Successful treatment of acute device thrombosis of patent foramen ovale with slow infusion of low-dose thrombolytic therapy.

Eur Heart J Case Rep

August 2024

Kartal Kosuyolu High Specialty Training and Research Hospital, Department of Cardiology, University of Medical Sciences, Istanbul, Turkey.

Article Synopsis
  • Percutaneous closure of patent foramen ovale (PFO) helps prevent recurrent cerebral embolism, but device-related thrombosis can occur, leading to serious complications.
  • A case is presented of a 40-year-old woman who developed a thrombus after PFO closure, which was successfully treated with a slow infusion of low-dose tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA).
  • This case highlights that while acute thrombosis of PFO devices is rare, low-dose t-PA can be an effective treatment option if there are no contraindications.

There are some complications after transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), which is an alternative to surgery for the treatment of severe aortic stenosis. Valve migration, an unusual but life-threatening complication of TAVR, usually occurs during or several hours after the procedure and is associated with poor outcome. Therefore, operators must be experienced in rescue treatments.

An assessment of serum vitamin B12 and folate in patients with Crohn's disease.

Medicine (Baltimore)

December 2022

Department of Gastroenterology, University of Health Sciences, Kartal Koşuyolu High Specialty Training and Research Hospital, Istanbul, Turkey.

Crohn's disease is a chronic inflammatory condition that can involve any area in the gastrointestinal tract often involving the distal ileum where vitamin B12 is specifically absorbed. The aim of this study was to ascertain serum vitamin B12 and folate levels in order to investigate the correlation among these vitamin levels and disease activation, localization, duration and age at the onset of the disease. Study population included 103 patients with Crohn's disease and a healthy control group of 114 individuals.

Background: Left ventricular apical thrombus LVAT) formation is a well-known complication of acute anterior myocardial infarction (AMI). The CHA2DS2VASc is a scoring system that has been used to estimate the risk of thromboembolism in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation. This score has also been used for other clinical conditions.

The effect of malnutrition on outcomes after carotid artery stenting (CAS) is not well known. This study reports the relationship between malnutrition and post-procedure 30-day major adverse events (MAEs). A total of 978 patients hospitalized for CAS were enrolled in the study.

Aim: The present study evaluates the prognostic significance of perineural invasion (PNI) on 2-year, 5-year, and overall survival in patients undergoing gastrectomy and D2 lymphadenectomy due to locally advanced gastric cancer.

Materials And Methods: Included in the study were 231 patients who underwent surgery between November 2006 and October 2018 due to stage 1B and over locally advanced gastric cancer, whose records were reviewed retrospectively.

Statistical Analysis: The variables in the presence or absence of PNI were compared between the two groups with a Chi-square test, a Fisher's exact test, a likelihood ratio, and a Mann-Whitney U test.

Objective: This research aimed to investigate the predictive value of the uric acid-to-serum albumin ratio (UAR) in establishing the severity and extent of coronary artery disease (CAD) with non-ST segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) patients.

Methods: A total of 402 patients (mean age 63.5 ± 11.

Background: Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) remains the gold standard treatment for mutivessel and left main coronary artery disease (CAD). Saphenous vein graft (SVG) patency is still a problem in CAD patients after CABG surgery. The Dual Antiplatelet Treatment (DAPT) score is a clinical prediction tool that predicts ischaemic and bleeding risk in CAD patients.

Objective: Endovascular therapy (EVT) has increasingly been used even after the development of new techniques and technologies. EVT has displayed durable early and mid-term outcomes for infrarenal aorta occlusions (IAO). Nonetheless, little is known regarding their long-term outcomes and predictors of restenosis.

We report the results of endovascular treatment of Trans-Atlantic Inter-Society Consensus II (TASC) A&B, TASC C, and TASC D aortoiliac lesions in a single vascular center. In this retrospective, observational cohort study, we analyzed 395 patients (mean age 61.2 ± 9.

Objectives: The cross-sectional study aimed to assess myocardial functions using global longitudinal strain (GLS) echocardiography and arrhythmia parameters with treatment naive newly diagnosed rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and no clinical evidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD).

Methods: Seventy seven newly diagnosed treatment-naive RA patients were enrolled. Disease severity was evaluated according to rheumatoid factor (RF) and anti-citrullinated protein antibodies (ACPA) positivity, and Disease Activity Score 28 C-reactive protein (DAS28 CRP).

Background: The Synergy between Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (SYNTAX) score, has been used to estimate the extent and complexity of coronary artery disease (CAD). The H2FPEF score enables robust discrimination of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) from non-cardiac aetiologies of dyspnea. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between H2FPEF and SYNTAX scores in patients with non-ST elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI).

Background: Portal hypertensive polyps in patients with portal hypertension are described.

Aims: The most significant and serious complication in liver cirrhosis proves to be portal hypertension. Polypoid lesions, which can be seen in the stomach as endoscopic finding in patients with portal hypertension, have not quite been defined in the literature.

Background: Early diagnosis of non-ST elevation acute coronary syndrome (NSTE-ACS) and prediction of the severity of current coronary artery disease (CAD) play a major role in patient prognosis. Electrocardiography has a unique value in the diagnosis and provides prognostic information on patients with NSTE-ACS. In the present study, we aimed to examine the relationship between P wave peak time (PWPT) and the severity of CAD in patients with NSTE-ACS.

Background: The aim of this study was to explore the role of oxidative stress index (OSI), myeloperoxidase (MPO), and catalase (CAT) activity in cardiac allograft vasculopathy (CAV) in heart transplant recipients (HTRs).

Methods: The study enrolled a median age of 41 ± 9 years 47 recipients. The HTx patients were divided into two groups based on the presence CAV as follows: CAV and CAV group.

Purpose: To investigate the efficacy of positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) in detection and management of hepatic and extrahepatic metastases from gastrointestinal cancers.

Materials And Methods: Between February 2008 and July 2010, patients histopathologically diagnosed with gastrointestinal cancer and showing suspected metastasis on CT screening were subsequently evaluated with PET/CT. All patients were subgrouped according to histopathological origin and localization of the primary tumor.

Background: Since the first introduction of tumour markers, their usefulness for diagnosis has been a challenging question. The aim of the present prospective study was to investigate, in colorectal cancer patients, the relationship between preoperative tumour marker concentrations and various clinical variables.

Methods: The study prospectively enrolled 131 consecutive patients with a confirmed diagnosis of colorectal carcinoma and 131 age- and sex-matched control subjects with no malignancy.

Background: The ideal sedative agent for endoscopic procedures should allow a rapid modification of the sedation level and should not have any adverse effects.

Aim: To evaluate and compare the efficacy, safety, cost and patient satisfaction of some propofol-based sedation regimens administered during colonoscopy.

Material And Methods: One hundred twenty one patients scheduled for elective outpatient colonoscopy with conscious sedation were randomized to four groups to evaluate the administration of dexmedetomidine, sufentanil, meperidine and midazolam in combination with propofol to maintain sedation during the procedure.
