and white populations, not only homogenizing the historical narrative but failing to account for current disparities in mental health care among these populations. The current paper explores two parallel histories of psychiatry in the United States and the way that these have come to influence current mental health practices.

Appropriate care delivery for patients with severe mental illness (SMI) requires a high level of collaboration quality between primary, mental health, and social care services. Few studies have addressed the interpersonal and inter-organizational components of collaboration within one unique study setting and it is unclear how these components contribute to overall collaboration quality. Using a comprehensive model that includes ten key indicators of collaboration in relation to both components, we evaluated how interpersonal and inter-organizational collaboration quality were associated in 19 networks that included 994 services across Belgium.

Current left ventricular assist devices are designed to reestablish patient's hemodynamics at rest but they lack the suitability to sustain the heart adequately during physical exercise. Aim of this work is to assess the performance during exercise of a left ventricular assist device with flatter pump pressure-flow characteristic and increased pressure sensitivity (left ventricular assist device 1) and to compare it to the performance of a left ventricular assist device with a steeper characteristic (left ventricular assist device 2). The two left ventricular assist devices were tested at constant rotational speed with a verified computational cardiorespiratory simulator reproducing an average left ventricular assist device patient response to exercise (EXE↑) and a left ventricular assist device patient with no chronotropic and inotropic response (EXE→).

Mechanical versus humoral determinants of brain death-induced lung injury.

Background: The mechanisms of brain death (BD)-induced lung injury remain incompletely understood, as uncertainties persist about time-course and relative importance of mechanical and humoral perturbations.

Methods: Brain death was induced by slow intracranial blood infusion in anesthetized pigs after randomization to placebo (n = 11) or to methylprednisolone (n = 8) to inhibit the expression of pro-inflammatory mediators. Pulmonary artery pressure (PAP), wedged PAP (PAWP), pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR) and effective pulmonary capillary pressure (PCP) were measured 1 and 5 hours after Cushing reflex.

Dairy products provide a package of essential nutrients that is difficult to obtain in low-dairy or dairy-free diets, and for many people it is not possible to achieve recommended daily calcium intakes with a dairy-free diet. Despite the established benefits for bone health, some people avoid dairy in their diet due to beliefs that dairy may be detrimental to health, especially in those with weight management issues, lactose intolerance, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or trying to avoid cardiovascular disease. This review provides information for health professionals to enable them to help their patients make informed decisions about consuming dairy products as part of a balanced diet.

Increased plasma osmolarity induces intracellular water depletion and cell shrinkage (CS) followed by activation of a regulatory volume increase (RVI). In skeletal muscle, the hyperosmotic shock-induced CS is accompanied by a small membrane depolarization responsible for a release of Ca(2+) from intracellular pools. Hyperosmotic shock also induces phosphorylation of STE20/SPS1-related proline/alanine-rich kinase (SPAK).

Unlabelled: We investigated predictors of clinical evolution in progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis type 2 patients and how they relate to bile salt export pump (BSEP) expression and its (re)targeting. Our retrospective study included 22 children with progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis type 2. Clinical, biochemical, and histological characteristics were reviewed on admittance and following treatment with either ursodeoxycholic acid alone (10 mg/kg thrice daily, n = 19) or partial biliary diversion (n = 3).

Polycystic liver disease (PLD) may provoke massive hepatomegaly and severe physical and social handicaps. Data on orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) for PLD are rare and conflicting. Conservative surgery (resection or fenestration) is indicated for large single cysts, but its value for small diffuse cysts is questionable.
