Four novel Co(II) coordination compounds 1-4 of the general formula [Co(L)][Co(NCY)]·CHCN (where L are tridentate ligands L1 = 2,6-bis(1-hexyl-1-benzimidazol-2-yl)pyridine for 1 and 2; L2 = 2,6-bis(1-octyl-1-benzimidazol-2-yl)pyridine for 3; L3 = 2,6-bis(1-dodecyl-1-benzimidazol-2-yl)pyridine for 4, Y = O for 1, 3, and 4 and Y = S for 2; = 0 for 1 and 3, = 0.5 for 2 and = 2 for 4) were prepared and characterised. The molecular structures of all four compounds consist of the hexacoordinate complex cation [Co(L)] and tetracoordinate complex anion [Co(NCY)], with distorted octahedral and tetrahedral symmetry of coordination polyhedra, respectively.

The adhesion of cells to the extracellular matrix engages cell surface receptors such as integrins, proteoglycans and other types of cell adhesion molecules such as CD44. To closely examine the determinants of cell adhesion, herein we describe the generation of high-density peptide arrays and test the growth of cells on these multifunctionalized surfaces. The peptide library used consists of over 11,000 different sequences, either random or derived from existing proteins.

Understanding the intricate relationship between molecular architecture and function underpins most challenges at the forefront of chemical innovation. Bond-forming reactions are particularly influenced by the topology of a chemical structure, both on small molecule scale and in larger macromolecular frameworks. Herein, we elucidate the impact that molecular architecture has on the photo-induced cyclisations of a series of monodisperse macromolecules with defined spacers between photodimerisable moieties, and examine the relationship between propensity for intramolecular cyclisation and intermolecular network formation.

The dichotomous classification of self-talk statements into goal-directed as a more controlled type of self-talk and spontaneous as a more uncontrolled type of self-talk might be an oversimplification. To address this issue, two studies were conducted aiming to explore the idea that the distinction between the two self-talk types should rather be proportional and not mutually exclusive. The development of cost-efficient, long-lifespan, and all-climate sodium-ion batteries is of great importance for advancing large-scale energy storage but is plagued by the lack of suitable cathode materials. Here, we report low-cost Na-rich Mn-based Prussian blue analogues with superior rate capability and ultralong cycling stability over 10,000 cycles via structural optimization with electrochemically inert Ni atoms. Their thermal stability, all-climate properties, and potential in full cells are investigated in detail.

Mass spectroscopy (MS) is a robust technique for polymer characterization, and it can provide the chemical fingerprint of a complete sample regarding polymer distribution chains. Nevertheless, polymer chemical properties such as polydispersity (Pd), average molecular mass (Mn), weight average molecular mass (Mw) and others are not determined by MS, as they are commonly characterized by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). In order to calculate polymer properties from MS, a Python script was developed to interpret polymer properties from spectroscopic raw data.

Materials exhibiting thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) based on transition metal complexes are currently gathering significant attention due to their technological potential. Their application extends beyond optoelectronics, in particular organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) and light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs), and include also photocatalysis, sensing, and X-ray scintillators. From the perspective of sustainability, earth-abundant metal centers are preferred to rarer second- and third-transition series elements, thus determining a reduction in costs and toxicity but without compromising the overall performances.

A detailed analysis of the wave functions for the M to 5f excitations in the linear actinyls, UO, NpO, and PuO, and the theoretical X-ray absorption spectra obtained with these wave functions in comparison with experimental M-edge high-resolution X-ray absorption near-edge structure (HR-XANES) spectra is presented. The wave functions include full treatment of scalar and spin-orbit relativistic effects through the use of a Dirac-Coulomb Hamiltonian; many-body effects are included in determining the wave functions. The character of the excited states and of the active spaces to describe the wave functions for these states are investigated and analyzed.

A trajectory surface hopping approach, which uses machine learning to speed up the most time-consuming steps, has been adopted to investigate the exciton transfer in light-harvesting systems. The present neural networks achieve high accuracy in predicting both Coulomb couplings and excitation energies. The latter are predicted taking into account the environment of the pigments.

Online tuning of particle accelerators is a complex optimisation problem that continues to require manual intervention by experienced human operators. Autonomous tuning is a rapidly expanding field of research, where learning-based methods like Bayesian optimisation (BO) hold great promise in improving plant performance and reducing tuning times. At the same time, reinforcement learning (RL) is a capable method of learning intelligent controllers, and recent work shows that RL can also be used to train domain-specialised optimisers in so-called reinforcement learning-trained optimisation (RLO).

Some 20 years ago, the EU introduced complex regulatory rules for the growth of transgenic crops, which resulted in a de facto ban to grow these plants in fields within most European countries. Unfortunately, in 2018, the European Court of Justice ruled that such gene-edited plants are to be regulated like transgenic plants.

Hydrophobic peptide models derived from the α-helical transmembrane segment of the epidermal growth factor receptor were synthetically modified with a flavin amino acid as a photo-inducible charge donor and decorated with tryptophans along the helix as charge acceptors. The helical conformation of the peptides was conserved despite the modifications, notably also in lipid vesicles and multibilayers. Their ability to facilitate photo-induced transmembrane charge transport was examined by means of steady-state and time-resolved optical spectroscopy.
