Studies of internet-delivered cognitive behavioral therapy (ICBT) have documented its efficacy for pediatric Functional Abdominal Pain Disorders (FAPDs), but few have detailed how adolescents experience this. We investigated the lived symptom experiences of eight adolescents (age 13-17 years) with FAPDs, who had received ICBT. Semi-structured interviews were conducted using photo-elicitation, and analyzed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, identifying three main themes; "Power of thoughts" describes the impact of thoughts on understanding symptoms and self.

Background: OSU6162, a monoamine stabilizer, has demonstrated efficacy in reducing alcohol and anxiety-related behaviors in preclinical settings. In a previous randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial involving patients with alcohol dependence (AD), OSU6162 significantly reduced craving for alcohol but did not alter drinking behaviors. This retrospective secondary analysis explores whether genetic predispositions related to AD and associated traits might influence the response to OSU6162 treatment in original trial participants.

Article Synopsis
  • Rapid diagnosis and intervention are crucial for sepsis outcomes, but challenges arise due to varying patient symptoms and characteristics.
  • Researchers evaluated the early characteristics of Mucosal-associated invariant T (MAIT) cells in sepsis patients in the emergency department, discovering distinct activation profiles between sepsis and non-sepsis groups.
  • Findings showed that specific MAIT cell characteristics, such as high CD69 expression, were linked to sepsis severity and correlated with plasma cytokine levels, indicating potential for early identification and prognosis of sepsis in patients.

Background: Infants vary significantly in the way they process and respond to sensory stimuli, and altered sensory processing has been reported among infants later diagnosed with autism. Previous work with adolescents and adults suggests that variability in sensory processing may have a strong genetic basis. Yet, little is known about the etiological factors influencing sensory differences in infancy, when brain circuits supporting social and non-social cognition are sculpted and learning about the world via sensory input largely occurs in interaction with caregivers.

Background: Autistic individuals often receive psychiatric diagnoses prior to their autism diagnosis. It remains unclear to what extent autistic females and males differ in their likelihood of receiving psychiatric diagnoses prior to their autism diagnosis and continue seeking care for them after an autism diagnosis.

Methods: In a nationwide cohort of all individuals born in Sweden 1990-2015 with a clinical autism diagnosis (N = 72,331, n = 24,110), we used linear and logistic regression to estimate the association between sex and (a) psychiatric diagnoses before autism diagnosis, including time trends by autism diagnosis year (2010-2020), (b) autism diagnosis age in those with preceding diagnoses, (c) stability of preceding diagnoses (defined as continued care utilization indicated through diagnosis or medication in the 5 years following autism diagnosis).

Taboo obsessions are ego-dystonic, recurrent, and intrusive thoughts involving aggressive, sexual and/or religious themes, which are common in individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). These symptoms are often challenging to treat with traditional, exposure-based approaches. Our research group has developed and successfully piloted an Internet-delivered intervention based on the cognitive framework of taboo obsessions (I-CT).

Mandatory verses voluntary self-tests for new online casino customers: effect on engagement, quality, gambling behavior and use of responsible gambling measures.

Harm Reduct J

February 2025

Centre for Psychiatry Research, Department of Clinical Neuroscience, Karolinska Institutet & Stockholm Health Care Services, Region Stockholm, Norra Stationsgatan 69, 113 64, Stockholm, Sweden.

Background: To combat the public health concern that is problem gambling, gambling operators are increasingly being required by legislation to exercise a duty of care obligation, including the provision of Responsible Gambling (RG) tools. Self-test assessments have long been a popular RG tool implemented by many operators, yet there has been scant empirical research on self-tests, including on how the method of delivery impacts engagement, quality, and subsequent gambling behavior. The main objective of the current study was to examine if the level of voluntariness to perform a self-test moderated these key outcomes.
