Prolactin and oxytocin: potential targets for migraine treatment.

J Headache Pain

March 2023

Division of Vascular Medicine and Pharmacology, Department of Internal Medicine, Erasmus University Medical Center, Rotterdam, The Netherlands.

Article Synopsis
  • Migraine is a complex neurovascular disorder influenced by inflammatory mediators and sex steroid hormone fluctuations, which contribute to the differing impacts on men and women.
  • The hormones prolactin and oxytocin play significant roles in the pathophysiology of migraines; prolactin has a pronociceptive (pain-enhancing) effect while oxytocin exhibits an antinociceptive (pain-reducing) effect.
  • Effective migraine treatments may involve targeting these hormones: blocking prolactin's effects using receptor antagonists and enhancing oxytocin's effects through methods like intranasal administration, while also recognizing the unique interactions with estrogen and other pain-related pathways.

Congenital hydrocephalus (CH), characterized by enlarged brain ventricles, is considered a disease of excessive cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) accumulation and thereby treated with neurosurgical CSF diversion with high morbidity and failure rates. The poor neurodevelopmental outcomes and persistence of ventriculomegaly in some post-surgical patients highlight our limited knowledge of disease mechanisms. Through whole-exome sequencing of 381 patients (232 trios) with sporadic, neurosurgically treated CH, we found that damaging de novo mutations account for >17% of cases, with five different genes exhibiting a significant de novo mutation burden.

Shoelace Technique Plus Negative-Pressure Wound Therapy Closure in Fasciotomy Wounds.

Adv Skin Wound Care

September 2020

Engin Eceviz, MD, is Assistant Professor, University of Health Sciences, Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, Kartal Dr Lütfi Kirdar Research and Training Hospital, İstanbul, Turkey. Hüseyin Bilgehan Çevik, MD, is Assistant Professor, University of Health Sciences, Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, Dişkapi Yildirim Beyazit Training and Research Hospital, Ankara. The authors have disclosed no financial relationships related to this article. Submitted June 21, 2019; accepted in revised form October 31, 2019.

Background: Fasciotomy incision closure is often performed with skin grafts that can lead to cosmetic and functional complications after surgical intervention. Because fasciotomy incisions do not result in skin loss, the authors hypothesized that better closure can be achieved by reducing tissue edema with negative-pressure wound therapy (NPWT) and reducing stress on the skin with the shoelace surgical technique.

Methods: This 1-year prospective study included eight patients with acute compartment syndrome after extremity fractures and/or blunt injuries.
