Traumatic tricuspid regurgitation (TTR) is an uncommon cause of acute right ventricular dysfunction. The surgical approach can be complex, and repair tends to have a lower success rate when right heart failure symptoms are present. We present a case of a 56-year-old man with chronic isolated tricuspid valve flail and severe TTR due to high-energy blunt chest trauma from a vehicle accident 24 years prior.

  • - The study investigates the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of intensive care personnel in Rwanda regarding high-consequence infectious diseases (HCIDs) like Ebola, revealing that many staff have limited experience and training in infection prevention and control (IPC).
  • - A survey conducted with 107 participants highlighted that while 58% felt knowledgeable and 72.9% adhered to hand hygiene, a significant number failed to consistently follow IPC measures, particularly in high-risk situations like aerosol-generating procedures.
  • - The findings suggest that although staff perceive a high risk of infection, their moderate knowledge and inconsistent IPC compliance indicate a need for ongoing education and training to ensure better protection against preventable infections.

Tackling pulmonary fibrosis risks in post-COVID-19: cutting-edge treatments.

Expert Opin Pharmacother

January 2025

Department of Respiratory Functional Exploration, University Medical Centre, University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Ho Chi Minh city, Vietnam.

Introduction: Pulmonary fibrosis (PF) post-COVID-19 has been identified as an important complication of Long-COVID, especially in patients with severe respiratory symptoms. High-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) is the main tool for detecting fibrotic lesions in patients with PF post-COVID-19.

Areas Covered: We conducted a systematic review with the following objectives: (1) to summarize the incidence and disease burden of post‑COVID‑19 pulmonary fibrosis, (2) to provide information on available therapies and drugs for its management, (3) to comprehensively evaluate the initial treatment efficacy of these drugs, and (4) to identify the limitations and challenges associated with current treatment approaches.

  • The study focuses on improving the quantification of phages for personalized therapy and industrial use, highlighting that the traditional culture-based method is accurate but time-consuming.
  • A DNase treatment before using quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) is proposed to enhance the accuracy of phage quantification, though qPCR still tends to overestimate compared to the gold standard method.
  • Findings indicate that the differences in phage quantification methods vary based on the age of the phage stocks, and electron microscopy confirmed the presence of free DNA influencing the results.

  • - The MELD score, created in 2002, assesses liver transplant candidates' mortality risk by analyzing kidney, liver, and blood clotting functions, but it doesn't always accurately predict survival for 15-20% of patients.
  • - A study conducted from January 2016 to September 2023 with 87 patients found no significant relationship between MELD scores and 30 to 60-day post-transplant survival, suggesting that current methodologies may need reevaluation.
  • - The results highlight the importance of considering individual patient factors and advocate for more comprehensive predictive models to improve liver transplantation outcomes through future larger studies.

Survivors of COVID-19 are susceptible to diminished health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and adverse psychological health, which may be exacerbated by their experiences of fear and the impact of the pandemic itself. This study aims to identify distinct fear and impact patterns related to the COVID-19 pandemic among survivors through latent profile analysis (LPA) and examine the associations of fear and impact patterns with post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) and HRQoL. A total of 5,890 Vietnamese COVID-19 survivors completed the COVID-19 Impact Battery- Disability Scale (CIB-D), the Fear of COVID-19 Scale (FCoV-19 S), the Impact of Event Scale-Revised for PTSS, and the 36-Item Short Form Survey (SF-36) for HRQoL.

  • This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of ultrasound elastography compared to fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) in diagnosing thyroid nodules as benign or malignant.
  • The research involved 360 patients with visible thyroid nodules and found that FNAC outperformed ultrasound elastography in terms of sensitivity (92.00%) and specificity (85.33%) for distinguishing benign nodules.
  • Ultimately, while ultrasound elastography showed potential with an accuracy of 81.94%, FNAC maintains its status as the gold standard with an accuracy of 85.47%, particularly across different age groups.

An approach to reduce inhaler errors using Donabedian's triad.

Front Med Technol

November 2024

Department of Internal Medicine, College of Medical and Health Sciences, UAE University, Al Ain, United Arab Emirates.

Inhaler errors inversely affect the outcome of respiratory diseases. Inhaler devices, such as the metered-dose inhalers (MDI) and dry powder inhalers (DPI), are commonly used in treating respiratory diseases like asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and incorrect use of these devices can result in suboptimal treatment outcomes, increased probabilities of hospitalizations or admissions, and poorer quality of life. Patient related factors to inhaler errors include age, cognitive and physical abilities, education, language barriers, and preferences.

Background: Genomic sequence similarity comparison is a crucial research area in bioinformatics. Multiple Sequence Alignment (MSA) is the basic technique used to identify regions of similarity between sequences, although MSA tools are widely used and highly accurate, they are often limited by computational complexity, and inaccuracies when handling highly divergent sequences, which leads to the development of alignment-free (AF) algorithms.

Results: This paper presents TreeWave, a novel AF approach based on frequency chaos game representation and discrete wavelet transform of sequences for phylogeny inference.
