Aim: To investigate fasting metabolism in children with very long-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency (VLCADD) and medium-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency (MCADD) using microdialysis technique.
Methods: Twelve patients (7 with VLCADD, 5 with MCADD, mean age 4.9 years, 10/12 diagnosed via newborn screening) were recruited for investigation in connection to clinical fasting examinations at the Karolinska University Hospital (between 2015 and 2024).

Objectives: To assess the effect of treatment on haemostatic parameters in patients with early rheumatoid arthritis (RA).
Methods: Patients with newly diagnosed RA started methotrexate and were randomised to additional conventional treatment, certolizumab pegol, abatacept or tocilizumab. Several biomarkers for haemostasis were analysed including parameters of the two global haemostatic assays-overall haemostatic potential (OHP) and endogenous thrombin potential (ETP), as well as single haemostatic factors-fibrinogen, prothrombin fragment 1+2 (F1+2), D-dimer, thrombin activatable fibrinolysis inhibitor (TAFI) and clot lysis time (CLT) in 24 patients at baseline, 12 and 24 weeks after the start of the treatment.

The genome of most bunyaviruses is divided over three (S, M, and L) single-stranded RNA segments of negative polarity. The three viral RNA segments are essential to establish a productive infection. RNA fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) enables the detection, localization, and quantification of RNA molecules at single-molecule resolution.

Background And Aims: Anatomical imaging alone of coronary atherosclerotic plaques is insufficient to identify risk of future adverse events and guide management of non-culprit lesions. Low endothelial shear stress (ESS) and high plaque structural stress (PSS) are associated with events, but individually their predictive value is insufficient for risk prediction. We determined whether combining multiple complementary, biomechanical and anatomical plaque characteristics improves outcome prediction sufficiently to inform clinical decision-making.

Mechanical loading enhances bone strength and counteracts arthritis-induced inflammation-mediated bone loss in female mice. It is unknown whether nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs; eg, COX-2 inhibitors) can reduce inflammation without affecting the loading-associated bone formation in male mice. The aim of this study was to investigate if loading combined with a COX-2 inhibitor (NS-398) could prevent arthritis-induced bone loss and inflammation in male mice.

Aims: Previous studies on the cost-effectiveness of screening for atrial fibrillation (AF) are based on assumptions of long-term clinical effects. The STROKESTOP study, which randomised 27 975 persons aged 75/76 years into a screening invitation group and a control group, has a median follow-up time of 6.9 years.

Sinus tachycardia (ST) is ubiquitous, but its presence outside of normal physiological triggers in otherwise healthy individuals remains a commonly encountered phenomenon in medical practice. In many cases, ST can be readily explained by a current medical condition that precipitates an increase in the sinus rate, but ST at rest without physiological triggers may also represent a spectrum of normal. In other cases, ST may not have an easily explainable cause but may represent serious underlying pathology and can be associated with intolerable symptoms.

Very long-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency (VLCADD) is a recessive disorder of fatty acid beta-oxidation with variable phenotype. Patients may present during the neonatal period with lethal multi-organ failure or during adulthood with a myopathic phenotype. VLCADD is included in the Swedish newborn screening (NBS) program since 2010.

Objective: To assess the current medical practice in Europe regarding prenatal dexamethasone (Pdex) treatment of congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) due to 21-hydroxylase deficiency.
Design And Methods: A questionnaire was designed and distributed, including 17 questions collecting quantitative and qualitative data. Thirty-six medical centres from 14 European countries responded and 30 out of 36 centres were reference centres of the European Reference Network on Rare Endocrine Conditions, EndoERN.

Background: The microvasculature is a target organ for the early manifestations of cardiovascular disease. Therefore, a better understanding of the prostaglandin system and characterising the effects of mPGES-1 inhibition and concomitant reduction of PGE in vascular beds are of interest.
Experimental Approach: The effects of mPGES-1 inhibition on constriction and relaxation of resistance arteries (diameter: 100-400 μm) from patients with end stage kidney disease (ESKD) and controls (Non-ESKD) were studied using wire-myography in combination with immunological and mass-spectrometry based analyses.
Rotational deformities following intramedullary (IM) nailing of tibia has a reported incidence of as high as 20%. Common techniques to measure deformities following IM nailing of tibia are either based on clinical assessment, plain X-rays or Computed Tomography (CT) comparing the treated leg with the uninjured contralateral side. All these techniques are based on examiners manual calculation inherently subject to bias.

A reduced prevalence of a thoracic aortic aneurysm (thoracic AA) is observed in type 2 diabetes (T2D). Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1)/GLP-1-based anti-diabetic therapy has indicated protective effects in thoracic AA and regulates the processes controlling the vascular tissue expression of Syndecan-1 (Sdc-1). Sdc-1 expression on macrophages infiltrating the aortic tissue contributes to a counter-regulatory response to thoracic AA formation in animal models through the interplay with inflammation/proteolytic activity.

Background: High rates of hospitalization in dialysis patients impose an increasing healthcare burden. We explored and compared hospital admission rates among patients starting hemodialysis (HD) and peritoneal dialysis (PD), and investigated causes of admission/readmission in search of potentially preventable risks.
Methods: Observational study recruiting 8902 patients (3101 on PD) who started maintenance dialysis in Sweden between 2006 and 2016 and were followed-up for 2 years.

WHO/IUIS Allergen Nomenclature Sub-Committee.
Until recently, glycan epitopes have not been documented by the WHO/IUIS Allergen Nomenclature Sub-Committee. This was in part due to scarce or incomplete information on these oligosaccharides, but also due to the widely held opinion that IgE to these epitopes had little or no relevance to allergic symptoms. Most IgE-binding glycans recognized up to 2008 were considered to be "classical" cross-reactive carbohydrate determinants (CCD) that occur in insects, some helminths and throughout the plant kingdom.
