The purpose of this investigation was to investigate whether there was an association between the Naples prognostic score and the development of acute kidney injury (AKI) in ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients following primary percutaneous coronary intervention (pPCI). The study comprised 2901 consecutive STEMI patients who had pPCI. For each patient, the Naples prognostic score was determined.

Background: Premature ventricular complex (PVC) is a frequent finding in the general population. The atrial conduction time (ACT) is the period between the electrocardiographic P wave and the atrial mechanical contraction, and its prolongation indicates an atrial electromechanical delay (EMD). In our study, we compared atrial conduction parameters by echocardiographic methods between patients with frequent PVC and healthy control subjects.

Background: This study aims to investigate the effects of severe functional mitral regurgitation on the parameters that reflect right ventricular function such as tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion and right ventricular stroke work index in potential heart transplant recipients.
Methods: Between January 2015 and January 2017, a total of 282 consecutive patients (250 males, 32 females; mean age: 46±10 years; range, 18 to 66 years) with advanced heart failure who were referred for heart transplantation were retrospectively analyzed. The coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19)-related myocardial injury is an increasingly recognized complication and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has become the most commonly used non-invasive imaging technique for myocardial involvement. This study aims to assess myocardial structure by T2*-mapping which is a non-invasive gold-standard imaging tool for the assessment of cardiac iron deposition in patients with COVID-19 pneumonia without significant cardiac symptoms. Twenty-five patients with COVID-19 pneumonia and 20 healthy subjects were prospectively enrolled.

Background: Premature ventricular contraction (PVC) is a frequent kind of arrhythmia that affects around 1% of the general population. While PVC most frequently impairs ventricular function in structurally normal heart, retrograde ventriculo-atrial conduction can occur in people with PVC. These retrograde atrial activations may mimic pulmonary vein-derived atrial ectopies.

Objective: Data related to the existence of left ventricular (LV) abnormalities in normal functional bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) disease is scarce. In addition, the impact of afterload and the involved mechanisms are unclear. In this work, we study the relationship between LV function assessed with myocardial work index (MWI) and arterial stiffness in a cohort of normal functioning BAV patients.

Introduction: We sought to evaluate secondary infections (SIs) in patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) for COVID-19 with respect to incidence, causative pathogens, and clinical outcomes.
Methodology: In this two-centre retrospective study, we analysed 146 patients (96 males, 50 females; median age, 64 years) admitted to the ICU with COVID-19 between March 26 and December 31, 2020. Inclusion criteria were an ICU admission for at least 48 hours and age beyond 18 years.

Diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia and smoking are associated with coronary artery disease and ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). However, patients without any classic risk factors have a higher mortality rate in the post-STEMI period. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between in-hospital mortality and creatinine/albumin ratio in patients with STEMI without modifiable risk factors.

Objective: Discontinuation of metformin treatment is a frequently used approach in clinical practice in diabetic ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction patients using metformin in order to reduce the risk of contrast-induced acute kidney injury. There is insufficient evidence in the literature to support this approach. The aim of this study is to determine whether the risk of contrast-induced acute kidney injury is different in diabetic ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction patients using metformin compared to those not taking metformin.

A 61-year-old male presented to emergency department with symptoms of shortness of breath, palpitations, and night sweats. We performed bedside transthoracic echocardiography which showed shunt from the left ventricle to the right atrium in systole with color Doppler examination. Gerbode-type ventricular septal defect and an image of a fibrillar, mobile mass compatible with vegetation was observed just above the tricuspid valve.

Objective: Parallel to the aging of the world population, the complexity of patients with cardiac problems has increased, especially in intensive cardiology care units, and the importance of multidisciplinary care has become more evident. The aim of this study was to analyze the clinical characteristics and gender-related differences of patients hospitalized in a large intensive cardiology care unit.
Methods: This single-center, retrospective, cross-sectional study includes all hospitalizations in a large intensive cardiology care unit between January 2016 and March 2021.

Background: The role of eosinophils in thrombotic processes is well known, and the prognostic value of eosinophil to monocyte ratio had been determined in patients with ST elevated myocardial infarction and acute ischemic stroke in recent studies. We aimed to evaluate the impact of the eosinophil-to-monocyte ratio on short- and long-term allcause mortality in patients with pulmonary embolism, which is another clinical condition closely related to the thrombotic pathway.
Methods: In this study, a total of 212 retrospectively evaluated patients with intermediate-high risk and high-risk pulmonary embolism who underwent catheter-directed therapies with ultrasound-assisted thrombolysis or rheolytic thrombectomy (Angiojet©) and intravenous thrombolytic treatment were included.

Objective: Multidisciplinary patient blood management practices reduce costs of blood products and transfusion-related complications in hospitals. Hospital costs are high in pediatric cardiac surgery patients because high hematocrit levels are usually needed; the need for blood products is high due to complex and long surgical procedures; the length of stay in the intensive care unit (ICU) is long, and the use of treatment modalities such as dialysis and ECMO is common in this patient population.
Methods: In this retrospective study, we investigated the effects of the use of the multidisciplinary patient blood management protocols on the use of blood products and associated costs by comparing the outcomes of the protocol implemented in the year 2019 to the blood product use and costs of the previous year.

Data from Turkey revealed that atrial fibrillation patient percentage under adequate anti- coagulation in Turkey is less than that in other countries due to multiple parameters such as treatment adherence problems, failure to follow guideline recommendations, negative perspective on the use of new drugs, drug costs, and payment conditions. The aim of this article is to provide physicians with a compiled resource that focuses on the differences between non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants and heterogeneity of atrial fibrilla- tion patients by reviewing the global and national data from a multidisciplinary perspective and provide guidance on the choice of non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants in atrial fibrillation patients. A gastroenterologist, 2 neurologists, and 11 cardiologists from university and training and research hospitals in Turkey who are experienced in atrial fibrillation and non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulant treatments gathered in 3 separate meetings to identify the review topics and evaluate the outcomes of the systematic literature search.

Ceftazidime-avibactam exhibits good in vitro activity against carbapenem resistant Klebsiella carrying OXA-48-like enzymes. We tested two hundred unique carbapenem resistant Klebsiella blood stream isolates (71% with single OXA-48-like carbapenemases, including OXA-48, n = 62; OXA-232, n = 57; OXA-244, n = 17; OXA-181, n = 5) that were collected as part of a multicentre study against ceftazidime-avibactam using Etest (bioMérieux, Marcyl'Étoile, France), 10/4 μg disc (Thermo Fisher) and Sensititre Gram Negative EURGNCOL Plates (Lyophilized panels, Sensititre, Thermo Fisher) with the aim of comparing the performances of the Etest and disc to that of Sensititre. Ceftazidime-avibactam MIC was 2/>16 mg/L for the entire collection and was 2/4 mg/L for single OXA-48-like producers.
