The single-step syngas-to-dimethyl ether (STD) process offers both economic and technical advantages over the current two-step industrial process that utilizes Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 catalysts. Here, we report a highly active bifunctional Pd/CeO2/γ-Al2O3 catalyst, in which Pd colloids dispersed in a nanoscale CeO2 matrix serve as the key building block for the methanol-active component, efficiently catalysing the STD reaction. For Pd/CeO2/γ-Al2O3 with a high Pd-CeO2 interface concentration, CO conversion and dimethyl ether yield are significantly increased compared to Pd supported on Al2O3.

The on-surface synthesis of an isomer of undecacene, bearing two four-membered rings and two para-quinodimethane moieties, starting from a tetramethyl-substituted diepoxy precursor, is presented. The transformation implies a thermal double deoxygenation followed by a stepwise double dehydrogenation reaction on the Au(111) surface, locally induced by inelastic tunneling electrons. This results in the transformation of para-dimethylbenzene moieties into non-aromatic para-quinodimethanes.

The direct anodic conversion of alkali carbonates in aqueous media provides access to peroxodicarbonate, which is a safe to use and green oxidizer. Although first reports date back around 150 years, its low concentrations and limited thermal stability have consigned this reagent to oblivion. It is well established that spin-transfer torques exerted by in-plane spin currents give rise to a motion of magnetic skyrmions resulting in a skyrmion Hall effect. In films of finite thickness or in three-dimensional bulk samples the skyrmions extend in the third direction forming a string. We demonstrate that a spin current flowing longitudinally along the skyrmion string instead induces a Goldstone spin wave instability.

(R)/(S)-the two enantiomers of 3-substituted-1-[2-(5)-3-substituted-4-benzyl-5-oxo-4-phenyl-2-thioxoimid-azolidin-1-yl]ethyl/propyl-5-benzyl-5-phenyl-2-thioxoimidazolidin-4-ones were formed during the diastereoselective reaction between N,N″-1,ω-alkanediylbis[N'-organylthiourea] derivatives and 2,3-diphenylcyclopropenone in refluxing ethanol. The structures of the isolated compounds were confirmed by NMR, IR, mass spectra and elemental analyses. Moreover, single-crystal X-ray structure analysis was also used to elucidate the structure of the isolated compounds.

Mayaro virus (MAYV) is an emerging arthropod-borne virus endemic in Latin America and the causative agent of arthritogenic febrile disease. Mayaro fever is poorly understood; thus, we established an in vivo model of infection in susceptible type-I interferon receptor-deficient mice (IFNAR-/-) to characterize the disease. MAYV inoculations in the hind paws of IFNAR-/- mice result in visible paw inflammation, evolve into a disseminated infection and involve the activation of immune responses and inflammation.

New 1,4-naphthoquinone derived by triphenylphosphaneylidene (PhP) and -substituted-hydrazine-1-carbothioamides were obtained during a one-pot reaction of 2,3-dichloro-1,4-naphthoquinone with thiosemicarbazides, PhP and in the presence of triethyl amine (EtN) as a catalyst. The structure of the ligands was established by ESI, IR, and NMR spectra, in addition to elemental analyses and X-ray structure analysis. On subjecting the newly prepared ligands with CuCl and PhP, autoxidation occurs, and ()-(2-(1,4-dioxo-3-(triphenyl phosphanylidene)-3,4-dihydronaphthalen-2(1)-ylidene)carbamothioyl)hydrazinyl)-((triphenylphosphanyl)oxy)copper derivatives were formed in very good yields.

In this paper, a highly effective and scalable polyol-based modified procedure is reported, yielding shape-controlled Pd nanoparticles (NPs) formed two distinct growth mechanisms as a function of apparent pH. Starting from tetraethylammonium tetrahydroxypalladate (TEA)[Pd(OH)], a halide-free precursor, the resulting shape of the NPs ranged from highly defective worm-like nanostructures to well-defined polyhedra (tetrahedra, octahedra and 5-fold twins) as shown by TEM, HRTEM, and STEM. The effect of the different synthesis parameters was thoroughly investigated, finding that apparent pH - modulated by adding diluted HNO - is the key parameter in determining the final size and shape of Pd NPs, whose evolution was followed during the reaction.
