Auto-transplant of cryopreserved ovarian tissue in leukemia patients carries a risk to reintroduce malignant cells. Maturation of ovarian follicles in vitro is a promising strategy to overcome the leukemic cell contamination. A case of serrated adenomatous polyp found in a cholecystectomy specimen is reported. The adenoma was built with mucosal crypts exhibiting unlocked serrations lined with up to high-grade dysplastic cells. A desmoplastic sclerotic tissue having multiple stromal hubs with branched thin spokes replaced the subjacent lamina propia, muscularis mucosae, and submucosa.

Aims: Maspin, a 42-kDa serine proteinase inhibitor, is a tumor suppressor protein that stimulates apoptosis and inhibits motility, invasion and cancer metastasis. The cells that line the mucosa of the human gastrointestinal tract (GI, that is, oral cavity, oesophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, and rectum) are constantly challenged by adverse micro-environmental factors, such as different pH, enzymes, and bacterial flora. With exception of the oral cavity, these microenvironments also contain remnant cocktails of secreted enzymes and bacteria from upper organs along the tract. The density of the GI bacteria varies, from 103/mL near the gastric outlet, to 1010/mL at the ileocecal valve, to 1011 to 1012/mL in the colon.

A semi-automated method for quantification of budesonide in human plasma was developed, validated, and applied for high-volume analysis of samples in connection with a pharmacokinetic study. Protein and phospholipid removal was performed using an Ostro 96-well filter plate and subsequently combined with C18 solid-phase extraction on a Hamilton Microlab STARlet automation robot. The final extracts were evaporated to dryness and redissolved in 20% acetonitrile/water.

The onset of invasion in nonpolypoid adenomas may occur without changes in the shape or the size of the lesion. In experimental animals, some colonotropic carcinogens induce polypoid and nonpolypoid neoplasias and others induce polypoid neoplasias exclusively.

Fabry disease is an inherited (X-linked) lysosomal storage disorder caused by deficiency of α-galactosidase A, leading to accumulation of globotriaosylceramide in various tissues. A 57-year-old male with a family history and laboratory findings of Fabry disease, was consulted for severe abdominal pain, undulating pyrexia, weight loss and diarrhea. The tentative clinical diagnosis of Crohn's ileitis was supported at computed tomographic examination, at laparotomy and at inspection of the resected ileal segment.

Background: The hygiene hypothesis states that children exposed to higher loads of microbes such as farmers' children suffer less from allergies later in life. Several immunological mechanisms underpinning the hygiene hypothesis have been proposed such as a shift in T helper cell balance, T regulatory cell activity, or immune regulatory mechanisms induced by the innate immunity.

Under normal conditions, the colorectal mucosa exhibits small numbers of scattered lymphocytes and plasma cells in the lamina propria and only few mucosal lymphoid aggregates (MLAs). In Crohn's colitis, the number of lymphocytes and plasma cells in the lamina propria and of MLA is substantially increased. In addition, multiple lymphoid aggregates are newly formed in the submucosa (submucosal lymphoid aggregate (SLA)) and deeper.

The overwhelming majority of colorectal carcinomas evolve in GALT-free mucosal areas and very rarely in GALT aggregates. Remarkably, the colonic mucosa in patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) displays a high number of newly formed GALT-aggregates.

Paucity of synaptophysin-expressing cells in Barrett's mucosa.

Aims: To assess synaptophysin expression in columnar-lined oesophageal mucosa showing either goblet cells, known as intestinal metaplasia, or with accompanying oxyntic glands or pyloric glands.

Methods And Results: Of 159 biopsies, 53 were oesophageal (19 had intestinal metaplasia, 13 oxyntic glands, and 21 pyloric glands), 77 gastric (12 had goblet cells and 27 no goblet cells) and 29 duodenal. Synaptophysin-positive goblet cells were found in all biopsies from the normal duodenum, in 53% of the oesophageal biopsies showing intestinal metaplasia, but only in 8% of gastric biopsies showing intestinal metaplasia.

Opiates comprise a class of abused drugs that is of primary interest in clinical and forensic urine drug testing. Determination of heroin, codeine, or a multi-drug ingestion is complicated since both heroin and codeine can lead to urinary excretion of free and conjugated morphine. Liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) offers advantage over gas chromatography-mass spectrometry by simplifying sample preparation but increases the number of analytes.

Serrated adenoma of the stomach: Case report and literature review.

Gastric serrated adenomas are histologically characterized by protruding glands with lateral saw tooth-like indentations lined with stratified dysplastic cells containing abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm. Since the first case of gastric serrated adenoma found in 2001, 18 additional cases have been reported. Gastric serrated adenomas have a particular proclivity to progress to invasive carcinoma; 75% or 15 of the 20 cases now in record - including the present one - exhibited invasive carcinoma.
