Background: Injury (shedding) of the endothelial glycocalyx layer, which alters local blood flow and microvascular permeability, is assessed by measuring components of this layer in circulating blood. The influence of renal function on their concentrations is unknown.
Methods: Plasma and urine concentrations of three shedding products (syndecan-1, hyaluronic acid, and heparan sulfate) and creatinine were measured over 5 hours in 15 healthy volunteers and 15 postoperative patients; this guaranteed a spread of kidney functions.

Objectives: Although dehydration can affect mental and physical health, there is no clear, consistent, and reproducible diagnostic tool for this condition in older people. We applied multiple methods to detect dehydration with the aim of assessing the value of using urine analysis for this purpose.
Design: Nonrandomized cohort study.

Background: Little is known about the turnover of crystalloid fluids infused in patients with acute systemic inflammation. We hypothesised that systemic inflammation would be associated with altered distribution and elimination of Ringer's lactate solution (volume kinetics).
Methods: Ringer's lactate solution (15 ml kg) was infused intravenously over 35 min in patients undergoing cholecystectomy (n=20) or appendectomy (n=20) starting before induction of general anaesthesia.

Guidelines for infusion fluid therapy rarely take into account that adverse effects occur in a dose-dependent fashion. Adverse effects of crystalloid fluids are related to their preferential distribution to the interstitium of the subcutis, the gut, and the lungs. The gastrointestinal recovery time is prolonged by 2 days when more than 2 litres is administered.

Purpose: This study compared the relationship between surface electromyographic (EMG) activity and isometric force of m. quadriceps femoris (QF) in the single-joint knee extension (KE) and the multi-joint leg press (LP) exercises.
Methods: Nine healthy men performed unilateral actions at a knee angle of 90 degrees at 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100% of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC).
