Despite the promising potential of transition metal oxides (TMOs) as capacitive deionization (CDI) electrodes, the actual capacity of TMOs electrodes for sodium storage is significantly lower than the theoretical capacity, posing a major obstacle. Herein, we prepared the kinetically favorable ZnNiO electrode in situ growth on carbon felt (ZnNiO@CF) through constraining the rate of OH generation in the hydrothermal method. ZnNiO@CF exhibited a high-density hierarchical nanosheet structure with three-dimensional open pores, benefitting the ion transport/electron transfer.

Paraquat (PQ) is a widely used and harmful herbicide that must be detected in the environment. This study reports a novel composite (CoS-GCN) prepared by assembling cobalt disulfide (CoS) derived from metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) on graphitic carbon nitride (GCN). An electrochemical sensor (CoS-GCN/ glassy carbon electrode (GCE)) was successfully prepared by modifying CoS-GCN onto a GCE to sensitively detect PQ.

Involvement of the Keap1-Nrf2-ARE pathway in the antioxidant activity of sinomenine.

Arch Biochem Biophys

March 2024

Department of Thoracic Surgery, Qilu Hospital of Shandong University, Jinan, 250012, China. Electronic address:

Sinomenine is a pure alkaloid isolated from Sinomenium acutum. This study is aimed to investigate the critical role of the nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2)-kelch-like ECH-associated protein-1(Keap1)-antioxidant response element (ARE) antioxidative signaling pathway in protecting sinomenine against HO-induced oxidative injury. Cytotoxicity and antioxidant experiments to initially determine the protective effects of sinomenine show that sinomenine has no effect on the decreased cell viability and presents similar potency in scavenging all three free radicals.

Electronic address:

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), featuring tunable conductivity, tailored pore/structure and high surface area, have emerged as promising electrode nanomaterials for ion storage in capacitive deionization (CDI) and garnered tremendous attention in recent years. Despite the many advantages, the perspective from which MOFs should be designed and prepared for use as CDI electrode materials still faces various challenges that hinder their practical application. This summary proposes design principles for the pore size, pore environment, structure and dimensions of MOFs to precisely tailor the surface area, selectivity, conductivity, and Faradaic activity of electrode materials based on the ion storage mechanism in the CDI process.

Laboratory of Tissue Homeostasis, Haihe Laboratory of Cell Ecosystem, Tianjin, China.

Primary cilia are distributed extensively within the corneal epithelium and endothelium. However, the presence of cilia in the corneal stroma and the dynamic changes and roles of endothelial and stromal cilia in corneal homeostasis remain largely unknown. Here, we present compelling evidence for the presence of primary cilia in the corneal stroma, both in vivo and in vitro.

Qingdao Cancer Prevention and Treatment Research Institute, Qingdao Central Hospital, University of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences (Qingdao Central Medical Group), Qingdao, China.

Cancer is the most common cause of human death worldwide, posing a serious threat to human health and having a negative impact on the economy. In the past few decades, significant progress has been made in anticancer therapies, but traditional anticancer therapies, including radiation therapy, surgery, chemotherapy, molecular targeted therapy, immunotherapy and antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs), have serious side effects, low specificity, and the emergence of drug resistance. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop new treatment methods to improve efficacy and reduce side effects.

Achieving ultra-high tensile strength and exceptional toughness is a longstanding goal for structural materials. However, previous attempts using covalent and non-covalent bonds have failed, leading to the belief that these two properties are mutually exclusive. Consequently, commercial fibers have been forced to compromise between tensile strength and toughness, as seen in the differences between nylon and Kevlar.

The escalation of global eutrophication has significantly increased due to the impact of climate change, particularly the increased frequency of extreme rainfall events. Predicting and managing eutrophication requires understanding the consequences of precipitation events on algal dynamics. Here, we assessed the influence of precipitation events throughout the year on nutrient and phytoplankton dynamics in a drinking water reservoir from January 2020 to January 2022.

3D grape string-like heterostructures enable high-efficiency sodium ion capture in TiCT MXene/fungi-derived carbon nanoribbon hybrids.

March 2024

Research Center for Environmental Functional Materials, State Key Laboratory of Pollution Control and Resource Reuse, College of Environmental Science and Engineering, Tongji University, 1239 Siping Road, Shanghai 200092, P. R. China.

2D transition metal carbides and carbonitrides (MXenes) have emerged as promising electrode materials for electrochemistry ion capture but always suffer from severe layer-restacking and irreversible oxidation that restrains their electrochemical performance. Here we design a dual strategy of microstructure tailoring and heterostructure construction to synthesize a unique 3D grape string-like heterostructure consisting of TiCT MXene hollow microspheres wrapped by fungi-derived N-doping carbon nanoribbons (denoted as GMNC). The 3D grape string-like heterostructure effectively avoids the aggregation of TiCT MXene sheets and enhances the stability of MXenes, providing abundant active sites for ion capture, and an interconnected conductive bionic nanofiber network for high-rate electron transport.

The development of new cryoprotectants for cryopreservation of cells has attracted considerable interest. Herein, five calixarene-based CPAs (SC4A, S-S-C4A, S-SO-C4A, SBAC4A, and CAC4A) were developed, and their IRI activity, DIS property and cryoprotective effect were studied. SBAC4A with a sulphobetaine zwitterion and SC4A with sulfo group modification possessed better cryoprotective effects than the other calixarene-based CPAs, especially for SBAC4A with the enhanced cell viabilities of 16.
