Microbial extracellular respiration is an important energy metabolism on earth, which is significant for the elemental biogeochemical cycle. Herein, extracellular Fe(III) and electrode respiration were confirmed in Thermoanaerobacterium thermosaccharolyticum MJ2. Microbial fuel cell (MFC) with lignocellulose as an electron donor is considered a sustainable biorefinery. However, low lignocellulose degradation and energy output restrict the scale of application. Herein, the extracellular electron transfer (EET) capacity of Acetivibrio thermocellus DSM 1313 with lignocellulose as substrate was shown to be mediated by the self-produced flavin, and its intracellular electron transfer went through the whole respiratory chain.

With the increased construction of dam reservoirs and the demand for water security, terrestrial dissolved organic matter (DOM) has received attention because of its role in regulating water quality, ecological functions, and the fate and transport of pollutants in dam reservoirs. This study investigated the transformations of soil DOM and vegetation DOM of dam reservoirs following photodegradation and biodegradation before conservative mixing, as well as the resultant effects on phenanthrene binding. Based on the results, terrestrial DOM could undergo transformation via photodegradation and biodegradation before conservative mixing in dam reservoirs.

To reduce the environmental damage caused by waste rubber, crumb rubber concrete (CRC) was prepared by replacing some fine aggregates with crumb rubber. The effects of elevated temperature as well as crumb rubber content on the mechanical properties of the prepared CRC were studied. On their journey from the wine grape to the resulting wine, microbiota from grape surfaces controlled by multiple factors is transferred to wine spontaneous fermentation process with indisputable consequences for wine quality parameters. The associated microbiota was regionally distinct (defined to microbial terroir) but how these microbial patterns with significantly regional distinctiveness quantitatively drive the wine regional characteristics are not definite within a complete grape ecosystem at different geographical (> 300 km), subregional (< 10 km), and varietal scales. Here, we collected 24 samples (containing two grape varieties) from four subregions of two regions in Xinjiang wine production area to investigate fungal distribution patterns and the association with wine chemical composition at different evaluation scales.

A zwitterionic magnetic microporous organic network (MMON-SOH-NH) with numerous amino and sulfonic acid ion-pare binding sites was designed and synthesized for efficient magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) of fluoroquinolones (FQs) from meat samples. The core-shell MMON-SOH-NH offered large specific surface area, rapid magnetic responsiveness, good stability, and multiple binding sites for FQs. The density functional theory and independent gradient model evaluations confirmed hydrogen bonding, π-π and ion-pair interactions between MMON-SOH-NH and FQs.

Interface oxygen vacancies (OVs) are commonly used to improve the catalytic performance of activators in persulfate-based advanced oxidation processes, but the underlying mechanism was not fully explored. This work reports a facile heat treatment method to regulate OVs in MoO to elucidate the mechanism of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activated by OVs to degrade 2,4,4-Trichlorobiphenyl (PCB28). Electron spin resonance, free radical quenching, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy confirmed that both reducing Mo species and OVs of MoO surface were responsible for PMS activation.

Starch and cellulose are the fundamental components of tobacco, while their excessive content will affect the quality of tobacco. Enzymatic treatment with different enzymes is a promising method to modulate the chemical composition and improve the sensory quality of tobacco leaves. In this study, enzymatic treatments, such as amylase, cellulase, and their mixed enzymes, were used to improve tobacco quality, which could alter the content of total sugar, reducing sugar, starch, and cellulose in tobacco leaves.

Many studies have indicated a strong relationship between cardiac and brain activities, both of which are sensitive to high-altitude exposure. This study combined a consciousness access task and electrocardiograms (ECG) to uncover conscious awareness in response to high-altitude exposure and its relation to cardiac activity. When compared with the low-altitude groups, the behavioral results showed that the high-altitude participants shortened the time of access to visual awareness of grating orientation, which was accompanied by a faster heart rate, excluding the influence of pre-stimulus heart rate, extent of cardiac deceleration after presenting the stimulus, and task difficulty.

This study proposes a novel and feasible dissolution and fractionation method of depectinated sugar beet pulp (SBP) in NaOH/Urea/HO, ionic liquid (IL) and alkaline treatment processes. Interestingly, the complicated structure of SBP can be treated with 30 % HSO to increase the dissolution rate. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis confirmed that the appearance of cellulose and hemicellulose obtained by two methods were different.

Visual perception and mental imagery have been shown to share a hierarchical topological visual structure of neural representation, despite the existence of dissociation of neural substrate between them in function and structure.
