The Ozaki Procedure is an innovative surgical technique aiming of aortic valve neocuspidization using glutaraldehyde-treated autologous pericardium was first developed by Ozaki et al in 2007. With this newly developed technique, valve replacement was achieved without using prosthetic material due to both aortic stenosis and aortic insufficiency. Between December 2020 and December 2022, a total of 59 patients were operated on with the Ozaki Procedure due to aortic valve pathologies in our center.

Background: This study aims to investigate the protective effects of glutamine against cerebral injury resulting from cerebral ischemia-reperfusion by bilateral carotid occlusion in rats.

Methods: Eighteen Wistar albino rats were randomly divided into three equal groups: 1) control group; 2) ischemia-reperfusion group which underwent clamping of the carotid artery for 20 min; and 3) ischemiareperfusion + glutamine group which was treated with two doses of glutamine (1 g/kg) prior to the same clamping procedure as the ischemia-reperfusion group. All rats were sacrificed 24 h after the experiment.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate bloodstream infections caused by in immunocompetent patients with respect to clinical features and risk factors for mortality.

Methods: We reviewed bloodstream infections detected between January 1, 2012, and July 1, 2021, to identify nosocomial bacteremia in Koşuyolu Research and Training Hospital.

Results: We identified a total of 97 patients with bloodstream infections.

Background: Acute type A aortic dissection (ATAAD) is one of the most mortal cardiovascular diseases and requires urgent diagnosis and surgery. The patient's clinical findings, complications, and patient's history are closely related to mortality rates. Cardiac surgery score (CASUS) is a scoring system which is calculated by considering the special pathophysiological conditions of patients undergoing cardiac surgery and predicts post-operative results with high accuracy.

This study aimed to address the role of various inflammation-related blood indices for the assessment of in-hospital outcomes in subjects undergoing Glenn procedure. Subjects who underwent the Glenn procedure for hypoplastic left heart syndrome were analysed retrospectively. Subjects were divided into two groups: Group 1 consisted of 78 patients who were discharged, and Group 2 included 12 patients who died after surgery.

Article Synopsis
  • Ineffective esophageal motility (IEM) is the most common esophageal motility disorder and this study explores its relationship with gastro-esophageal reflux disease by comparing patients with pathological and physiological esophageal acid reflux.
  • A total of 62 patients diagnosed with IEM were assessed using high-resolution manometry and divided into two groups based on 24-hour acid monitoring results.
  • Findings indicated that the physiological reflux group was younger on average and had lower rates of esophagitis compared to the pathological reflux group, although other factors such as sphincter pressures and severity of IEM were similar between both groups.

Prosthetic valve thrombosis (PVT) is a life-threatening valve dysfunction. In asymptomatic cases, as well as certain symptomatic patients with PVT, the results of the first-line imaging tool, transthoracic echocardiography, may be inconclusive in terms of illustrating the thrombus, which is necessary in order to select the proper treatment option. Hence, a differential diagnosis based on clinical presentation may be challenging, and multimodality imaging, including echocardiography, cine fluoroscopy, and cardiac computed tomography, is usually required to distinguish between PVT and other prosthesis-related pathologies, such as pannus, vegetation, and prosthesis-patient mismatch.

A 58-year-old man with a left ventricular assist device (LVAD), which had been implanted 1 year earlier, presented with rest dyspnea. Moderate to severe aortic regurgitation (AR), pre-postcapillary pulmonary hypertension, modarete right ventricular (RV) failure, and low cardiac output were observed at presentation. Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) was performed to treat the AR and a self-expandable aortic valve was implanted.

Objective: The prognostic nutritional index (PNI), based on serum albumin and lymphocyte concentration, is an inflammation-based nutritional score that has been shown to be a prognostic determinant in several populations. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of PNI on mortality in patients with infective endocarditis (IE).

Methods: A total of 131 patients with IE were enrolled in this retrospective study.

Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the validity of automated quantitative and semiquantitative visual analysis of total perfusion deficit (TPD) using the IQ SPECT gamma camera system compared to conventional coronary angiographically detected significant coronary artery disease (CAD).

Methods: The study included patients with suspected CAD who underwent myocardial perfusion single photon emission computed tomography and conventional coronary angiography. The summed stress score (SSS), summed rest score (SRS), and summed difference score (SDS) (semiquantitative visual analysis results) were assessed using a 5-point scale in a standard 17-segment model, and TPD (stress, rest, and ischemic TPD) was quantified using automated software.

The mitral-aortic intervalvular fibrosa (MAIVF) is a fibrous, avascular region between the anterior leaflet of the mitral valve and noncoronary cusp of the aortic valve. This makes MAIVF vulnerable to injury and infection; thus pseudoaneurysm may develop. The pseudoaneurysm can cause compression to coronary arteries which causes angina or pulmonary artery resulting in pulmonary hypertension.

Pregnancy is associated with an increased risk of valve thrombosis in patients with a mechanical prosthetic heart valve. The administration of low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) with regular anti-factor Xa assessment is a recommended treatment modality for these patients. Presently described are 3 cases of therapy with LMWH during pregnancy.

Coronary fistulae may lead to coronary steal phenomenon or considerable volume overload on the cardiac chambers, causing significant hemodynamic problems. Coronary fistulae can be closed either surgically or percutaneously. Percutaneous closure is frequently performed with coil embolization or a vascular plug.

Objective: Esophagojejunal anastomotic leakages, which occur in the reconstruction procedures performed after total or proximal gastrectomy, still account for one of the most significant causes of morbidity and mortality in spite of the developments seen in the perioperative management and surgical techniques in gastric cancer surgery. The aim of the presentstudy was to ascertain the risk factors for Esophagojejunal anastomotic leakages.

Materialand Methods: A total of 80 patients with gastric cancer, who had total gastrectomy + D2 lymph node dissection and Esophagojejunal anastomotic between January 2013 and December 2016, were retrospectively evaluated.

Background: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between prodromal angina (PA) with neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI).

Methods: The study group included 145 patients with STEMI who underwent emergency coronary angiography (CA) within 24hours of symptom onset. Data were collected regarding whether patients had experienced PA before acute myocardial infarction.

Background: We aimed to assess atrial electromechanical delay (AEMD) in patients who had undergone heart transplantation.

Methods: A total of 32 patients who underwent biatrial anastomosis heart transplantation (24 men, 8 women; mean age: 42±11 years) and 30 healthy volunteers (20 men, 10 women; mean age: 36±13 years) were included in the study. Atrial electromechanical coupling (PA), intra-AEMD, and inter-AEMD were measured.

Background: The aims of this study were to examine the ophthalmic artery flow changes in patients with obstructive carotid artery disease, evaluate the orbital blood flow changes after carotid artery stenting and assess the safety of carotid stenting procedure by using transorbital colour and spectral Doppler sonography.

Methods: Thirty-one consecutive patients scheduled for carotid stenting with severe internal carotid artery stenosis (>60%; the study group) and 30 control subjects were included. Ophthalmic artery (OA) Doppler sonography was performed in the control group and study group before and after stenting.
