Hearing and speech impairment at age 4 and risk of later non-affective psychosis.

Psychol Med

October 2013

Division of Public Health Epidemiology, Department of Public Health Sciences, Karolinska Institutet Norrbacka, Stockholm, Sweden.

Background: Schizophrenia often becomes manifest in late adolescence and young adulthood but deviations in physical and behavioural development may already be present in childhood. We investigated the relationship between hearing impairment (measured with audiometry) and speech impairment (broadly defined) at age 4 years and adult risk of non-affective psychosis.

Method: We performed a population-based, case–control study in Sweden with 105 cases of schizophrenia or other non-affective psychoses and 213 controls matched for sex, date and place of birth.

Social risk or genetic liability for psychosis? A study of children born in Sweden and reared by adoptive parents.

Am J Psychiatry

October 2010

Division of Public Health Epidemiology, Department of Public Health Sciences, Karolinska Institutet Norrbacka, Floor 7, 171 76, Stockholm, Sweden.

Objective: Recent studies suggest a role for social factors during childhood in the later development of schizophrenia. Since social conditions in childhood are closely related to parental psychiatric illness, there is a need to disentangle how genes and social environmental factors interact.

Method: A total of 13,163 children born in Sweden between 1955 and 1984 and reared in Swedish adoptive families were linked to the National Patient Register until 2006 regarding admissions for non-affective psychoses, including schizophrenia.
