Retroperitoneal ectopic pregnancy is an uncommon condition in clinical practice, often associated with misdiagnosis and unconventional treatment. Delayed interventions can lead to poor prognosis and sometimes catastrophic situations. Due to the limited number of reported cases in the literature, an established treatment protocol has yet to be introduced.

Association Between Maternal Smoking, Isolated Proteinuria During Pregnancy and Preterm Birth: A Finnish Registry Analysis.

Introduction: Smoking during pregnancy (SDP) seems to paradoxically decrease the likelihood of preeclampsia. We aimed to investigate the association between smoking and isolated proteinuria during pregnancy. In addition, we investigated the associations and potential interaction between smoking and proteinuria on the risk for preterm birth.

Neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) in lupus nephritis and beyond.

Objectives: To study neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) levels in peripheral blood in SLE, and to propose a mechanism by which neutrophils secrete NGAL on stimulation with immune complexes (IC).

Methods: NGAL was measured by ELISA in two independent Swedish SLE cohorts acting as exploratory and validation cohort (n=124 and n=308, respectively), disease controls (n=38) and healthy controls (n=77). NGAL levels were measured in supernatant from IC-stimulated neutrophils in the presence or absence of a toll-like receptor 8 inhibitor (TLR8i).

Navigating the complexity of emergency department care coordination: A qualitative exploration of adaptive strategies using a tabletop sandbox simulation.

Emergency departments accommodate high-acuity patients in complex, high risk environments with high variability in patient flow and resource availability. Strategies for enabling adaptive capacity are necessary for adjusting activities in response to the variability of overall workload and individual patient acuity. This study aims to identify and describe the strategies used by lead-nurses to inform recommendations for training and education.

However, there were not any studies that approached the design alone to evaluate whether sleeve-in-sleeve or sleeve-on-drill design provided most accuracy implant position. The purpose of this study was to investigate the precision of implant placement with sleeve-in-sleeve and sleeve-on-drill static computer assisted implant surgery (sCAIS) designs.

Implant position accuracy using dynamic computer-assisted implant surgery (CAIS) combined with augmented reality: A randomized controlled clinical trial.

Background/purpose: Computer-assisted implant surgery (CAIS) is increasingly performed to reduce deviations in implant position. Dynamic CAIS or navigation systems provide instant display of implant drilling instruments and patient positions directly on the computer monitor. Augmented reality (AR) technology allows operators to visualize real-time information projected onto the lenses of AR glasses.

Nonneutralizing antibodies in Nordic persons with moderate hemophilia A and B (the MoHem study).

Background: The impact of nonneutralizing antibodies (NNAs) in moderate hemophilia is elusive.

Objectives: To explore the presence of NNAs in Nordic persons with moderate hemophilia A (MHA) and B (MHB) in relation to treatment modality, clinical outcome, history of inhibitor, and the corresponding factor VIII (FVIII)/factor IX (FIX) gene mutation.

Methods: A cross-sectional multicenter study covering persons with MHA and MHB in Sweden, Finland, and Norway.

Nutritional epidemiology aims to link dietary exposures to chronic disease, but the instruments for evaluating dietary intake are inaccurate. One way to identify unreliable data and the sources of errors is to compare estimated intakes with the total energy expenditure (TEE). In this study, we used the International Atomic Energy Agency Doubly Labeled Water Database to derive a predictive equation for TEE using 6,497 measures of TEE in individuals aged 4 to 96 years.

The Société de Pathologie Infectieuse de Langue Française released in 2024 a new national recommendation for clinical practice on the prevention and management of varicella zoster virus (VZV) infection during pregnancy and the perinatal period. The previous recommendation was issued in 1998, at a time of anti-VZV immunoglobulins shortage; it has hence become obsolete. This recommendation is a formalized expert consensus focusing on infectious diseases management; it is drawn up by a multidisciplinary working group (infectiologists, obstetricians, pediatricians, microbiologists, midwives, hygienists).

Association between endostatin and mortality in patients with acute dyspnoea, with or without congestive heart failure: a single-centre, prospective, observational study.

Objective: The aim of this study was to assess associations between endostatin levels and short-term mortality in unsorted acute hospitalised dyspnoea patients with or without congestive heart failure (CHF), adjusted for common cardiovascular risk factors.

Design, Setting And Participants: In this prospective observational study, 723 hospitalised patients who visited the emergency department at Skåne University Hospital, Sweden, between 2013 and 2018 were included. Of these, 276 had a history of CHF.

Time-to-event data are very common in medical applications. Regression models have been developed on such data especially in the field of survival analysis. Kernels are used to handle even more complicated and enormous quantities of medical data by injecting non-linearity into linear models.

Intradermal lymphocyte therapy: A promising treatment for recurrent pregnancy loss in patients without anti-TPO antibodies.

Background: Recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL) remains a complex and challenging reproductive issue often associated with immunological abnormalities. This study investigates the immunomodulatory effects of intradermal lymphocyte therapy in RPL patients, exploring cellular, molecular, and cytokine changes, with specific attention to individuals with positive anti-thyroid peroxidase antibodies (Anti-TPO).

Methods: The study included 105 patients with RPL, divided into Anti-TPO positive RPL patients (n = 25), Anti-TPO negative RPL patients (n = 38), and RPL patients without lymphocyte immunotherapy (LIT) (n = 42).

Ethnicity-specific patterns of epigenetic age acceleration in rheumatoid arthritis.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an age-related chronic inflammatory disease which may include accelerated biological ageing processes in its pathogenesis. To determine if increased biological age is associated with risk of RA and/or is present once disease is established. We used DNA methylation to compare biological age (epigenetic age) of immune cells in adults at risk of RA and those with confirmed RA, including twins discordant for RA.

Unveiling the role of artificial intelligence applied to clear aligner therapy: A scoping review.

Objectives: To conduct a scoping review on the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in clear aligner therapy and to assess the extent of AI integration and automation in orthodontic software currently available to orthodontists.

Data And Sources: A systematic electronic literature search was performed in the following databases: PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and Scopus. Also, grey literature resources up to March 2024 were reviewed.

Paediatric falls: An analysis of patterns of injury and associated mortality in urban India.

Background: Falls are some of the most common childhood injuries. However, for vulnerable children in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) such as India, mortality from a fall is nearly three times that of high-income countries. Despite fall being a leading cause of paediatric injury, detailed data from LMICs remain sparse.

The reproductive tract microbiome in women with polycystic ovary syndrome and across different menstrual cycle phases.

Study Question: Do polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), menstrual cycle phases, and ovulatory status affect reproductive tract (RT) microbiome profiles?

Summary Answer: We identified microbial features associated with menstrual cycle phases in the upper and lower RT microbiome, but only two specific differences in the upper RT according to PCOS status.

What Is Known Already: The vaginal and uterine microbiome profiles vary throughout the menstrual cycle. Studies have reported alterations in the vaginal microbiome among women diagnosed with PCOS.

Genome-wide association study of varenicline-aided smoking cessation.

Introduction: Varenicline is an α4β2 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor partial agonist with the highest therapeutic efficacy of any pharmacological smoking cessation aid and a 12-month cessation rate of 26%. Genetic variation may be associated with varenicline response, but to date no genome-wide association studies of varenicline response have been published.

Methods: In this study, we investigated the genetic contribution to varenicline effectiveness using two electronic health record-derived phenotypes.
