The purpose of this study was to validate three different techniques for obtaining motor unit number estimates of the rat medial gastrocnemius muscle. These consisted of two electromyographic techniques using unprocessed and digitally averaged unitary muscle action potentials, and one mechanical technique. We also injected subunit B of cholera toxin into this muscle and counted the number of spinal motor neurons labeled by the toxin.

November 1996

Pain Clinic, Kanto Teishin Hospital,Tokyo,Japan Department of Anesthesiology, Jikei University School of Medicine,Jikei,Japan Department of Anesthesiology, Hannan Central Hospital, 3-3-28 Minamishinmachi, Matubara,Osaka 580,Japan.

The purpose of this study was to determine the distribution of referred pain from the cervical zygapophyseal joints (C0/1 to C7/Th1) and the cervical dorsal rami (C3 to C7). The subjects were 61 patients who had occipital, neck, and shoulder pain of suspected zygapophyseal origin in whom pain was reproduced by injection of contrast medium into the joints or by electrical stimulation of the dorsal rami. Under fluoroscopic control, the zygapophyseal joints from C0/1 to C7/Th1 were stimulated by the injection of contrast medium and while electrical stimulation of the cervical zygapophyseal dorsal rami at segments C3 to C7 was performed during facet denervation.

Acyclic retinoid (all-trans-3, 7, 11, 15-tetramethyl-2, 4, 6, 10, 14-hexadecapentaenoic acid) binds cellular retinoic acid-binding protein with an affinity similar to that of all-trans retinoic acid and induces differentiation of human hepatoma cell lines and a human acute myelogenous leukemia cell line (HL-60). We investigated the in vitro efficacy of acyclic retinoid to induce the differentiation of acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) cells using primary cultured cells obtained from 11 APL patients. Five days' incubation with acyclic retinoid effected a dose-dependent induction of differentiation.

Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) enhances the differentiation of acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) cells induced by all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) in vitro. Accordingly, we initiated a pilot study on G-CSF in APL patients who developed neutropenia and severe infection during remission induction therapy with ATRA. Seven out of nine treated patients displayed a marked increase in granulocyte counts without leukemic regrowth, and two displayed a dramatic decrease in leukemic blasts.

We investigated 100 consecutive patients with trigeminal neuralgia (TN) and 53 patients with hemifacial spasm (HFS) concerning the anatomical relationship between the root entry (exit) zone (REZ) of cranial nerve and the offending artery, using spoiled GRASS MRI (SPGR-MRI) and three dimensional-time of fly-MRA (MRA). In 67 of 100 (67%) patiets with TN, this new radiological method, SPGR-MRI and MRA demonstrated the relationship between the fifth cranial nerve root and offending artery causing neurovascular compression (NVC), and in 46 of 53 (87%) with HFS, demonstrated the similar relationship between seventh and eighth nerve complex and offending artery. Microvascular decompression (MVD) was performed in 10 with HFS, and NVC of the REZ of the facial nerve caused by the offending artery was exactly predicted by SPGR-MRI and MRA in 9 (90%).

Pericentric inversion of chromosome 16 [inv(16)(p13q22)] is seen in patients with acute myelomonocytic leukemia with bone marrow eosinophilia. This inversion juxtaposes the MYH11 gene on p13 and the CBFB gene on q22, resulting in the formation of a chimeric mRNA transcript. We describe a patient with acute myelogenous leukemia (M1), with del(16)(q22), who expressed the chimeric transcript.

Connective tissue growth factor (CTGF) is a novel peptide that exhibits platelet-derived growth factor-like activities and is produced by skin fibroblasts after activation with transforming growth factor-beta. Coordinate expression of transforming growth factor-beta followed by CTGF during wound repair suggests a cascade process for control of tissue regeneration. We recently reported a significant correlation between CTGF mRNA expression and histologic sclerosis in systemic sclerosis.
