Article Synopsis
  • This study examines the link between air pollution and the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) who are treated with nucleotide/nucleoside analogues.
  • The research involved 1,298 patients over a follow-up period, finding that liver cirrhosis, male sex, age, and body mass index were key risk factors for HCC.
  • It concludes that long-term exposure to nitrogen oxides (NO) significantly increases the risk of HCC, especially in CHB patients with cirrhosis.

In silico toxicogenomics methods are resource- and time-efficient approaches for inferring chemical-protein-disease associations with potential mechanism information for exploring toxicological effects. However, current in silico toxicogenomics systems make inferences based on only chemical-protein interactions without considering tissue-specific gene/protein expressions. As a result, inferred diseases could be overpredicted with false positives.

Compared with computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) traditionally plays a very limited role in lung cancer management, although there is plenty of room for improvement in the current CT-based workflow, for example, in structures such as the brachial plexus and chest wall invasion, which are difficult to visualize with CT alone. Furthermore, in the treatment of high-risk tumors such as ultracentral lung cancer, treatment-associated toxicity currently still outweighs its benefits. The advent of MR-Linac, an MRI-guided radiotherapy (RT) that combines MRI with a linear accelerator, could potentially address these limitations.

Article Synopsis
  • Night shift workers experience circadian rhythm disruptions and related metabolic disorders, which can be influenced by gut microbiota.
  • An experiment with male mice showed that high-intensity blue LED lighting led to reduced gut microbiota diversity and changed the beneficial-to-harmful bacteria ratio, particularly affecting cholesterol metabolism.
  • Lower intensity blue and white LEDs increased total cholesterol but had less impact on microbiota diversity, suggesting night shift workers should limit exposure to high-intensity blue light to maintain gut health and metabolism.

Background: Air pollution is a risk factor for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, the effect of air pollution on HCC risk in patients with hepatitis remains unclear.

Methods: This cross-sectional study recruited 348 patients with chronic hepatitis who were tested for serum hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and for antibodies against hepatitis B core antigen (HBcIgG) and hepatitis C virus (anti-HCV) in 2022.

Heat stress significantly undermines the poultry industry by escalating rates of morbidity and mortality and impairing growth performance. Our recent findings indicate that Prinsepiae Nux extract (PNE) effectively stimulates the signaling pathway, a vital element in cellular antioxidant stress responses. This study further explores the prospective benefits of supplementing PNE into poultry feed to enhance broiler growth in heat-stressed conditions.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explored the link between air pollution and advanced liver fibrosis in patients with metabolic associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) and chronic hepatitis infections (HBV and HCV).
  • Out of 1,376 participants, a significant percentage had MAFLD (52.8%) and a smaller portion exhibited advanced fibrosis (13.6%), with factors like HCV viremia, smoking, age, and particulate matter (PM) levels being associated with advanced fibrosis.
  • There was a clear dose-dependent relationship between PM levels and the severity of liver fibrosis, indicating that higher PM exposure correlates with more severe fibrosis stages.

Biochemical response is an important prognostic indicator in chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients receiving nucleotide/nucleoside analogues (NAs). However, the effects of air pollution in alanine aminotransferase (ALT) normalization remain elusive. This longitudinal study recruited 80 hepatitis B e antigen-negative CHB patients who received NAs.

Article Synopsis
  • - Elevated serum gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) levels are linked to higher mortality rates in chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients receiving nucleotide/nucleoside analog treatments, showing significant increases in GGT measurements before and six months after treatment.
  • - A study analyzing 2,843 CHB patients found that factors such as cirrhosis, age, and pretreatment GGT levels are strong predictors of both all-cause and liver-related mortality, with cirrhosis having the highest hazard ratio.
  • - The link between pretreatment GGT levels and mortality remains consistent regardless of alcohol use history, and there is a noticeable dose-dependent association with different percentiles of GGT indicating increased mortality risk

Institute of Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Research, National Health Research Institutes, Miaoli County, 35053, Taiwan; Graduate Institute of Data Science, College of Management, Taipei Medical University, Taipei, 10675, Taiwan. Electronic address:

Food contact chemicals (FCCs) can migrate from packaging materials to food posing an issue of exposure to FCCs of toxicity concern. Compared to costly experiments, computational methods can be utilized to assess the migration potentials for various migration scenarios for further experimental investigation that can potentially accelerate the migration assessment. This study developed a nonlinear machine learning method utilizing chemical properties, material type, food type and temperature to predict chemical migration from package to food.

Electronic address:

Background: Patients with locally advanced esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) following neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (nCRT) may not always receive resection despite the possible achievement of a pathologic complete response (pCR) being associated with superior survival benefit. We aimed to compare outcomes among ESCC patients with or without pCR and those refusing surgery.

Methods: In total, 111 medically operable, non-cervical ESCC patients after the same protocol of nCRT (platinum/5-fluorouracil plus radiation 50Gy) were prospectively enrolled between 2011 and 2021.

Introduction: A potential association between epilepsy and subsequent type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) has emerged in recent studies. However, the association between epilepsy, anti-epileptic drugs (AEDs), and the risk of T2DM development remains controversial. We aimed to conduct a nationwide, population-based, retrospective, cohort study to evaluate this relationship.

Graduate Institute of Natural Products, College of Pharmacy, Kaohsiung Medical University, Kaohsiung 80708, Taiwan.

Ultraviolet B (UVB) is one of the most important environmental factors that cause extrinsic aging through increasing intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in the skin. Due to its protective roles against oxidative stress, nuclear factor erythroid-2-related factor (NRF2) has been traditionally considered as a target for skin aging prevention. Here, we identified the extract of Prinsepiae Nux, a top-grade drug listed in Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing, as a potent NRF2 activator by high-throughput screening.

Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) present a higher risk of developing cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) due to chronic inflammation, which plays an essential role in atherogenesis. Hyperlipidemia is another risk factor for CVDs; however, the association between IBD, IBD medications, and hyperlipidemia remains controversial. We conducted a nationwide, population-based, retrospective, cohort study to examine the effect of IBD and IBD medications on the risk of developing hyperlipidemia.

Minimally invasive spine surgery reduces destruction of the paraspinal musculature and improves spinal stability. Nevertheless, screw loosening remains a challenging issue in osteoporosis patients receiving spinal fixation and fusion surgery. Moreover, adjacent vertebral compression fracture is a major complication, particularly in patients with osteoporosis.

Purpose: Severe complications, including screw loosening events and low fusion rates, in spinal fusion surgery using the traditional open method are problematic. This retrospective study aimed to evaluate the rate of screw loosening and the clinical outcomes of bone-mounted miniature robot-assisted pedicle screw placement in patients treated for degenerative spinal disease.

Patients And Methods: Data were collected from the medical records of 118 patients (mean age, 69 years).
